People are noticing Canada's image not shining as it once was but then again from a First Nation's point of view it's just another day.

We would like to see Canada begin to provide programs aimed specifically for First Nation individuals that are on Social Assistance who have the skills, talent, knowledge and experience to run a business.

This type of program would actually provide seed money for individuals to start a business.  Individuals would not be required to first seek and secure additional funding sources such as securing commercial loans in addition to providing personal equity since this is an unrealistic criteria for any First Nation individual who is a recipient of Social Assistance.

Statistics Canada has shown that two-thirds of the businesses surveyed operated under a sole proprietorship structure, and over half stated that they operated in a highly competitive industry.  Aboriginal business owners in primary industries were the most likely to hire Aboriginal people, with 7 out of 10 reporting one or more Aboriginal employee. Overall, over one-third (35%) of Aboriginal businesses had at least one full-time employee.

In addition, over half of new Canadian businesses that fail do so in the first two years.  Approximately two-thirds (68%) of BC%u2019s Aboriginal businesses surveyed had been in operation for more than five years. In 2002, most Aboriginal business owners reported profits and expected their business to grow during the next two years, according to a new survey.  Most Aboriginal business owners (80%) indicated that they needed less than $50,000 to start their businesses and (34%) needed less than $5,000.

We ask that programs be implemented to assist qualified First Nation entrepreneurs who are on Social Assistance in accessing capital to start their business.

It is about time. I will be sure to let my mother Inlaw read this and to see how her people are doing now , the only thing that bothers me is she wont remember due to a stroke.

Well, it's a start. Maybe one day the people of the First Nations will get their land back from the pastoral companies, agricultural companies and mining companies - along with all the profits that those companies got by exploiting the people, land and other natural resources of the First Nations. Maybe one day they will regain their sovereignty and be treated as equals by the invaders.
