Dec 7 - Dec 18 2009

Set a science-based emissions target now

Target:
US President Barack Obama
Sponsored by:
The growth of global greenhouse emissions must be halted by 2015 and start declining rapidly thereafter.  Industrialized countries must adhere to an emissions reduction obligation of at least 40% below 1990 levels before the year 2020.  Concurrently, a funding mechanism must be developed to end gross deforestation and associated emissions in all developing countries.

We, the undersigned, demand that prior to attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December, you set a national emissions target that is science-based and legally binding.

The United States is historically the major greenhouse gas polluter and as such must take a leadership position in turning this situation around.

In our household we've already reduced the use of plastic bags. We're recycling cans and paper and we're using less detergents or we use alternatives. Mind you, this is not easy, living in a city like Jakarta where you get buried in plastic and chemicals and where people mindlessly throw their garbage in the rivers or on the streets.

Let's not forget that dams/reservoirs are the single largest source of human caused methane gas emissions.....even more than livestock.....methane is 25-72 time as powerful as CO2 in causing global warming...many countries such as India, Turkey and many other countries around the world are now engaged in a frenzy of dam building on major river systems claiming dams are a "green" source of electricity when in fact they are not green and one of the most environmentally destructive methods of electricity generation on earth, devastating river ecosystems, drying up rivers, killing fish and creating stagnant water which increases malaria and parasites. Many people who are displaced by dam building are not compensated and have to give up their way of life when the river eco-systems they depend on are destroyed....millions of people worldwide have been and are now being affected by the worldwide frenzy of dam building as nations choose river ecosystem destruction through dams as a method of generating electricity. Many large dams worldwide have been proven through recent scientific study to emit more greenhouse gases than coal fired power plants which are known to be one of....if not the dirtiest method of electricity generation on earth. Cold river water cools oceans, lakes and seas....dams/reservoirs destroy this cooling effect as they hold, warm and create stagnant water...in some parts of the world rivers no longer reach seas/lakes/oceans because so much water is held back and diverted by dams for electricity generation, irrigation and industrial use. Surely this destroys ocean/lake/sea life which has evolved for millions of years to live within certain water temperature ranges which are disrupted by dam building/obstruction of cold water flows. In tropical areas massive areas of tropical forest, plant and animal life are often destroyed by the flooding created behind dams. Now that alternative cleaner methods of electricity generation are being developed such as wind, solar, geothermal and natural gas we need to stop this frenzy of worldwide dam building and save and restore the worlds river ecosystems. Setting an emissions target will show the world that the US cares about the living conditions of future generations. We need to use the resourses we have for energy wisely. Please stop the destruction of the air and water that every creature needs to survive.

It's vital not to miss the opportunity of Copenhagen, thereby completely letting down the planet and its inhabitants. I'd put it as strongly as that.

I am on my way to energy independence from the SCE&G utility company by installing LAST WEEK a solar hot water heater;this week a Reverse Cycle Chiller for heat&air; I compost&recycle;I plant trees;I eat meat once a week. What is the US govt doing to bring down its carbon footprint? Solar & wind, NOT nuclear, NOT coal.

It is astounding to me how the President of the United States can possibly not attend the copehagaen conference with a strong plan and comment when the very life of our planet is at stake. Other countries are more responsible with this issue then the United States. I believe it our corporate /government profit motives over the live of the world. How very sad for all of us.

Is this all about the income from industrialists? Don't you realize what the lack of measures taken to reduce the GHG is doing to the entire globe, including the U.S.? You've seen it in your own country: the New Orleans disasterous flooding, all the hurricanes reaching your coasts, and a long etc. This is also happening all over the world. THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING and everyone has to do something to stop this on time! What is wrong with you?

I sacrifice by recycling and reusing not only grocery bags but containers that can be reused in the kitchen. I recycle all plastic covering that can be recycled with plastic bags. While living a major city such as Phoenix in my 20's, I did not drive a car. I biked and used mass transit, even in the summer. Driving a car is a luxury. If people in our country can learn that less can sometimes be more, we'll all be alot healthier and will have a cleaner country and have less debt, too!

I have not driven for several years for three reasons. The first is Iraq. Please do not tell me Iraq was ever about anything but Middle Eastern oil. The second is Afghanistan. Please do not tell me Afghanistan is about anything but Central Asian oil. The third reason I have not driven for several years is climate change. Please do not tell me human activity is irrelevant to that sort of change. It is change we do not need.

The developed nations have to take a stand for lowering the greenhouse emissions, and develop a sustainable economy ,it is an ethical duty, to make a paradigm shift.and the time is NOW. It is not possible to ensure an infinite economical growth in a planet that lives from finite resources, we must go into developing and use preferently clean energy sources , and the US has to lead the way.

Mr President..you promised change. Now is the time for you and your government to make a serious commitment to KyotoPlus to reduce global warming by 40%. The USA is a major polluter and must become a leader for climate change. Global warming is the greatest threat to life on earth. Entire populations and ecosystems are threatened by devastating impacts such as drought, heat waves, fires, floods, storms and rising sea levels. Scientists have warned the United Nations that only urgent action can avert uncontrollable, runaway climate change. Today, more than ever before, we know that we do not have to make a choice between the environment and the economy. The successful economies of the future are green economies, ones that reshape and refocus policies, investments and spending to deliver better results for the environment and the economy. Green solutions will create thousands of jobs and build a strong economy. I have great concern about the sustainability of our planet and what kind of legacy we are leaving our children and their children if we continue to rape and pollute Mother Earth at this rate. We must be good stewards of our land and its precious resources, and active participation in attempts to solve environmental pollution is critical. So time is now running out for your government to do the right thing about climate change. Once we destroy the environment we destroy the human race, because we can't eat or breathe money! To preserve our environment and ensure a livable world for our children, all politicians must support the KYOTOplus goals in Copenhagen next month!
