One of the many stunning mountain views in Gros Morne Park. One of Canada's most scenic National Parks, Gros Morne is Western Newfoundland's biggest tourist attraction, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Save our National Park

Target:
Hon. Jim Prentice, Minister Responsible for Parks Canada
Sponsored by:
One of Canada's most scenic National Parks, Gros Morne is a natural wonder. Its pristine environment and geological significance has earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The Park is also the economic mainstay for a number of small communities in Western Newfoundland, as it attracts tens of thousands of tourists, adventurers, photographers, artists, actors, musicians, scientists, and curiosity-seekers from around the world.

The provincial government wants to replace many of the stunning scenic vistas with a gigantic hydroelectric transmission line that will cut a large swath through the Park. In the name of 'economic progress' for communities hundreds of miles away, Labrador will see its largest river dammed yet again, and Western Newfoundland its most important tourist attraction permanently scarred. Yet the 'precious' hydroelectric power won't serve any of the residents affected by this ill-conceived and inefficient power project.

You can help save Gros Morne by signing this petition, and telling Canada's Minister of the Environment to stand firm against this proposed development, and uphold the mandate of Parks Canada, which is to: "...protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada's natural and cultural heritage, and foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure the ecological and commemorative integrity of these places for present and future generations."

We the undersigned respectfully request that you uphold the commitments of the Parks Canada Charter, for which you are the Minister responsible, by protecting, as a first priority, the natural and cultural heritage of Gros Morne National Park and ensuring it remains healthy and whole.

The Park's many friends, visitors and residents alike urge you to take all necessary actions and exercise all statutory and regulatory authority to prevent this proposed hydroelectric transmission line, thereby preserving Gros Morne's beauty, its international reputation, and its cultural and economic importance for generations to come.

We trust that you will live up to the Parks Canada mandate, consider our UNESCO obligations, and respect the wishes of local residents.

Say 'no' to an ill-conceived transmission line through OUR National Park.

I live in the middle of Gros Morne and the last thing I want to see is huge hydro towers spoiling my view; especially on a sunny morning when I'm having my morning coffee and looking at Gros Morne mountain.

I can't really say I have one favorite spot in Gros Morne, the natural pristine beauty. I have been in Gros Morne visiting my Aunt and Uncle when I was a child. I went back with my Husband and son this July. I have to say I was overwhelmed with the untouched beauty of the park. We stayed in Rocky Harbor, hiked, learned loads at the discovery centre, the marine station, Western Brook Pond tour was spectacular! Please consider the future when making decisions that impact the entire planet.

Gros Morne is the most beautiful and vast area I have ever had the priviledge of visiting. While there I was shocked at its pristine beauty and it is one of the world's finest natural wonders and it would be a total shame to let any part of it destroyed especially to make a corridor for power lines. I never thought I would see the day that a Newfoundland premier would actually even consider this to happen. shocking.

I live in Nova Scotia

I love everything about the park. Every corner is so diverse and unique in it's own way.

I visited Gros Morne National Park for the second time last week and fell in love with the area. I will be retuning again for sure! This area needs to be preserved for the future and left untouched for future generations to enjoy!

Very difficult to choose just one spot, as the whole area is breathtakingly beautiful. I have enjoyed the Park for many years and would like to think that people in the years to come will have the same opportunity. Please do not allow this power project to be built inside Gros Morne Park.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Gros Morne National Park with my family and found it to be one of the most beautiful parks in our country. It's hills, forests, streams and gorges are absolutely specatacular. In a day in age when so much of the natural beauty of our wonderful country is being usurped, I would plead that the wonder heritage be left untouched.

I love the hiking trails throughout the park unspoiled by scars of transmission lines

Our family has challets in the Bonne Bay area. I will eventually be a resident of NL and will vote for party that saves the park from desecration.

Don't destroy the treasures of nature Canada and especially NL have to offer. In times where such treasures are more and more disappearing due to industrialization and the growing poplulation, beautiful places like this should be preserved as much as possible and not destroyed.

Gros Morne is undeniably one of the most beautiful places in Canada, a unique and invaluable resource. My favourite place in the park is Site 43, Trout River Campground, where I have just spent a week. To desecrate this UNESCO site would be an unspeakable horror.

I have, with my husband, visited Gros Morne 4 times, hiked many of its trails, including the James Callaghan climb to the mountain itself. I want it to be there always!

Western Brook, Gros Morne Mountain, Table lands, etc to name a few. But I love everything about Gros Morne National Park. Whats not to love, it is breathe taking and the most beautiful place in the world. I am proud to call it "Home" ..How can we in the name of "economic progress" take away the beauty of nature and replace it with something non-benifical to the residents of Newfoundland. I think someone needs to seriously re-think the whole concept and whether we wish to negatively impact such a beautiful National Park in the name of economic gain and progress. Is it worth it and at what cost????

I was born and raised in Norris Point Newfoundland. It is my home and it would be a devastation to many who live there not to mention those who travel from far away to view such a natural beauty - why change that? At what cost and is it really worth the "economic progress" so to speak?

I have to say that driving down over southeast hill towards Rocky Harbour is one of many favorite spots for me. I just love tipping the hill and seeing the mist from the falls and the hills beyond. It's beautiful in every season.

I am originally from Rocky Harbour, now living in Pasadena.

I grew up in NL and visted my relatives on the Northern Peninsula every chance I could.Always to spend some time winter or summer in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Gros Morne. I've hiked to the top and was rewarded with many a glimpse of the wildlife that abounds.I encourage friends to visit the park as they are touring NL. I can't help but think this transmission line will jeopardize wildlife and ecological environment. Our government should rethink thisproposed developement.
