No to gas and hydrocarbon prospecting Malaga Coast Spain

On the 23 December 2010 in Cabinet, The Secretariat of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment in Spain, gave approval for Repsol to prospect for natural gas and hydrocarbons in Malaga. This was approved and licenses were authorised to five companies to partake of a hydrocarbon investigation in the territory and on the Spanish coast. Among the companies who are authorised are CNWL Oil Spain, of the Canadian international Sherrit Corporation, and Shuepbach Energy/Vancast Exploration.
These licenses authorise the mentioned companies to look for petroleum or gas in six areas of the Andalusian coast, denominated "Chinook - A, B, C and D" and "Tesorillo and Ruedalabola". These new licenses to explore the hydrocarbon potential on the Andalusian coast between Cadiz and Almeria are to look for active gas wells. Also other projects of investigation in search of hydrocarbons.
On the 22 June 2011, Ripsa/Natural Gas Operation obtained the environmental permission on the part of the Ministry of Environment for the accomplishment of an exploratory sounding, Siroco-A, that will be carried out in the external continental platform of the sea of Alborán, approximately nine kilometers south of the municipality of Mijas and twelve kilometres to the southwest of Fuengirola (Malaga).

With the permission of the Ministry of Industry, the prospections will take place in April 2012.
These operations could cause grave economic damages to the fishermen, to tourism, and to the livelihood of all on the coast, and also at an environmental level on the Costa del Sol. Another Gulf of Mexico situation could be in the making.
In view of the lack of political transparency with respect to the subject, the citizenship must act to try to stop a barbarism that in a direct way, or indirectly affects us ALL; for this reason, we ask the Minister of Industry, to stop this process, that takes care of only the economic benefits of the Repsol multinational and demonstrates little to the voice that the citizenship has with respect to vitally important subjects, like this one.

"Dear Minister
We ask that you do not grant to the Repsol company permission to realise soundings in search of hydrocarbons and natural gas on the Coast of Fuengirola and Mijas (Malaga). Although the Secretariat of Climatic, dependent change of the Ministry of Environment, has given a favorable report, we know that the last word depends on your Ministry and, for this reason, it would have to hear the citizen voice that is against fully the possibility of looking for a type of energy, that besides not being alternative nor renewable, can cause, according to ecological studies, a serious environmental impact in a place whose main industries are tourism and fishing. Please, do not make this project viable, that causes harm directly or indirectly to ALL, since, besides the risks of spills, fires and contamination, it also takes one step back in the projection of a sustainable future. Estimado Ministro, me dirijo a usted para solicitarle que NO otorgue a la compañía Repsol, el permiso para realizar sondeos en busca de hidrocarburos y gas natural en aguas de Fuengirola y Mijas (Málaga). Aunque la Secretaría de Cambio Climático, dependiente del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, ha dado un informe favorable, sabemos que la última palabra depende de su Ministerio y, por ello, debería de oir la voz ciudadana que se opone rotúndamente a la posibilidad de buscar un tipo de energía, que además de no ser alternativa ni renovable, puede ocasionar, según estudios ecologístas, que carecen de intereses económico respecto al tema, un grave impacto ambiental en un lugar cuyas industrias principales son el turismo y la pesca. Por favor, no haga viable éste proyecto, que nos perjudica directa o indirectamente a TODOS, ya que, además de los riesgos de vertidos, incendios y contaminación,
supone un paso atrás en la proyección de un futuro sostenible.
