Save Whitfords Horse Beach!

Joondalup mayor Troy Pickard said yesterday that the system was not about excluding people and penalties but gave priority to users of designated activities.

He said the horse exercise area was no longer appropriate in an urban setting.

Mr Pickard said owners of 21,000 registered dogs were calling for a bigger dog beach.... See more

WA Racehorse Owners Association executive officer Darren McAullay said abolishing the horse exercise area would be disappointing and WA Trainers Association president Bruce Hyde said there were still enough horses to justify keeping the horse beach open.

Australian Kiteboarding School owner Darren Marshall, who operates from Pinnaroo Point, said he was happy with the proposal.

The plan was endorsed by the council on Tuesday and will be open for public comment for six weeks

WE CANNOT LET THEM CLOSE THIS BEACH DOWN ,
we have only a small area as is. I urge everyone to please sign this petition and email to voice your opinion!

We the undersigned are petitioning the proposed closure of the Whitfords Horse Beach.

The horse community in WA is very large, consisting of recreational, competitive and professional horses and horse people.

There are only 2 beaches we are currently allowed to take horses to. Whitfords Beach is the only beach that caters for those north of the river. As it is we only have a very small portion of the beach. Please do not take that away!

Many people enjoy taking their horses down to the beach for a relaxing day out and many racehorses are trained on Whitfords beach. It provides a unique opportunity to be able to swim them and train them in an environment which has many benefits to their physical and mental wellbeing.

We urge you to reconsider closing the beach! Where else would we be able to go! There are many other dog beaches. The horses are important too!

Some valid points as to why the Whitfords Horse Beach shouldn’t be closed:

·        It is the only horse beach north of the river (and there is only one south of the river)

·        There are hundreds of kilometres of coast in Western Australia, the horse section as it stands is already only just over 100m in length

·        It is good for horses physical and mental wellbeing

·        It is an excellent place to rehabilitate injured horses or increase their fitness

·        It is used by recreational, competitive and professional horses and horse people

·        Above all it is a place for immense enjoyment and fun for those involved with horses

·        To close the beach is un-Australian. It shouldn’t be a numbers contest between horse people and dog people. It is about giving everyone a fair opportunity and the freedom  to enjoy our beautiful beaches

·        Dogs are already allowed in the horse area provided they are on the leash

·        Many other beach users enjoy seeing horses at the beach

·        Many of the 21000 registered dog owners would also be horse owners! Just as the vast majority of horse owners are dog owners

·        Dogs can be taken to virtually any park/footpath/public place as well as many other designated beaches. The same cannot be said for horses!

·        Many people travel a long way to enjoy this beach

·        The horse industry is one of the largest industries in Australia and is steadily growing!

·        Closure will greatly reduce the quality of life for a lot of horses kept in an urbanised environment. The beach gives them a chance to stretch their legs and mentally and physically relax

·        Horses have helped to build this country and defend it, we owe it to them to provide a safe place to cool down and relax

·        If the beach is lost it will force people to train and ride in more urban environments such as road verges, where the risk to all parties is greatly increased

·        Horse owners would probably not mind this particular beach being closed to them if they were offered another designated section of the coast in the northern suburbs

·        If anything we should be talking about extending or relocating the horse beach
