February 14 marked the 10th anniversary of the arrival at Guantanamo of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the prison. On that day, his family and his lawyers in London launched an e-petition on the British government's website (http://www.freeshaker.com/), entitled, "Return Shaker Aamer to the UK," in which they called on the government to "undertake urgent new initiatives to achieve the immediate transfer of Shaker Aamer to the UK from continuing indefinite detention in Guantanamo Bay."
The e-petition can only be signed by British citizens and residents (including children as well as adults), but there is clearly international interest in securing the release of Shaker Aamer, and bringing to an end his long and unjust imprisonment at Guantanamo. As a result, this Care 2 petition has been established to provide anyone anywhere in the world with an opportunity to ask the US government to release Shaker Aamer, and to ask the British government to keep pushing to secure his freedom.
Shaker Aamer's ongoing detention is both inexplicable and unjustifiable, because the Bush administration cleared him for release from Guantanamo in 2007, the Obama administration reportedly cleared him for release from Guantanamo in 2010, and the British government has been asking for his release for the last five years.
Please sign this petition to simultaneously put pressure on both the US and UK governments to secure the release from Guantanamo of Shaker Aamer, and his safe return to his British wife and his four British children in the UK.
