SIGN LANGUAGE AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IN THE UK

Target:
UK government
Sponsored by:
This petition is to target Gordon Brown to ask that BSL (British Sign Language) be recognised as an official language in the UK along with English, Welsh, Irish, Ulster Scots, Scots, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish.

The profile of BSL should be raised, because they cannot learn to speak English, so we must reach out to them and learn sign. I was never offered it as a subject in school, but feel I should have been. This is the first step towards making BSL more widely known to get it recognised as an official language.

I not only believe that BSL should be recognised as an official language, but that it should actively be taught in schools. This could so easily be an inclusive rather than exclusive languge. It is increasingly common for babies to be taught sign language. Currently, this enables children like my own daughter (14 months old) to communicate thoughts & ideas effectively before they are able to talk, but how much better it would be for all concerned, if hearing babies & children were able to communicate easily with deaf children. Children are like sponges, they absorb so easily vast amounts of information & this could make such a positive difference to the next generation growing up. The knock on effect would be that the parents would also gain a knowledge of BSL!

some people can't speak, they just can't... who are we to think not of them? sign language is very important in the sense that the deaf could communicate better!

I do not want my parents to suffer! It seems like we are in a constant state of fear about how to care for ourselves!

Sign language should be taught in school. It would he a lot more handy than half of the useless junk we are forced to memorize.

Sign language is very, very important because sign language really help deaf people understand clear. Without sign lanugage then deaf people can't understand what teacher says? Always misunderstand without sign languange. Very, very important sign language to help deaf people understand clear and very happy. Please. God made sign language for deaf people. That bible said `Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the LORD (Leviticus 19:14)

Why not teach children in your schools to open up the door, so the hearing impaired can finally feel they are on par with us. In my childs school they teach them sign language, especially the letters. It is a language, just with no sound.
