Re: Seatbelts on School Buses

There should be seatbelts on every school bus across the U.S.  I have written into the government regarding that children on buses are not safe without seatbelts and when I received a letter back I was told that they are protected by the high seats on the buses.  While high seats give children a little protection in an accident, seatbelts will give them a lot more protection.  Children have been killed in school bus accidents here in the U.S.  Just like you are driving in your car, the high seat will give you a little protection but not much.  It is necessary to have seatbelts in private vehicles to save lives and it is also necessary to have them in school buses to protect the children’s lives.

"Our children are our future" is the quote I always hear when I protest my high school taxes when I have never had children and haven't "taxed" the system with any cost for futue children's education. That said, I do have a niece and nephew and most my friends have children and grandchildren and it does seem unbalanced to have all the laws in place regarding seat belts and then the one large vehicle (bus) where there are several children together there is no restraint system in place to insure their safety. It really makes no pratical sense. If the children are our future then protect them and give them every opportunity to be safe and get that very expensive education that we all pay for.

The law mandates (and for good reason) that everyone is to wear a seatbelt in a moving auto. Leaving out School busses and all busses for that matter is a clear indication that the law makers are making decisions with money as their driver, not the safety of people. How can you sleep at night knowing that you are risking the safety, even lives of children by ignoring this problem? PLEASE make this a law!!

As A Chiropractor, I see injuries that are the result of falls and jolts from everyday school bus trips. These don't even involve accidents. If the children were buckled in, they would be still and behave like they do in their own autos. An accident results in a much worse set of circumstances. I believe that the law is on the side of cost, not safety. As a Dr.and a Grandparent, I implore you to make our children safe..Make seatbelts in ALL Busses a law!

I think if you put seatbelts...make sure too that they will use it or you have to have something like a law or whatever just like those with private cars.. :)))

Seatbelts would ensure that during an accident a small child would not fall into the aisle or under the seats.

It's unbelievable that school buses have no seatbelts. We get tickets for not having our children in seatbelts in cars. I can't understand the reasoning for not having seatbelts in school buses. If there's an accident on these buses, children can go flying over the seats and get killed. THERE ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE SEATBELTS ON SCHOOL BUSES AND THIS SHOULD BE A LAW!!!!!

It is against the law in my state of Washington to drive or be in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt. To protect each individual from severe injury and possible death. We make it a priority and safety for our children when they are in any other moving vehicle. Why then, is it not important enough for us to protect our children when they are on school buses? The risks are just the same if they are in a major accident in a school bus as they are in any other vehicle in my opinion. Please save and protect our children's lives.

I have always wondered why on earth we do not have seat belts on buses to protect out more precious assets. These children are our future and just as we make sure they are protected in our cars and all walks of life, they should be protected on their way to and from school.

It is outrageous that MOST school buses do not include safety belts. On all of the field trips my child has taken, not one bus provided seat belts. Why is it the law to buckle up our children in cars but not buses? We need to send the message to our children that buckling up saves lives and we want them to be in the habit of using safety belts. What kind of message are we sending them? Also, bus drivers should not be allowed to use a cell phone while driving other than for emergency purposes; that only increases the risk of an accident while driving a bus full of unrestrained children! I see this occur on a weekly basis.

Children's safety should be our number one concern. It is our responsibility as adults to protect our future and any educated person knows the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt. I don't care how high the seats are. Stop making excuses to save a dime!!! Do what's right!

Not only should children be guaranteed a safe ride to school, but they also should be LEARNING that seat belts are a habit when in a vehicle.

Today was my first child's first day on the bus and to my astonishment when I went to check the condition and the safety of the bus my child would be riding I was horrified to see and be told that there are no seat belts on bus'! What kind of logic is this?? We are entrusting a school district to safely deliver our children and all of the simplest precautions are not being met. We as parents are by LAW expected to have our children in car seats, because putting them in a car with just the seat belt on is not enough and deemed not safe enough, but putting them in a school bus bench seat where they slide around, get up on their knees, get out of their seats and can rough house with each other is SAFE?????? There isn't even another adult that is not paying attention to the driving on the bus to monitor their activities. How is this SAFE???? The bus does not even have to be a part of a collision for this to be an unsafe situation for our children. Having a high seat back is your answer to safety? It is definitely NOT mine! My seats in my car are high too, and do not allow for a child to slide onto the floor, but that is not safe by law, but its safe in a bus full of our children. Where is the logic here?? This situation needs to be rectified, immediately! I am completely dismayed at the lack of responsibility of the state and each school district, involved in this criminal omission of our child's safety!
