Dear Mayor Chavez and Police Chief Schultz,

We the undersigned encourage you to take advantage of this no-cost opportunity to move the city another step closer to the goal of making Albuquerque a truly cycling friendly city.  Putting a "Share the Road" bumper sticker on all official city vehicles (including buses) and marked police cars will dramatically increase the visibility of this message and let motorists know that the city is serious about this issue.

Thank you for taking an interest in the safety of cyclists in the past and continuing to do so in the future.

Direct street cleaners to concentrate on roads with bike paths. Paths are very often covered in broken glass, loose sand and other debris.

As the Safety and Environment Officer for our government laboratory, I strongly support bicycle awareness. A bike-friendly ABQ is a cleaner and greener city for everyone, but this will happen only if we can make cycling safer. This initiative is something you can do for free: let's try it.

Time to make the streets safer for bicyclists.

Let's see more safe trails that are better connected and better maintained!

Bumper stickers to increase awareness of bicyclists to promote safety is a relatively simple thing to do, but which has impact. Please adopt this initiative. Thank you.

The only good thing about higher gas prices is that more people are getting serious about riding a cycle.

I am thankful for the wonderful network of dedicated bike paths, and look forward to more mileage being added to the network.

The manner in which the city deals with the issues affecting alternative means of transportation is increasingly important as time goes on.

Thank you for helping bring Albuquerque's traffic problems under control through the use of alternative transportation methods. The solution brings both financial and health benefits to those of us who choose to live here.

Adding these stickers to city vehicles & buses would increase safety awareness for the greenest transportation method the city is currently advocating. Please consider adding these free stickers to the city's vehicles and reflect the city's desire that all Albuquerque citizens remain safe!

Anything to increase awareness amongst motor vehicles that bicycles deserve their share of the road is a good thing. Bicyclists vote and pay taxes for road repair and maintenance, even though we generally have to ride on the margins. It would be great if that changed!

I would like to see a regularly scheduled cleaning of ABQ's bike routes by the city street sweepers. I can't count the number of rocks and sandbars that I have to navigate each day, as well as glass bottles, shopping carts, clothes, tumbleweeds ... and on and on.

Allowing "Share the Road" bumper stickers on city vehicles will help remind/educate drivers about cycling-friendly courtesy. Please allow it!

I believe it's very important to educate the public about the rights of cyclists on the road. Many motorists just don't know that bicycles have rights, just like automobiles. The Share the Road campaign can help educate Abq motorists.

i don't see why city of burque is willing to add bike lanes and not display alternative transportation, share the road stickers on city vehicles. i'm tired of people shouting get out of the road and back on the sidewalk while in a designated bike lane. time for the city to grow a pair and start educating the public at large, having a lot of bike lanes does not a bike friendly city make.

i think the continued improvement of independant bike routes developed along diversion channels and secondary runoff ditches is a great way to improve and use pre-existing infra structure to serve multiple purposes.maybe we could even complete a couple already started, like the paseo underpass. we blew it for the 4th of july maybe we'll make it in time for balloon fiesta. that's a truelly proactive , safe way to move people through that corridor

A timely idea. This culture of sharing the road must be positively communicated. It is a shared responsibility... but for cyclists the risks are much, much higher!

I have been a bicycle commuter in Albuquerque for nearly 17 years as well as a serious recreational rider. Educating motorists - and new cyclists - about bicycle safety on the road is important for all of us. I would be thrilled to see the city take this step - it communicates to the public at large that APD and the city of Albuquerque take the safety of all cyclists seriously.

Although it seems like a little thing, raising the awareness of drivers that bicycles are legitimate vehicles that belong on the road rather than the sidewalk is a good thing for bicyclists and drivers as well.

It would be great to somehow encourage motorists to "look both ways" before making right-hand turns onto Tramway when the light is red. Many don't even realize that pedestrians and cyclists have the right of way - the light is green for us southbound bike path users but we can't cross because an oblivious motorist is looking the other way, sometimes physically blocking the intersection.

Bike riding helps keep the bike riders healthy and reduces carbon emissions. It would be good for our society to encourage more bike riding. Safe riding conditions help.

# 271:

Wow, this is a great idea. It could really help raise awareness and keep me and others safe.

Let's finish connecting all of the bike routes and bike paths in Albuquerque. What we have currently is a great start, but I do a lot of errands by bike, and often I can't quite get to where I need to go. Also it would be great to get rid of (or at least stop adding) "right turn only" lanes - the ones on Tramway just north of Central have been a disaster and have become the most dangerous section of my daily bicycle commute to work.

Car drivers do not pay enough attention to cyclists and pedestrians. The cell phone or rushing to some place are more important.

Aggressive drivers who threaten cyclists must be cited. Maybe their cars should be impounded for a month & they should be forced to ride a bike for that time.

Greater emphasis should be made to "connect" bike paths and city bus connections. At the present, many city bus stops where cyclists could connect are totally unsafe--dark and without any means of emergency calling.

Mr. Mayor - I sincerely hope that you'll agree to have these bumper stickers posted on all city vehicles. Seems to me you have already stated your feelings in favor of reducing traffic congestion and gas consumption by supporting safe bicycle commuting, which also promotes exercise in our increasingly overweight society.

I ride in and around Albuquerque on a regular basis and there should be more awareness about bicycles sharing the road.

Please keep broken glass cleaned up on the city bike trails

Albuquerque ranks high in so many negative categories that we should want to do this as a sign of support for healthy lifestyles. We can show the rest of the country that we not only have the weather and attitude that supports biking at time when health and energy are critical, we have the community that supports it as well.

I appreciate the good work the City has done to improve cycling infrastructure and awareness. I think that things that help bicycle riders generally also improve quality of life for all citizens by. Thank you for considering this campaign. If motorists see these bumper stickers on individual cars then maybe they interpret it as another special interest group clamoring for attention, but if they see it on city vehicles maybe they will recognize the leadership as a good thing. I think it might also encourage people who want to ride but might be too wary of threatening motorists.

Mayor Chavez and Chief Shultz: Placing these bumper stickers on city vehicles is a great way of showing the City truly supports vehicles sharing the road with cyclists, and provides additional awareness to all who live and or pass through Albuquerque.
