Send Lucy to the Tennesse Elephant sanctuary

Please support the Zoocheck Canada/Voice for Animals campaign to relocate Lucy, the sole remaining elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, to the Elephant Sanctuary, a world renowned 2,700 acre natural habitat elephant facility, in Tennessee.

With the transfer of Samantha, a female African elephant, to the North Carolina Zoo in 2007, Lucy has been alone. She is overweight, suffering from chronic arthritis and foot problems, lethargic and displays prolonged periods of abnormal stereotypic behaviours, such as rocking and swaying.

Elephants, particularly females, are highly social animals that live in matriarchal family groups for most, if not all, of their lives. They should never be kept alone.

With the 2008 transfer of Maggie, a female elephant at the Alaska Zoo, to a sanctuary in California, Lucy is now the most northerly and socially isolated elephant on the continent.

The Valley Zoo has stated that it has no plans to move Lucy, that she is not a social elephant and that she is fine where she is. Not only are these statements contrary to everything that is known about the biology and behaviour of elephants, it also is contrary to Alberta's own zoo regulations which require that animals be kept in appropriate social environments.

The Valley Zoo also claims a mal-positioned molar in association with another medical condition make it dangerous to move Lucy, but they ignore the fact that elephants, many with serious health issues, are routinely moved from facility to facility and have been for more than 150 years.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is municipally-owned and operated, so the City of Edmonton has the authority to determine how the zoo operates and what decisions are made.

Please write to the City of Edmonton Mayor and Members of Council, to let them know that you want Lucy moved to The Elephant Sanctuary as soon as possible. Tell them that Lucy should not be kept alone; that Edmonton is too cold for elephants; that the zoo's elephant exhibit is too small; and that keeping Lucy is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.

Please add your signature to the petition which will be sent to Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel.

This poor animal is not meant to endure Canada's cold winter. She's also not meant to live her life alone with all sorts of health problems. Please do what's best and what's right for Lucy.

please do the right thing by this poor elephant and send her to an elephant sanctuary without delay. she deserves to be free of this horrible enclosure, to interact and roam with her own kind, to choose how she lives her life.

It's high time for some empathy and kindness. Animals are individuals; let's stop jerking them around just because we can. Lucy deserves better than to be jailed up here in the frozen North.

I received this update today & just last night I was thinking about Lucy & wondering how she was doing. It's no less than criminal to not allow her to go to Tennessee to roam free with her own kind. Please, please, please for dear, extraordinarly intelligent, thinking, feeling & profoundly sad Lucy, do the right thing & send her where she belongs.

This is disgusting. Lucy deserves a better environment and companionship.
# 890:

Lucy has been in complete isolation for the majority of her 34 years. Since female elephants are HIGHLY social and live with their immediate and extended families for their whole lives in the wild, her facilities are completely inappropriate and INADEQUATE. Please help get her out of the Edmonton Zoo and into an elephant sanctuary today!!

Elephants do not like to be alone. They are hugh but, very gentle and intelligent. Please allow this beautiful animal to live out her years at the Elephant Sanctuary!!

Lucy should not be left in solitary confinement, it is a cruel punishment for any animal or person.

This is one where zoo officials and the politicians are digging their heels in and seem even more determined to resist public opinion. The question is whether our will is stronger than theirs!

The well being of Lucy must be the first concern. It is a proven fact they suffer when they live alone. The Zoo does not depend on her being there to survive. Please do the right thing and release her to live out her life with other elephants as it should be

Elephants are very smart and need to be in an environment where they can enjoy their life. The Elephant Sanctuary is a wonderful place. They love the elephants and she will have a good life there with others of her species.

Please let Lucy retire to a warmer climate with lots of elephant friends around. She needs an elephant family and to walk on soft grassy terrain, swim and play in lakes when she wants or be in a warm comfortable barn with other elephants with lots of enrichment to keep her mind and spirit occupied. Her life in cold solitary confinement needs to end before she dies, please let her have enjoyment now and let her go to The Elephant Sanctuary. You will be admired and respected if you can find it in your hearts to let her move. Thank you.

We want to see Lucy moved to The Elephant Sanctuary. She should not be alone, as elephants are highly intelligent and live in matriarchal groups. She should not be in such an unsuitably cold climate. She is displaying the poor health that zoo elephants develop: being overweight, arthritis, foot and joint problems from not being able to walk the vast distances that elephants need to, which ultimately result in death. She is displaying neurotic behavior because she is alone and living in an improper setting. Her life will be greatly shortened if she is not moved to a sanctuary that can meet all the needs of elephants. Given these facts, keeping Lucy in the Edmonton Zoo is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.

Send Lucy to the sanctuary. she will die if she remains isolated. I love her dearly, I used to live in Edmonton and saw her regularly at the zoo. She is NOT happy.

if this was a human being treated this way, there would be a world wide outcry.. but because she is "just an animal" (and profitable at that) her welfare is not considered. she needs to be with others of her kind that she can bond, communicate, relax and love... keeping animals in zoos such as these is like keeping humans in a concentration camp... and we dont allow those, so why should animals endure such inhuman torture?
# 862:

PLEASE free Lucy!! Her LIFE depends on it!!
# 861:

We need to discontinue making decisions based on money. These intelligent and sensitve animals belong amonst their own kind. Thankfully there are options to correct her situation in isolation. Please allow her transfer to the Elephant Sanctuary.
# 860:
3:15 pm PDT, Sep 19, Linda Sear, Canada
I am disgusted with the city council of Edmonton and Valley Zoo in their refusal to allow Lucy to be transferred to an animal sanctuary. It's very clear that they won't allow this because she is the zoo's "cash cow" that helps draw visitors and they do not want to lose her (really the profits is more like it!) A cold climate such as Edmonton's is NO place for an elephant. She belongs with her own kind and in a much warmer climate where she can walk for miles, have access to water, and socialize with other elephants like elephants are MEANT to do!!!

Elephants are incredibly intelligent and social animals who really do require interaction with conspecifics. Please let Lucy live out her life in a sanctuary.

If those who saw her at the zoo knew of her pain and emotional unhappiness they would never support the zoo. Animals must be treated humanely. We could learn much about love from animals. Send Lucy to Tennessee, a place where she will not be cold and lonely. If man has not compassion to guide his intellect what indeed do we have?
