Save Lives Now: Protect the Future of Philadelphia's Animals

Target:
Mayor Michael Nutter and City Council Members, City of Philadelphia
We, the undersigned, are outraged and appalled that the Philadelphia Department of Public Health is signing a death sentence for thousands of animals. The lifesaving achievements of the last three years are to celebrated and furthered, not abandoned. We will not go back to a time when most homeless animals are killed. Classifying them simply as objects to be collected and disposed of like garbage is unacceptable. We demand that the Health Department rescind its current request for proposal for animal control services and rewrite it to require lifesaving. The agency that holds this contract must achieve progressive save rates -- with a starting place of 60% of the total number of animals who enter the shelter alive, the current level -- using all of the tools known to achieve those rates (adoption outreach, foster care, volunteerism, collaboration with rescue and shelter partners, and spay/neuter services) so Philadelphia continues moving closer to the goal of guaranteeing a home for every healthy and treatable pet. We will not allow this city to turn its back on Philadelphia's animals.

On behalf of Philadelphia's homeless animals, thank you for supporting this petition. City leaders have heard your voices loud and clear and have acknowledged that lifesaving is a valued component of animal control efforts. There is still a long road ahead to ensure that our current save rate (60% of the total number of animals who enter the shelter alive) is used as the a place from which to proceed forward, so that Philadelphia continues moving closer to being a no-kill city in which every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home. But we believe that with the collaboration of City government, animal control, and other animal welfare agencies, this goal is very much within reach. We will present each and every one of your comments to City leaders as we continue to advocate for a measurable commitment to continued lifesaving.

So many saved strays have brought so many people joy and love, including myself. I cannot imagine my life without my Lucy, who was picked up as a stray last year and whom I adopted from the SPCA. She is the best dog I have ever had in my life. These animals are the kindest and gentlest of all, and in the most need of our help and compassion. It is our most beloved historic leaders and thinkers who have paved the way for us to understand the value of and animals lives; Albert Einstein, Mahatma Ghandi, Thomas A. Edison, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Emile Zola, Abraham Lincoln, Tolstoy, George Bernard Shaw, and so many more have told us time and again that it is immoral to treat animals as anything but our equals in their rights to life. I say, we take a note from them. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Ghandi

As stated above, I adopted a young dog from the Pennsylvania SPCA and she has been a constant source of joy. My life is more complete, sane, bearable than it was before her, and I know of so many more people who have found the same happiness from adopting an an animal, that so many who have bought them do not.

Although I believe the root of the problem is that people need to spay and neuter their animals, killing them for "convenience" is not the answer. Please know that there are so many families, single people, children, elderly that benefit is HUGE ways from having a pet. These animals, when possible, should be placed in a loving home...

I had a rescue dog for 11 years. She had issues for sure, but she was the most loving creature I've known and would not have traded those amazing years for anything!....

My pets means the world to me.

When we first moved to Perkasie, there was a hurt cat and we took it in and took care of it[vets, shots, ect.] untill it was healed and then we gave it to a neighboor as a barn cat.

Show how much you love animals of every species (humans included). Go vegan, save lives, and work towards a greener environment!

The SPCA on Erie Ave. is Philly's best place to find some great companionship.

Animals are unique and amazing creatures and should be respected and loved. I've met three service dogs in the last week who are just like those who might be euthanized if this contract is fulfilled. They provide love and perform services that people are not capable of performing. Spay / neuter and no kill should be the city's goals. I won't live in a city where my lost pet might be euthanized before being returned to me.

All but two of the many animals my husband and I have lived with have been adopted from shelters.

Mayor Nutter, I voted for you but if you don't take immediate steps to resolve this issue you will lose my support.

All of my animal companions have been rescued in one way or another. They are not my "pets" but rather members of the family. I am disgusted by the proposal of a catch and kill animal shelter. Every animal in such a "shelter" shuold be replaced by a local politician - with Mayor Nutter first in line.

We have 5 animals, all of whom were rescued. We can't imagine not having these furry family members, three dogs and two bunnies, because they bring such light into our lives. Animals deserve a chance to be rehomed, NOT killed because they ended up with an irresponsible owner their first go-round in life.

We heavily support rescue and rehoming efforts because of the fabulous animals we have enriching our lives every single day that were all once on 'death row' at a kill shelter. Our beloved yellow Lab had already been taken down to the kill room and by complete luck, on all sides, we were able to save him and have loved him unconditionally for the past 5 years.

I have always loved animals more than anything. They are there for you & love you unconditionally. They depend on us to help take care of them & I could not imagine treating an animal like it does not have feelings. To anyone who has not had an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened.

My cat Ashley died of kidney disease over a year ago. It took a while but I am ready to adopt again. I am in the process of adopting a cat who has been waiting a very long time for her forever home. I am very excited for this new addition to my home, it feels so empty with no animal to love.

Our two dogs are our children. We have never called them "the dogs" we refer to them as "the boys". All animals should be treated as part of the family. Please help.

I adopted my pit bull, Violet, from the PAWS boutique on 2nd St. in January. Violet is a sweet and loving dog, but her breed is misunderstood. Without the committment of PAWS to place hard-to-adopt pets, I shudder to think what would have become of my beloved pet.

I myself have a blue nose pitbull names Bella. She is the world to me and i love her with all my heart. I would do anything for her. If she got lost and I could not find her for some reason I would not want her to go to a shelter that kills animals. i would hope that another loving family would take her and make her happy. I SAY NO TO A SHELTER THAT KILLS ANIMALS.

Philadelphia needs to come up tothe gold standard. It is time that we have a no-kill shelter. All this killing is terrible. PAWS helps alleviate the sensless killing.

I have taken in two stray dogs in the past. I was happy to provide the love and good home they needed to survive. They were loved and treated as family members. They were so happy and appreciative. They brought unimaginable joy. If I were to have another pet, I would only adopt from a shelter in order to save a life.

I must reiterate that the attempt to save city budget funds (the fundamental problem here) in the short run will no doubt end up costing greatly, financially and ethically, in the long run. Sadly, I believe that although Philadelphia could have a great deal to offer it's citizens in general, it prefers to be complacent and lag behind other large, progressive cities, especially in it's no-kill movement. The decision to end PACCA's contract with PAWS has solidified my belief that those running Philadelphia choose not to see the facts inherent in this matter, and instead would rather institute out dated policies from another era.

I have previously and continue to reside with adopted animals, many of whom I have saved from streets myself or adopted from area shelters. These companions have been a pride and joy in my life, and have brought me countless hours of happiness. In conclusion, I will just say that the manner in which a city chooses to relate to it's animals says much about the city itself. I implore you to please allow PACCA to continue working with PAWS in order to further adoption efforts.

I love animals. All of my pets have come to me via adoptions. Even my lizards. All animals deserve the chance to have a loving family that cares about them. My pets arent just animals to me they are my family.

like I said before my pets arent just animals they are my family. I dont know where I would be if I didnt have the undying love of my pets. All my pets have come from shelters, I have never in my whole life bought a pet from a store.I even adopted hamsters from my local spca. I feel that all animals deserve a loving home, and if I could I would adopt them all.

I just lost my beloved dog, Luckie, after having the honor of living with him for the past 14 years of his life. I wish for every potential companion animal to be treated with the same love, dignity, respect, and consideration that Luckie was treated with. It is the very least they deserve considering how loving and intelligent animals are.

I just lost my dog of 14 years but when I am ready to live with another companion animal, I will adopt one from a shelter or rescue organization. There is no other responsible and ethical choice to make.

I have had three cats for quite some time now. One is 17 years old and the other, a brother and sister are 13 years old. They are like children to me. One passed on a few weeks ago and I went through a grieving period, just as if a child had died. A pet gives unconditional love to you, 24/7. They are integrated in your lives. They each have their own personality, habits. To say they are just objects with no feelings is absurd.

Although I did not adopt my cats through an agency, one was found abandoned in an old barn at the brink of death, and the other two were found as infants. They know how lucky they are to have found a good home. The one that we saved actually has the look of love in her eyes when she looks at my husband who saved her.

Our pets are not just our pets. They is members of our family. We love them and treat him as if they are our children.

In my family, growing up with my parents and the family I currently have with my husband, we have ALWAYS adopted. Saving animals from euthanasia and cruelty was just something that was bred into me to be RIGHT. How could it be WRONG? These animals deserve loving homes and families and more people should adopt rather than buy, since the money is going back to puppy mills where they are most likely mistreated until someone comes and purchases them.

My family and I have, over the years, adopted several animals, mainly pitbull breeds, through paws and similar groups. All of these animals have proven to be more than just pets. They are loyal and intelligent and an enriching part of our family. We are better for having them. These animals deserve to live and deserve good homes. THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!!

I have been sponsering PAWS for a bit now and believe in thier mission. I believe that so many people have finally opened thier eyes to the injustices that are being done unto the animals of this world. It is time now to stop treating animals as if they do not have feelings or purposes. Please do not further mistreat them as we are now finally getting more attention to stop the cruel mistreatment of animals.

As the owner of two dogs, a cat, and two guinea pigs i am outraged by the city's lackadaisical attitude towards animals. its not as if these animals had any choice as far as the situation they are in. Sure we have millions to give to some bozo for carrying a ball across the goal line or for putting a ball in a basket but we cant take care of our strays. But then again that doesn't surprise me coming from a city that preaches brotherly love but rarely attains it. You people suck!

Yes. One of our dogs was adopted from a shelter and our cat was a stray.

The way we treat our vulnerable animals reflects our values. The work of PAWS and other rescue and no-kill shelter organizations should be lauded. If the city of Philadelphia wants to scale back the number of abondoned animals, an alternative to killing them is to pass legislation that prohibits animal retailers from breeding and selling animals for profit and to inflict fines on individuals who do the same.

Animals are citizens just like people. Would we dispose of "stray" people like we are proposing to do to animals? My adopted animals taught me what it means to love and care for another - is there anything of more value than that? The animals we share Philadelphia with cannot speak for themselves so I am speaking out for them. How could you put a plan in place to just kill them for the sake of convenience and cost? How could you do that??? There are other solutions that have a track record of working. Please reconsider your position. Please...

I am the proud owner of an American Bull Terrier rescued by PAWS. It is also important to note that I was actively searching for a breeder to purchase a dog from and went to PAWS because of an outreach program. When I realized the number of animals needing a home, I knew I couldn't bring another into the universe. One furry face saved because PAWS is committed to no kill..... how many would be lost if that policy changed?

my dogs are my best friends. i will forever protect them with my life.

yes, we did, in fact rescue our dogs from shelters. i can't comprehend how a person could opt to own a pet, and not choose rescuing one before going to a breeder, or buying from some other source. With the number of animals who are already in dire need of a caring home, it's sickening to think that people would choose to overlook this.

PLEASE remember that ALL stray animals deserve another chance! Another shot at life. Just because ONE human thinks it's ok to throw an animal away like trash doesn't mean the majority of Philadelphians agree with that!! One person's trash is another's treasure. All 3 of my dogs are adopted. I didn't buy any of them. Adopting a dog is saving a life and more and more people are willing to adopt these days!! Don't forget that!

A year and a half ago, someone from Street Tails (a rescue in Philly) found an emaciated, very ill shar pei on the streets of Kensington. I was looking to foster a dog and this one came into my life. I took her to vets and had her treated for eye infections and skin problems. She is a very special animal and I cannot think of life without her! She is so funny and is so SO sweet that I decided to keep her!! It makes me extremely sad and upset to think that Mayor Nutter wants to kill the strays of Philly simply because they are lost. Someone will find them and want them some day. So many organizations TRY SO HARD to get homes for homeless animals. Morally - is killing an innocent animal for the simple fact that it's HOMELESS the RIGHT thing to do??? I think not. Ask your heart this question.
