My friend and I vacationed in SF this past Spring and had a blast at the Tonga Room! It was one of the best parts of our trip. We had so much fun the first time, we went back. We drank, laughed, sang....had so much fun! Please don't close the Tonga Room. It is a great landmark!

I have been a patron of the Tonga Room for more than 25 years and was pleased each time with the dining and the general atmosphere. It is a trademark of San Francisco and should not go the way so many other landmarks have followed.

My family will never stay at a Fairmont again if the Tonga Room is closed. This is one of the only nice Polynesian-themed restaurants in the country. What a terrible mistake it'd be for The Fairmont to close it. When I lived in San Francisco, three blocks from the hotel, my parents and I ate their all the time. When I'm in San Francisco on business or pleasure, I always go back. It draws both locals and tourists.

To close down, what should be an historic landmark, all in the name of progress, is foolish and short-sighted. The Tonga Room has been an essential cultural part of SF for many years, and without it, another nail in the coffin, for this great city. Please keep the Tonga Room open. Thank you.

My boyfriend and I are both San Francisco natives. We have both been avid Tiki fans and collectors since we were teenagers. The Tonga Room is where we plan to have our wedding reception and we wanna make sure it's still here when we tie the knot!

My wife and I visited the tonga room on our tenth anniversary (1985) and had a fabulous time. We still talk about it's fantastic ambiance. Please keep it open for everyone to enjoy.

I have had dinner at the Tonga Room multiple times in the last few years - every time I come to SF in fact. It would be a shame if this piece of history were destroyed. Please keep the Tonga Room open... I want more good reasons to visit CA.

OMG you can't even be thinking about closing this place. It is unique and wonderful. Where else in California can you go for a good thunderstorm!!! Everybody loves the Tonga Room. Are you out of your mind??? San Francisco would be much the poorer for its loss. We would all be sad.

When visiting SF this last time we were told to go to the Tonga Room. We half considered, but everyone we met in SF got excited for the Tonga Room when we said we might go. It was one of our best nights in town. No other tiki bar can ever compete with this place. Trader Vic's in Chicago is just a poor attempt.

I am a San Francisco resident and property owner. I went to the Tonga Room for the first time this past week on June 4 (2009) and had a wonderful evening with friends. Our waitress told us that she had worked there for 28 years! This, more than anything, is a testimony to the value of this San Francisco institution. I implore you to reconsider the decision to close this establishment so that others in the future may share this experience.

My husband and I just went to the Tonga Room last year for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Back in the 70's we both went to the Tonga Room for our Senior Proms, so the place has always been special for us. We have both gone their on and off over the years with other people and it has always been a and will always remain a special place! With all of the Hawaiian and tonga themed back yards in California and around the U.S., you would think that they would have cornered the market on this venue! When we were there for our anniversary the bar was hopping, but the restaurant was not, sad to say.....I think that the prices are a little too high in the restaurant and this may be the reason people do not eat, but just enjoy the bar with the appetizers, because it is a real bargain! I loved being able to watch the band float out on to the pool and dance, it was a real treat! My backyard is in the tonga design and style, my tribute to the Tonga Room and all of the great memories I have had there...please do not destroy this great San Francisco institution!

I was there as a young child and the memories I have are the reason I stay in the Fairmont when in S.F. If the tonga closes I will stay no longer. ---- Condos? They should look at the world market on that one.

The Tonga should be designated a National Historic Landmark, and treated as such. What would go in it's place? A Chili's or some other pasturized generic bar or worse- nothing. To anyone concerned with preserving the charm and quaintness of San Francisco, I urge you to work to preserve the Tonga.

I grew up in the Bay Area & never miss the Tonga room on any trip back. I just introduced 8 locals to it last weekend. If I moved into a condo in this building, I would do it primarily for the pleasure of having the Tonga Room in walking distance. It's always busy when I go, why on earth would anyone want to get rid of what Sunset Magazine calls "the Gold Standard for tropical themed restaurants & bars"? Please save the Tonga room.
Thanks!

Any visitor I bring to San Francisco automatically visits the Tonga room. It is required viewing to appreciate the traditions that have made this town great. The Tonga room is to the Fairmount hotel what the Garden Court is to the Palace hotel, or the Top of the Mark is to the Mark Hopkins hotel. People return to these hotels years later to reacquaint with what gave the hotel its original charm, and to introduce new generations to what was special about a building in their parent's or grandparent's day.

My father introduced me to the Tong Room for my 21st birthday in the ealy 80's. He told be stories of his shore leave from the Navy during WWII and that the Tonga Room was the place to be. He said "if you wanted to meet a pretty girl, the Tonga Room was the place to be." My Dad has since passed but my memory of his face and the joy he had telling me his stories are still very dear to my heart. Whenever I get the chance to vist San Francisco, the Tonga Room is #1 on my list. Please, don't take this treasure away, it would take a piece of my heart.

The Tonga Room is a cultural institution, and the Polynesian art is apparently unique and would be impossible to collect today. This space is just as important as any historic building! If it can't be saved in situ it should be moved. Vegas developers spend billions creating brand new, often schlocky fantasy spaces, and reap billions of tourist dollars in return. San Francisco should at least preserve what lovely, unique ones it already has! Both for ourselves and for visitors.

I have many wonderful memories of this tropical wonderland from my days at USF (Senior Ball) to celebrating my own wedding anniversary there as well as my parents. Please do not destroy this happy joyful place to relax and enjoy. We need happy places like this to keep the human spirit joyful and a taste of paradise within our grasps without having to jump on the airplane and breaking the bank. I hope our message is realized. Thank you!
