IMPORTANT UPDATE!! AS OF JANUARY 9, 2008, & DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF MANY CONCERNED CITIZENS, UNION MEMBERS, & OFFICERS, THE K-9 UNIT HAS BEEN REINSTATED!!!!!!!!! WITHOUT THE HELP OF ALL THOSE WHO SIGNED OUR PETITION, AND, AS REQUESTED, CALLED & WROTE TO CHIEF ARTS, ATTENDED CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS, & PASSED THE WORD, THIS MAY NEVER HAVE HAPPENED!!!
The Green Bay City Council recently voted to get rid of their K-9 unit, effective January 1, 2008 due to "budget cuts." Green Bay spent tens of thousands of dollars to create a canine unit and is now being disbanded. He is quoted as saying, "Unfortunately it was a difficult decision but it comes down to a business that comes down to cost, service, and our ability to manage our resources."
This is not because Green Bay cannot afford the K-9 unit, but, it seems, because of personal and/or political (anti-union?!) motives. The union has given in to all of the city's demands, but one, requesting overtime pay for training days that do not fall on their regular work days.
Either way, if a police K-9 saves one officer's life, how can we, as a community, not "afford" to have him/her in the budget!!!!! SEE SIGNATURE #885 REGARDING A UNIT IN FLORIDA WHO LOST AN OFFICER SHORTLY AFTER THE K-9 UNIT THERE WAS ENDED!! This officer would most likely not have been killed if their k-9 unit had been intact. Was this officer's life not in the budget?!
Why not continue to honor our committment as a community to these dogs who have served us for so long & so well by allowing them to continue living their lives doing what they love & what they are trained to do so well? Just ONE example of their service is this -Jack, a former Green Bay Police Dog, was stabbed by a criminal over 20 times once. Had Jack not been sent in first, it could have been an officer who was injured or killed. (Please see signature #747 to read this officer's story!!)
If people do not let their voices be heard, we will not have a canine unit next year and our officers and citizens will not be as safe as they are with K-9's such as Poket & Lobo protecting them. These dogs provide an invaluable service to our community, and to all communities worldwide.
Call & complain to Jim Arts, Green Bay Police Chief, who has much say about the future of these dogs & this valuable program. He is quoted as saying, "Unfortunately it was a difficult decision but it comes down to a business that comes down to cost, service, and our ability to manage our resources." Shall we argue as to what Chief Arts definition of "service" is?
INVITE PEOPLE TO THIS GROUP. THE MORE WHO JOIN THE MORE THAT CAN BE DONE.

Animal cruelty should be stopped. Animals should be treated with respekt. and you should never hit or abuse an animal!

I don't believe in putting animals down just because they are of no use. Please allow them to be adopted to good caring families.

All animals have are their owners, and it's up to them to have their pets in a happy, healthy, fun and loving home, anything less than that is just not acceptable or humanly right!

I believe that animal cruelty is horrible, and putting those wonderful police dogs to sleep is cruel. Why can't you just use them in a different unit? Or if that isn’t possible, try to find them a good home, even if rehabilitation is necessary for this to happen. You cannot kill these animals just because their job is no longer going to be there. Would you kill a human that got laid off?? Without these police dogs, the town won’t be as safe, and the people of the town will be in more danger from criminals. But if there is absolutely no choice in keeping the K-9 program, at least o not kill the dogs, find them a new home. If you do kill the dogs, you are just as bad as the people who abuse animals.

I agree in what you say about those dogs but arent they precious too for what they do if someone has a lethal weapon they are likely to be killed too so spare a thought for these wonderful dogs who by and far do a great job by protecting the PUBLIC at all times

Please do not punish these beautiful dogs who have served your city with honor. They deserve much more for their loyal service!

Please do not put these dogs to sleep, they have served the city without ever having a choice and have always protected your officers from injury. If you have to get rid of them, give them to another police force!

There are plenty of better options than putting these dogs down simply because you have no more personal use for them.

Those poor animals are being given a death sentence that would normally be served to someone on death row! Who have these dogs hurt? what crime have they committed? The only reason you can get away with this is because they cant stand up for themselves. These darling dogs have been trained to love, protect and trust the police officers they work with and if it ever came to it, they would do anything to save them. Whoever took this decision should be deeply ashamed and humiliated! KARMIC RETRIBUTION...wait til u get urs!

Any sane "business decsion" takes into account the inital outlay. How dare the council authorise the breeding and training of these dogs, which have cost the community financially and the dogs have undoubtedly proved thier value, just to destory them because of 'budget' concerns. Would it not be better to take responibility for creatures created for a purpose and prehaps sell them to another Police Dog Unit or as security dogs. Surely this Council in question has the creativity of mind to sense that their politcally incorrect motives could be turned to an avenue of profit? Keep the animals well, let them live thier lives, they are breed for a purpose and are not a defunct concrete building in the way of a mall.
