Ban Jet Skis In Exuma Park

Background: The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, the first of its kind in the world, is famous for its pristine beauty, outstanding anchorages and breathtaking marine environment. Under its transparent turquoise waters are beautiful natural gardens of coral teeming with fish and lobster.

In 1985, the Bahamas National Trust took a bold conservation stance: the Exuma Park was made a protected replenishment zone. All fishing is prohibited within the boundaries of the Park.

Unique Bahamian wildlife wander unmolested within the park. The Hutia (who-tia) Geocapromys ingrahami, the only terrestrial mammal native to The Bahamas, is found in the Park. Iguanas forage in the bushes for food, sea turtles lay their eggs on undisturbed beaches, and sea birds nests without interference on cays within the park.

Mission: But now, due to Exuma Park's growing popularity, marine life, wildlife and visitors alike are being disturbed and sometimes harassed by jet skis. Please help us by signing this petition so we can ban all motorized personal watercraft within the borders of Exuma Park.
We the undersigned ask that you ban Jet Skis and other motorized personal watercraft  in Exuma Park.

For years Exuma Park has been an example for many nations as the proper way to protect marine resources. As a 'no take zone' Exuma Park has become flush with life both above and below the surface. Conch, grouper, and lobster populations have grown nearly back historical levels. The sea turtle population has boomed due their protection in the Bahamas. These are great achievements.

However the tranquil, pristine waters of Exuma Park are often recklessly churned up as jet skis speed over coral heads and breathing sea turtles. Jet Skis are a tremendous disturbance to marine life and wildlife and there is no place for them in the oldest marine protected area in the world. A ban on jet skis will be welcomed by the vast majority of your visitors and create the atmosphere that has become expected of Exuma Park.

As the jewel of the Bahamas we ask that you put into motion a ban on all motorized personal water craft to bring the peace back to Exuma Park.
