Sergeant Allen Cockfield of the Miami-Dade Police Department was recently charged with felony animal

Update 2: 12/12/07 FYI Vicks got 23 months for his dog abuse. Lets hope Sgt. Cockfield gets more than just this slap on the hand. I will let you know Dec. 17 what the outcome of the continuence is for him.

Update: the trial has been postponed until Dec. 17th., 2007 at which time I believe it will be continued again due to the Holidays that will follow.
Cockfield has been terminated due to his arrest and until he is sentenced, assuming  he will be found guilty, he will not be able to ever get his job back. He will never work with animals again. Thats a given. The other officers did not stand there doing nothing, this is the reporters words. Their words were it happened so fast that Duke was down before anyone could get to him. He was immediately scooped into a cruiser and taken to the Emergency hospital but he could not be revived. HE was already Gone.
6 of the ten officers there were close enough to witness the entire thing and turned Cockfield in, which is never done to a superior officer. These officers should be commended for their ability to see what is really important. The truth, no matter what the cost. They are all sickened by Dukes demise.

Police Officer Accused of Killing K-9 Partner

"Take Action" to ask State Attorney to seek maximum sentence

Sergeant Allen Cockfield of the Miami-Dade Police Department was recently charged with felony animal cruelty charges for allegedly kicking his K-9 partner Duke to death during an obedience training exercise.. The reason, according to an anonymous witness: Duke barked when he wasn't supposed to, so Cockfield hoisted the four-year-old German shepherd by the leash around his neck and repeatedly kicked him in a fit of rage until he lost consciousness. Duke reportedly died later at a veterinary clinic from injuries sustained during the attack.

Following the incident, the Miami-Dade Police Department suspended Cockfield from duty without pay, and opened an internal affairs investigation of his violent actions. After his arrest, Cockfield was released on bail. Miami-Dade police told reporters that Cockfield, a veteran of the force with 27 years experience, is a model officer with a file full of commendations and no history of disciplinary problems. However, with more than two decades of K-9 training under his belt, it is possible that this is just the first time this loose cannon got caught or reported for abusing an animal.
Duke had a heart attack from his brain being deprived of blood basically. Other officers tried to help but Duke was DOA. They have testified to the effect of Cockfield being arrested. No one wants to see Mr. Cockfield get away with this. I don't want him to take a  plead deal  in return for his pension and benefits when he gets out of jail. Those are our tax dollars. He deserves Nothing.

Sergeant Allen Cockfield's trial is scheduled to begin on September 24th. Tel: (305) 547-0664

Please call or write to the state attorney asking her to push for the maximum with NO plea deals that will allow this man to get his pension and retirement benefits. Duke gets no benefits, never did.

We the undersigned want to see Allen Cockfield prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for his horrific crime in Miami Dade County  if and when he is found guilty. We Don't want to see him given the opportunity for  a Plea deal giving him a lighter sentence or any type of deal that would allow him to receive his pension or any benefits from the Department of Miami Dade Police. Furthermore, he should never be allowed back on the Dept. in any capacity or be employed in the county of Miami Dade. if for some reason he is not found guilty of this witnessed crime.
We feel Duke was his partner and therefore this is a type of manslaughter.
PLease don't let this slip through the cracks.

This is barbaric - worrisome also for citizens. If this can be done to a dog (his partner?) what might happen to a person? I sincerely believe that the treatment of animals is related to one's treatment of humans.

I find it difficult to believe that this officer was considered a model officer and perhaps this is due to 'undetected' crime. I certainly would not rely on this peace officer to protect me. Hold him accountable, and ensure that he is given a strict sentance and hit his wallet at the same time. Perhaps a heafty donation to shelters that have to deal with costly bills to 'fix' abused animals. Shame on him - what a poor example of justice.

Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Esq. Felony Prosecutions & Administration 1350 N.W. 12 Avenue Miami, FL 33136-2111 Re: August 20, 2007 National Inquirer Article – “Sergeant” Allen Cockfield Dear Ms. Rundle: I am writing regarding an article in the August 20, 2007 edition of the National Inquirer. The article featured a very disheartening story about one of Florida’s very own police officers who essentially committed murder to a helpless German shepherd during a field-training exercise. I find it even more disturbing that the consequence that this individual faces resembles merely a slap on the wrist. Although it is inconceivable to conclude that the justice system would allow this so-called “sergeant” to commit such a cruel, utterly repulsive act with very little repercussions, it leaves us no other choice. The article, in pertinent part, reads as follows: “According to the North American Police Work Dog Association’s secretary, Jim Watson, it is unacceptable to use the harsh methods of training witnesses claim Sgt. Cockfield used on Duke. ‘Our association does not condone kicking, hitting or abusing dogs as a method of training…It should not be tolerated.’” Evidently, the North American Police Work Dog Association strictly forbids any animal abuse and/or cruelty, including but not limited to, “kicking, hitting or abusing” an animal. Mr. Cockfield should be punished not only for the vicious act itself, but for violating its rules and regulations. Duke, as a fellow K-9 officer of the law, should not have died as a result of Mr. Cockfield’s thoughtless, cruel, evil, injurious, despicable, horrendous conduct. The applicable Florida Penal Statute, Section 828.12 Re: Cruelty to Animals reads as follows: (2) A person who intentionally commits an act to any animal which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering, or causes the same to be done, is guilty of a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $10,000, or both. * * * Florida Penal Statute, Section 775: (d) provides punishment for a felony of the third degree, by a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years. The culpability of Mr. Cockfield is undisputed and overwhelming. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and should be allowed no mercy whatsoever. Any plea bargain and/or clemency for being a so-called “officer of the law” would cause an uproar. Respectfully, Heather D. McNair Enclosure(s) cc: Chief John F. Killing his K-9 partner is the same as killing his human partner as far as I am concerned. He should get the maximum sentence and not get any police pensions. He is a disgrace to human race.

Killing his K9 partner is the same as killing a human partner. This man needs to be booted out of the police force with no benefits and forced to pay compensation to the K9 training unit. To think that there are police like him supposedly protecting the public is despicable.

This is absolutely terrible. It really makes me angry when police officers get away with doing horrible things like this just because they are police officers. It's unfair. Is this what they call justice?

Allen Cockifield should be kicked to death, but since our laws do not permit this, he should be punished to the highest extent of the law and never be permitted to work in any kind of law enforcement. Imagine if he snapped and kicked a person to death--imagine if that person was of a different race!! One crazy cop can start a race riot, or just kill for no good reason.

Please give psychological testing to these police officers on a regular basis to help recognize someone who is on the edge. This story is sickening and Allen Cockfield is a disgrace to the human race.

Shame on Allen Cockfield for taking the life of his K9 Partner. As mom to a K9, I know firsthand that there is nothing these amazing dogs won't do for their handlers and every single handler I know would do absolutely anything in the world for their K9. What a disgrace you are!

It saddens and sickens me what people will do to animals. We are supposed to be the superior race however at times it doesn't seem to be that way. I hope this person gets the maximum penalty for doing what he did. To kick an animal and to kick him to death is outrageos and cruel. This animal trusted him and in his own right should have turned on this man and killed him or mauled him. I wish he had

Not only should this officer spend time in jail, he should also reimburse taxpayers for the expense of that highly trained animal. What a waste of our (the taxpayer)resources.
