Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields, Central Park, New York City

Bring the music of John Lennon back to Strawberry Fields

Target:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Central Park Conservancy, Ms. Yoko Ono

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

One recent Sunday afternoon in June, musicians were issued a summons for playing music at Strawberry Fields, Central Park, New York City.

This was not the first time it happened.  On several other occasions, musicians were fined for playing the music of John Lennon and The Beatles, while visitors from all over the world were listening and enjoying the music at Strawberry Fields, the place dedicated to John Lennon, one of the greatest musicians of our time.

The fines range from $50 to $200, which is a heavy burden for most musicians, and an unreasonable penalty for persons who are only playing music, not committing crimes.

We understand that the Central Park Conservancy, NYC Parks Dept. and NYPD are just doing their jobs. Strawberry Fields is currently designated as "Quiet Zone" where musical instruments are prohibited, along with radios, running, rollerblading, and bike riding.

We feel that playing music at Strawberry Fields during reasonable hours, at reasonable volume, is not only harmless, but actually spreads love and joy among people.  The "Imagine" mosaic is one of the top tourist attractions in NYC.  Whether they are visitors just strolling through Central Park or John Lennon fans from around the world making a pilgrimage to Strawberry Fields, people have been touched by the music at Strawberry Fields.  Visitors listen, sing along, their children dancing at their feet, and it becomes a very special part of their visit to New York City.

We are asking Mayor Bloomberg, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Central Conservancy and Ms. Yoko Ono:  Please allow the music of John Lennon & The Beatles at Strawberry Fields during reasonable hours on the weekends by reconsidering the "Quiet Zone" rule and introducing a "Quiet Zone Time".

If you feel the same way, please sign the petition. Please tell your family and friends about this petition.  People throughout the United States and around the world can sign our online petition here at The Petition Site.

Love and Peace,

Musicians and Friends who love John Lennon & The Beatles

The whole point of Strawberry Fields is not just to memorialize John Lennon but to keep his spirit and that of the Beatles alive, and the best way to do that is not through candles and silent vigils but through singing and music. Reasonable limits on amplification are fine, but I was there on Dec. 8, 2009, at 11 pm and there were still hundreds of people, lots of music and singing going on but it wasn't audible across CPW. This is the kind of thing that makes this city wonderful and special. It should be encouraged, not the subject of law enforcement.

Mr Mayor, Please do what you can to change the law not allowing beatles music in Strawberry Feilds. They are just trying to pass along the love and peace that the Beatles were about. Please help them to pass along the joy with there music.

The music at Strawberry Fields enhances the experience of being in this part of the park. No one ever complains. Please do not ban the music. John Lennon I'm sure would have objected!

Strawberry Fields is a memorial site for one of the most famous musicians in the world, John Lennon. I believe he would be horrified to think that musicians are being fine for the exact thing he was famous for. Please appeal this silly Zone and use some common sense.

This is beaurcracy running amok. Something that John Lennon was against. To fine musicians for playing his music is ludicirous, and an insult to the vision that is Strawberry Fields. PLEASE reconsider the Quiet Zone.

Meeting and hearing(!) musicians from all over the world celebrating the music of John Lennon at Strawberry Fields in Central Park is a major attraction not only for me but for any music loving NYC-visitor. It is an overwhelming experience, I wouldn't like to miss whenever travelling to NYC. Strawberry Fields without music is like a guitar without strings or the stock-exchange without shares.

Music should definitely be allowed in Strawberry Fields! I haven't been there but I'm a big Lennon and music fan, and I know I'm talking on behalf of many music fans when I say that music being played there would only add to my enjoyment if I were ever to go to Strawberry Fields. Also The Beatles' music speaks of love and peace, there's never enough of these things in the world!

Yes, I've been to Strawberry Fields. Unlike the song where "nothing is real"-- there is very much a real musical tribute to the man who inspired the location. Mr. Mayor, surely you have bigger fish to fry than the musicians who provide a free and appropriate soundtrack for that part of the city.

I've been in NYC for two months now and it's my favorite weekend activity to go to Strawberry Fields. John Lennon died before I was born so to hear musicians play his brilliant songs at Strawberry Fields is like the only living memory of him for me. I'm sure he would appreciate it. If theres one place in earth where his sound should be heard, its Strawberry Fields, Central Park.

New York City is a magical place because of the talented musicians who help bring to life the places we dedicate to artists who have inspired us. What better tribute to John Lennon could there be than to have live music at Strawberry Fields? This is why people come to New York. This is what makes New York great. Let the Meetles play. Let talented musicians play. Thom Manno inspired this letter. Please read it. Help keep the artistic and inclusive spirit of New York alive.

Music at Strawberry Fields in Central Park should be cherished in a city like New York. The Meetles are a brilliant group of musicians who keep The memory of John Lennon alive & the Music of The Beatles in our lives, LIVE! Please consider the reputation of NYC as a Center for the Performing Arts and how important this aspect of our Culture is for our national reputation. In Memory of Thom Manno, Musician, Composer, Performer, extrordinaire.

New York needs this event because it makes people happy. Happier people, residents or not, are more likely to spend their money in New York, and less likely to commit crimes in New York. Seems like a no brainer to let the sing alongs continue. I intend to attend in memory of my cousin Thom Manno who always participated.

I am sigining this petition in memory of my son Thom Manno (1968-2009) who performed at Strawberry Fields for at least the past 15 years. Thom led sing-alongs, played with "The Meetles" for many years and spread joy and love through his amazing guitar playing and singing. He knew every Beetle tune ever written and could play practically all of the difficult guitar solos on the Beetles records. Thousands of visitors to New York heard him perform here and in other venues in NYC.

Last Sunday- October 25, 2009, I, and a friend from Tennessee visited Strawberry Fields. David keenly wanted to walk in Central Park. An American and a life long Beatles Fan, loved listening to a group jamming Beatles songs in twilight, right into the night...but they were set in a corner by Central Park West- on a road by passing vehicles...yet there were complete strangers of all hues and countries represented there, and some would step up on to the 'side walk', yet, similingly were handed a mike and welcomed to join in... If one New York Administration have dedicated 3.5 Acres of Central Park, and $1million of Yoko Ono to honor John Lennon, extending to like minded peoples' desire of One World- and World's People can 'Imagine there's no countries; Imagine all the people, Sharing all the world...;Imagine there's no heaven; No hell below us; Above us only sky; Nothing to kill or die for; And no religion too... A part of World's Central Park and its very Imagine Mosaic traveled all the way from Naples in Italy- By the enchantment of One Person for singing Love for ALL- Why should NYC not spread Free Will? Perhaps One Day You too, may say that I'm a dreamer; But I'm and will not be the only one; And I hope Someday (soon) you'll join us... Like the very Statute of Liberty. America has come to represent world's desires of Liberty and Freedom. Like America's and World's Peoples therein, who came and still come from all over the World to now a Nation, which was once without Boundaries. Let the desires of Peoples enchant you; to Enjoy and Share and spread Love - the very reason Strawberry Fields was Created for. It is not hard to Imagine, if you try...

I visited Strawberry Fields just last weekend, and there were musicians playing Beatles songs, even though they knew that they might be arrested at any time. It was a very inspirational time for me, as I grew up with the Beatles, and knew every song! Singing Beatles songs should never be a crime, especially there. Thanks!

I am a local musician, who has gone to Strawberry Fields on several occasions to listen to and play the music of the Beatles. It's ridiculous that this area of Central Park would be considered a "quiet zone" and outrageous that musicians would be issued fines for playing music here. Michael Bloomberg, please grow a heart and allow this music to be sung freely!
