The Flathead River Valley in BC

Save Waterton Glacier International Peace Park

Target:
Canada, United States and United Nations
The pristine wilderness and majestic wildlife of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve are threatened by British Columbia's land use plan that encourages mining and oil and gas development on the lands adjacent to the parks.

This month the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will meet in Spain to rule on a petition that was submitted by eleven leading environmental groups in the US and Canada to add the Waterton-Glacier World Heritage Site to the list of sites "In Danger."

Currently there is a coal mine proposal within kilometers upstream of the World Heritage Site, and other mineral exploration has been ongoing even closer to the parks boundary.

Send a message to the United Nations, Canada, and the United States that mining and energy development does not belong upstream of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and demand permanent protection.

We the undersigned support the international petition to declare Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site In Danger.

Until British Columbia%u2019s land use plan is changed to protect the outstanding universal values of the adjacent World Heritage Site Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park will be at risk.

Please save Waterton-Glacier:
  1. Designate a National Park Reserve Wilderness Area in the south-eastern one-third of British Columbia%u2019s Flathead River Valley.
  2. Create a Southern Rockies Wildlife Management Area connecting habitat through the Flathead, Wigwam, Elk and Bull River valleys.
  3. Permanently stop drilling and mining in the Flathead River Valley.

Thank you for your time and consideration.  We trust that you will do the right thing.

Glacier is the most beautiful place i've been to. i'm extremely lucky to live so close to such an extraordinary place. many people have put a lot of effort into preserving and developing recreation/hiking for everyone else it would be heartbreaking to see that ruined by mining not to mention the danger to the wildlife please keep it safe from these dangers so we can enjoy Glacier for many years to come.

Public nusance lawsuits could be a very successful tool for getting America off of fossil fuel based energy.

Now there are alternative sources of energy, much more auspicious for ecology. Why not to try using them and explore their nature and new opportunities?
