Save the Division of Textiles and Clothing!

Save the Division of Textiles and Clothing!

Target:
Dean Van Alfen, Vice Provost Patricia Turner, Provost Enrique Lavernia
Due to budget cuts in California education the Division of Textiles and Clothing at UC Davis has a high risk of closing down. This division is unique to the whole UC System and is a great division that intertwines physical and social sciences! On behalf of the Division of Textiles and Clothing, I am asking you to disagree with its suggested closure and promote its existence and growth by signing this petition. (While the classes will continue to be taught the future of the program requires funding to replace the faculty when they retire).

Working for an apparel company, the need for this type of education is great. Let's support our national brands by educating our future employees.

The Textiles and Clothing major/department at Davis is one of the two in existence in the UC system. Both have a high risk of closure which ends all opportunity for those interested in this major and a quality UC education. Keep Textiles and Clothing available to these students who want to be apart of the UC community.

I highly disagree with the closure of this department. TXC is the only major like it's kind in all of California. I work for a major retailor and have interacted with many graduates from "fashion schools" and am proud of my education from UCD's TXC program. I know that I have a better and more well rounded eduation than the fashion school students. I strongly believe that if more people were away of what the major had to offer that enrollment would dramatically increase. I was able to accept a job offer prior to my graduation and was able to accept a new position even in a down economy. PLEASE SAVE TXC!!!

My kid applied to UC Davis because of the textile and clothing major. It is a unique major which distinguishes UC Davis from other UC campuses.

It is a very unique course curriculum that teaches various aspects of sustainability and textiles that many public and private schools do not offer. All the staff members and students are so dedicated to this major.

I graduated with a degree in Design for UCDavis. I now want to return to earn my MS in Textiles with a thesis topic of sustainability in the textiles and fashion industry. There are very few programs in the country for this. I also applied for a grant from the EPA worth $75,000.00. I will be devastated if this program nolonger exists for Fall 2010. Please do everything possible to continue the program. The Textile and Fashion industry needs trained professionals with undergraduate and graduate degrees to continue in this country.

UC Davis is the only UC to offer a course in Textiles and Clothing. I think it provides its students with in-depth knowledge of the materials used in clothing for textile production, distribution, marketing and sale of clothing. This division produces people equipped with scientific as well as business background in textiles and clothing.

We should give young people the chance to pursue their passions and dreams if they have interest and talent in the area of textiles and clothing.

I was really looking forward to applying to this program next year, as it is the only one in the UC System. It is my dream to attend this school, specifically majoring in Textiles and Clothing. It is such a unique major unlike any other universities, and it would be extremely disappointing to see it close down. Please keep the Division of Textiles and Clothing!

As a former student and now a staff member of UC Davis, I am very proud of the contributions made by the university in non-traditional academic fields such as pomology, viticulture & enology, and animal science. The Textiles and Clothing department is another one of these unique, non-traditional fields that quietly makes significant contributions to our society, both locally and globally. I strongly urge the powers that be in UC Davis Administration to keep the department active as well as hire new TXC faculty.

Textiles and clothing is a rare major and a treasure. I hate to see it go away.

The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance. As a unique offering, the Division of Textiles and Clothing should be funded to insure continued insight and research in this valuable area. Globalization provides challenges and opportunities in this area. We need educated individuals to lead in the future.

As a forest firefighter, we depend on the latest innovations in textiles to provide the greatest protection for us on fires. UCD is the closest major university to the fire prone areas in Northern California. I cannot imagine why UCD would get rid of one the few majors for which it is famous. •• In addition, California is a global trendsetter in both economic and social movements. If we fail to educate the future leaders of the clothing industry here in California, do you really think anyone else will step up to tackle the global issues, such as fair trade and sweatshops? As California goes, so goes the world.
