Save the Rink ! PArents and Children of Southern PA and Northern MD are outraged by the Southern Branch YMCA's decisio to close the Roller Rink that has been a youth staple for 2 decades.

Save the Shrewsbury Roller Rink

Target:
Souther Branch YMCA, Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania
Sponsored by:
The Southern Branch YMCA has made a decision to do away with their one of a kind roller rink that has served adults and children from Northern Maryland and Souther Pennsylvania for two decades.  Their claim is that due to decreasing use of the rink, they can serve more of the community by enhancing this space.  Their plan is to convert the rink into a wellness center and a youth all-propose room.  Although YMCA management will tell you that much thought and vision was put into this decision, it is very apparent that have not considered all the users of the rink.

It goes far beyond the Roller Hockey program that serves roughly one hundred 5 to 16 year olds for 5 months a year.  Below is a list of users that come to mind:

Roller Hockey
Public Skating
Summer Camp
Home School Skate
Youth Basketball
Adult morning walk
Monday Night Adult Hockey
Friday Night Teen Skate
Birthday Swim n Skate Parties
Daycare and After School Care
and more ...

The big concern is that the YMCA is forgetting about the kids it has advertised to be supporting for so long.  "Strong Kids" has been one of their catch phrases forever.  Parents have raised concerns, for example, that these kids who are safely accounted for at the rink on Friday nights will now be out and about.

The Hockey program has always shaped our youth in a positive way.  The following is a quote from one of our concerned Parents "The kids don't just play one season and never see each other again. In the Hockey program the kids form long standing friendhips. I also witnessed how roller hockey involved the teenagers in leadership roles. It gave them an opportunity to lead and act as mentors for the young children as well. The younger ones look up to the teenagers, and hockey provided a terrific environment to see them carry out Godly character in those roles. What a good opportunity to pass down meaningful attributes to the younger generation. The roller hockey program wasn't just a sports program with reluctant parents, coaches, and volunteers. From my point of view, it was a shining example of what the YMCA used to promote - helping to develop young christians within the community. The hockey program wasn't about "ME". It was about "TEAM" and "COMMUNITY". It fostered traditional values that children so much need today."

Of course there's many more testimonials from concerned parents, but the bottom line is everybody is saddened that the rink that has helped shape hundreds of young men and women over the years won't be there for this community in years to come.

Please if you have any interest in turning around this decision by the YMCA, sign our petition and be heard !

York and Southern Branch YMCA Board of Directors,

We the undersigned are outraged at your decision to do away with the Roller Rink that has been a staple in our community for the past 2 decades. Not only has it taught our children teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship over the years through the hockey program, but it has also given all children a safe, fun place to congregate and make lifetime friendships while keeping them off the streets through its many other programs and events.

We are very disappointed to hear that the YMCA appears to be favoring adult programs over our youth by converting the roller rink used by hundreds of kids into yet another a fitness center that kids can%u2019t use. We believe that this is a serious mistake and beg you and your board to reconsider. Just take a step back and read your own motto "We build strong kids". That%u2019s what the programs at the rink have always done. If properly managed, this one of a kind YMCA rink would be an asset not a liability. It is what makes this YMCA unique and allows it to offer children more. Remember the kids.

Although it was said that the rink closing decision meetings were well advertised amongst the members, nothing could be further from the truth. We feel that you owe it to the hundreds of users of the rink to delay your proposed construction for a year so the very people you claim to have involved can get a real opportunity to make a difference. People can do amazing things to save something they care so deeply about and we believe we deserve the chance to save our rink.

You have taken the human element out of this decision. The YMCA claims to be the nation%u2019s largest not-for-profit community service organization. But you are acting more like a cut throat business. It is appalling that the only input from the members and the community that was used to make this decision was a very small survey that had an unfair sampling of people.

The comments below are the voices of the community the YMCA serves. They are the voices you should have listened to before making the decision to close the rink. When you read the heartfelt comments in this petition, you will surely come to understand just how much this rink means to the people of this area as well as the repercussions that will come from closing it.

We ask that you all read these comments and then reconvene your board and revisit this decision. You owe it to the families%u2019 of this community that has supported you for so long.

Sincerely,

Friends of the Shrewsbury Roller Rink

My son thoroughly enjoys use of the rink on family nights and every Friday night. The rink is one of the main reasons we belong to the Y.

I just moved to the area and was thrilled to hear about the rink only to find out about the proposed changes. How unfortunate to lose that type of rink.

I thought the YMCA was for younger kids. The adults can drive to where ever they want to for fitness. They should save the rink for the children.

I do not agree with renovating the roller skating rink to make a teen/wellness center. What a dis-service to the children in the local area. This rink is the only one of its kind for use by the kids in Northern Baltimore County and SYC zone. Where else can you go that is local and safe, get involved in a physical activity and listen to loud music pumping thru a sound system at the same time? Our son is in the 6th grade this year and will not be able to experience the 'end of the year, 6th grade move up party', which has always been a rite of passage. Please take a minute to remember when the Baltimore Zoo could no longer 'AFFORD' to keep the elephant exhibit open...where there is a will there is a way. SAVE THE RINK!

Our Grand children live for this place and love to skate. Maybe those that donated to this YMCA, especially those who donated large sums should be contacted to see their opinion, i.e. Robert Hitte.

It is sad to see the decision for how best to use the space from the rink to go in favor of adding more gym and weight equipment for the adults. My son has played in the roller hockey league for 2 years now and I would say that I am amazed at how well the league is coordinated and coached. The league emphasizes and practices the common traits the Y was founded. The level of play is outstanding and it is amazing how quickly new children pick up the skills from the coaching. I can only say the Y decision makers would be quite excited with what they see in the roller hockey program if they were to visit on a Saturday morning/afternoon. In addition, my family participates in the Home-school skate program which the program has provided an avenue for the children to take a break from schooling, socialize, exercise, and even learn to skate. I can say both programs above have been a blessing to the young folks in this family. I want to add that as members of the Y, we felt the pool space useage was only maximized when the Y held swimming events as any other time you would not see the pool being used other than by adult lappers. The perception I have of the Y increasing the membership 10% annually is that the money is being spent to provide upgrades/additions to gym and weightlifting equipment. It seems clear to me what is important to the Y leadership and the direction the Y is going. I am not going to support this.

I do not see or agree w/the future vision of the YMCA. I do not believe it would be beneficial to remodel the rink. Occationally, I do go to the skate night on Fridays with 2 of my children, ages 5 & 10. I have gone into the rink, also w/both children to watch the Country line dancers on Wed. nights. That was fun! The Y has the ONLY roller skating rink in the lower half of SYC & they can't make any money? What about seniors rink walking in the am? What about your roller hockey program? What about swimming & skating parties? What about Camp Sun & Fun? Next year, you won't have any room for the Sr. campers & will need to pay another site to use their facility for your program. How cost effective is that? My bet is that you will loose money. I paid $1,000.00 for my 5 year old to go to camp there this summer and her favorite thing to do is -SKATE!! What a shame. If I want to sit my kids in front of a computer or video games, they can sit at home. How often can you climb the same rock wall before it gets 'old'? You want a place where the youth can come & hang? Let me tell ya', I've seen some of the youth @ Friday night skate and when they are not skating, they are hanging all right!! All over each other. One young man had his hand up his girlfriends skirt!! You can't even get someone to plant grass seed or mow the weeds on the soil islands in the newly paved parking lot!! Are you telling me that the Y is going to provide IT support for their new computer lab? I could not tell you how many 'hand written receipts' I have had to accept for Kids club pmts. due to computers that are 'down'. With several other fitness gyms in the area, do you really need to enlarge the weight room area to compete for members? Many gyms now a days are not even charging a 'monthly maintenance fee' in order to have a membership. I am irritated that my 'MMF' is $60 something dollars each month, keeps increasing in price & the benefits & services keep getting cut; no comp. massages, no roller skating...what next?!? Good luck w/your new plans. I think it is a terrible idea!! Who would like to help me break the 'good news' about the rink demo. to my daughter?!?

Over the years, I have seen this area used for many purposes and to support many ages. I think it has been a benefit to parents who need summer assistance but it's also been nice to see the hockey groups (youth and adult) as well as line dancers participation grow. I would hate to lose this valuable service to all.

Where can the Kids go to simply learn to skate and enjoy. I thought the "Y" in YMCA stood for "Young" and the promotion of things for young people to enjoy. The proposal to turn it into two Fitnes areas sounds more like a money making proposition from the legal Dept.

I cannot believe that sincere consideration is being given to this idea. There is next to nothing in this area for children of any age to do, especially physical, and now you%u2019re going to take away one of the only options they do have for. Absurd! Tell me, where else can they go and get exercise that that doesn%u2019t require 2 thumbs, a joy stick or a keyboard!

I would not like to see the skating rink go away. I have many memories of going there as a child and my children have gone to this skating rink. I think we have taken too many things from our kids and now one of the only places for our children to come and have a good time and hang out with friends in a very sad and unfortunate things. Do we ever stop and wonder why our children are getting into so much trouble these days? I feel that one big reason is because they don't have places to go like (the skating rink).

Kids need a place to go to be kids and when they are at places like this, parents do not have to worry about them as much. They are off of the streets and not bored. Kids who are bored tend to get into more trouble than not.

The rink is a great place to exercise and my nephew started playing hockey there several years ago and loves it. I don't use the Y that much but continue with my membership only to support my nephew. If the rink goes, I will cancel my family membership.

Dear Directors of the Southern York Co. YMCA Branch: I have been a member of the YMCA in Shrewsbury since 2000 (excluding 9 months during 2006 that my family was living in Maryland temporarily). During that time I have directed some of my United Way donations to go to the YMCA of Southern York. But as a member of the YMCA, I am concern with the direction that our branch is taking with respect to the skating rink. While I have never used the rink and my children have only used it a few times, I still believe this skating rink is very important for kids in our community. In the past people have asked me why do belong to the YMCA vs. other fitness centers that are cleaner, cheaper, etc. My answer has always been %u201CBelonging to the Y is more than just a place to workout, it%u2019s a place for kids to learn how to swim and skate and it%u2019s a place for older people to stay fit and healthy. So if a few dollars a month of my membership or my couple hundred dollars a year donation goes to help the kids that%u2019s all good.%u201D I pray that the leadership of the YMCA can workout at plan to provide a great place for the kids to skate, the adults to workout and elderly to stay fit and healthy. If you can pull that off I will pledge to direct $500 a year plus a McCormick company match of $500 to the YMCA of Southern York County.
