Despite the challenges the 2008-2009 hockey season presented the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, Captain Dan Smith was on the ice every night, fighting for his team's life. He sacrificed his body and his health and gave everything he had to his team. Now, one season later, Mr. Smith has been left out in the cold. He has no job and no prospects. He has a family that was well-loved when Mr. Smith was with Syracuse. His wife recently gave birth to another child. He deserves a respectful job with the Blue Jackets and/or Syracuse Crunch organization. If you believe that, please sign this petition in support of Mr. Smith.

We the undersigned believe that Mr. Dan Smith will bring an incredible amount of experience, dedication, and skill to the 2009-2010 Syracuse Crunch (AHL). We saw the sacrifices Mr. Smith made for his team every night for the last two years and we appreciate the level of talent he has. We believe signing Mr. Smith is an essential part of the success of the 09-10 Crunch and we want him back on the team. He deserves more from the city of Syracuse and from the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. He deserves recognition. He deserves a deal.

Thank you very much for your time.

From the looks of it the Crunch still needs his grit and his leadership. Bring Dan back!

It is understandable that perhaps there isn't roster room for Dan Smith given the pressures from Columbus to keep giving fourth, fifth, and sixth chances to very disappointing players they still have under contract (such as Plekanhov), and also that perhaps various rules about eligibility make it difficult to dress him every night given the other players in the system. However, now is the time to recognize the contributions not only that he has made but that he can still make to the club as a leader, and amongst the Crunch community. It is time to take that rare step that we have taken in the past once or twice with players not to be signed by the Columbus system, but whom can make a crucial daily contribution in Syracuse: sign Dan Smith to a position directly with the Crunch. Preferrably with an on-ice component, but if that is completely preclusive, offer him a position in our organization.

Dan Smith diserves a job because he is an amazing captain &always uses his body to block shots, and gives everything he has every night! Zenon Konopka was one of a kind and you can't replace someone like him. However if there was anyone that could Smith was the one and he did a great job as Crunch Caption! HE DISERVES A JOB !!!!!

Dan Smith should play! hes AWESOME! He has always been my Aunts and my favorite player on the Crunch! We go to almost all home games with my cousins and when Dan Smith skates by the yell "THERES DAN SMITH! THERES DAN SMITH! GO DAN SMITH!!!!!" He has the right to play!

DAN SMITH WAS THE HARDEST SKATER, THE HARDEST WORKER AND MOST DEPENDABLE, UNSELFISH PLAYER ON DEFENSE LAST YEAR. HE SAVED OUR BACON ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS BLOCKING SHOTS OR SKATING TO REDIRECT THE PUCK AWAY FROM OUR GOAL AS IT WAS GOING IN. WE WANT DAN SMITH!!!

I absolutely loved the Crunch and at the end of last season made a deposit on 3 season tickets. I have decided since Columbus and Mr. Dolgon do not respect the fans or the money we contribute,by not signing Dan Smith, that I am giving up those 3 season tickets. I want my moneys worth and I feel ripped off. He is not only the captain of the team but a personable, awesome player that pretty much kills any power plays while on the ice and has blocked many goals which would have been scored. Besides what example am I setting for my 5 year old? Work hard, give it your all and you will be cut? This man I am quite sure never left a game without some type of new bruise and should have been resigned way before Jon Mirasty who cannot play hockey, but is just the Crunch poster boy. Maybe I will spend my money in Rochester, go Mike York!

Dan Smith is a prime example of a TEAM player that gives his all during every game. He is also a great role model for the Crunch players and the team as well both on and off the ice. it would be a shame to loose him.

This is a travesty of the seriousness of Crunch hockey and how the Crunch are viewed by the Spewjackets. OK let's not have a dependable, class guy in the locker room to mentor our young defense corps. McFarland, you have truly showed your ignorance and ineffectiveness in handling an AHL franchise.

Syracuse has always been a blue collar town, with a rollup your sleeves, and get the job done attitude. Dan personified this by showing up every night with his lunchbox, and giving 110% for his team and their fans. Dan is not only an accomplished hockey player on the ice, he's a hell of a class act off. It's not to late Columbus!.

Your Nuts to think guys like Holden and Plekhanov can mature into better players without guys like Dan Smith. Very simple solution to the d-men issue.. Bring back Dan Smith.. His Salary shouldn't be an issue, $ 125,000 is nothing in relation to what your paying the rest of the team..

Mr Mcfarland, you need to realize your credibility is dropping fast with Crunch fans. Care or not its true, as last last year ended, and all this summer your showing you really dont give a dam about your minor league affiliate. Dan Smith would be a great asset for the defense!

I truly feel that Dan Smith has every right to be on the crunch line-up hell without him, it's just ridiculous to NOT have him. His experience and grit was such an asset to the crunch team, you ask the younger teamates on how his training helped them to make goals and block shots! We have seen him block shots to hard that he could barely get up off the ice, but he did it and gave 180%. You don't get that from some of the other players! Bring Dan Smith back please consider his contract again, let him help coach the new upcoming players he deserves it! Oh did I also say what a gentleman he is and a class act!!!

Dan Smith deserves to be sitting on the bench beside the other players. He was and always will be a good leader. Half the opponent's goals that were deflected were because of him.

The difference between successful AHL teams and the ones that are only a threat every few years are guys like Smith. The Crunch have few veterans to lead the way for a good crop of young talent, and nobody under contract leads by example the way Smith does. Sign the man up, get some stability on D and give our young D and goalies some confidence.

The Nick Lidstrom of the AHL and he doesn't have a job. How stupid can this league possibly get?
