Governor Deval Patrick, in a line item veto of the proposed 2010 budget for Massachusetts, cut funding for the Franklin Park Zoo (New England's largest zoo) and the Stoneham Zoo by over 61%, from 6.5 million to only 2.5 milliom. According to Zoo New England, which manages the zoos, such drastic cuts could force the zoos to close, and as many of 20% of the animals currently at the zoos could be killed because officials are unlikely to find new homes for them. (Read more in the Boston Globe)
It would be a travesty and an outrage for the state of Massachusetts to allow these animals to be killed because of budget difficulties. We know that economic times are tough - but these are innocent animals, confined to these zoos by humans. These animals should not suffer for our inability to manage our money.
Whatever your feelings are about zoos, please stand up for the lives of these animals and insist that the state of Massachusetts either restore the funds for the zoos immediately or ensure that ALL animals are relocated to sanctuaries to allow these majestic creatures to live out their lives in peace.

Dear Governor Patrick and Massachusetts senators and representatives:
I am outraged at the budget cuts for the Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo in Stoneham, which according to Zoo New England could result in officials euthenizing up to 20% of the zoo animals due to difficulty in relocating these animals.
The animals in these two zoos were confined to these institutions by humans. These animals bear no responsibility for our budget difficulties and should not suffer such a horrible fate due to our state's financial problems.
I urge you to either reinstate full funding for these zoos or ensure that ALL of the animals are relocated to sanctuaries where they can live their lives out in peace - and provide the necessary support and funding to help sanctuaries accept and house these animals.
We signed the "Don't Kill Boston's Zoo Animals!" petition!

This is a sin!!!These animals should have never been taken for the own natural habitat to start with, now to take them from their imprisoned home is wrong!!!!

The true measure of a man is revealed in what he does with power. Please show you have integrity and restore the appropriate funding so the zoos can immediately relocate animals to sanctuaries where they can live out their lives in the peace they deserve. Remember they didn't ask to be imprisoned in the first place. Man inflicted that upon them for his own greed and shallow amusement as usual.

Why is it so easy to just kill. Find ways to become humane and protect these animals.

Who the hell are humans to capture God's children and keep them prisoner and after they've had their fun with the animals kill them? All animals will be avenged some day.

Please ensure that the animals are moved to sanctuaries and NOT killed. What a shameful thing that would be,

I am very saddened that the state is not interested in the zoos--I think that these institutions have done to help bring awareness of endangered species and others to people. Now, I ask that you help restore the funding so that people can continue to be inspired by them and perhaps even become protectors of the wild places where these animals truly belong.
