Sean Bell and his family.

Justice For Sean Bell, Justice for All

Target:
Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey
Sean Bell was due to be married on Nov. 25, 2006 but instead he got killed after his bachelor party in a hail of 50 bullets fired by a group of NYPD officers. Two of Sean's friends were also injured in the shooting. Sean, a 23-year-old African American man from New York, was unarmed. On April 25, 2008, after a seven-week trial without a jury, three of the police officers were cleared of all charges.

Police officers should resort to force only when strictly unavoidable to protect human life. We are outraged to see we have a legal system that would allow anyone in law enforcement to fire 50 shots at an unarmed man and get away with it.

But sadly, this is not an isolated incident. It is part of a vicious pattern of police brutality and racial profiling that can only lead to further violence and injustice.

It's time to speak out for victims of police brutality like Sean Bell, and to demand change and rights for all. The Department of Justice is currently investigating the case of Sean Bell for violations of federal criminal civil rights statutes. Please take a minute to sign this petition urging Attorney General Mukasey to take immediate steps to ensure that abuses by police officers will not be tolerated, that officers will be held accountable for their actions, and that there will be justice for Sean Bell and his family.

Sean Bell was supposed to get married in November 2006 but instead he got killed in a hail of 50 bullets fired by a group of NYPD police officers. By April 2008, after a seven-week trial without a jury, three of the police officers were found "not guilty."

Sadly, Sean's death is not an isolated incident. It is part of a vicious pattern of police brutality and racial profiling that can only lead to further violence and injustice.

Every individual has the fundamental right to equal protection under the law regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, or religion. As you investigate the case of Sean Bell for violations of federal criminal civil rights statutes, we urge you to take immediate steps to ensure that abuses by police officers will not be tolerated anymore, that officers will be held accountable for their actions, and that there will be justice for Sean Bell and his family.

This is the land of the free!! The police are free to shoot u and get away with it. The sayings goes sins of the father the sons will pay, trust it the police will pay spritually, no amount of money will replace what was taken!! That judge will also pay for not doing right. The act of firing over 50 more rounds was crimnial! In time, In time! They will start to hurt each other and each others familes. You now see! crime pays!! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/nyc-family-court-judge-susan-knipps-and-the-administration-for-childern-services-gangster-style-tact

It's so hard for me to understand how this family has not got thier justice. This was a young man about to get married and start a new chapter in his life but instead was killed for no reason. I'm hurt that the police officers "think" they got away with a crime that leaves me heart broken. The officers in this case will get thier punishment here on earth and at judgement day. See the punishment that the Lord will give will be like no other.

I find it disappointing that officers in this country do not feel it is their duty to "protect and serve" the black american male because of how they view them on a whole. Each individual black male is unique in character and personality and should NOT be penalized for the actions of others. The FBI reported that 1 of 10 white men in america ages 18-35 are serial killers but we do not see an increase in police killing white men in america in effort to protect the lives of the community where these white people live. I'd like to know why a black man standing outside of club appears to be more dangerous in the eyes of the cops than repeated white pedophiles that prey our the community's children? when our nation can address this question i will view our justice system as fair. While i don't know all the details of this particular case and why there was no jury hearing (not that it would matter) i'm sick of reading headlines of unarmed black men being shot down by the same officers vowing to protect and serve the community.

Some police officers seem to think they can act without impunity, and they will continue to think that unless they are held responsible for their actions. They are citizens first, not police, and should be held to the same laws and punishments as the rest of us. Does anyone remember Amadou Diallo from NYC about 10 years ago? It is a sad case of history repeating itself, and it won't be the last one unless something is finally done.

I am a single black woman with 3 kids, 2 which are 13/14 year old boys. I try to raise them right and teach them right from wrong/good from bad/do's and don'ts but when we sit and watch TV and hear about how these "SO CALLED POLICEMEN" and I'm using those words very loosely, get off for killing someone who could be 1 of my sons in the near future, it makes my stomach turn. When my boys asked why would the system let off people that are so so so guilty of protecting and serving, I don't know what to tell them. I tell them cops are our friends/they are here for us and to hear my son go from I wanna be a ploiceman when I grow up, to cops get away with murder mom and I don't wanna be that type of person, kills my heart b/c that was his dream..My son has nothing but bad to say about our system now and wants nothing to do with it so I ask u, Attorney General, what do we tell our children of the future about how we let bad people get away with bad things b/c they wear a badge?????
