Save Lives: Bring Silver Alerts to New York State

Target:
New York State Senate and Assembly
Sponsored by:

A Bill pending before the New York Senate and Assembly would assist families caring for loved ones, who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, with the creation of a Silver Alert program for missing seniors, similar to amber alerts for missing children.

Nine States now have Silver Alert programs.  Please sign, and help convince New York lawmakers to join those other states, and pass their bill into law.

We the Undersigned petition the members of the New York State Legislature (Senate and Assembly) to pass legislation, Senate Bill S7585-B and Assembly Bill A 10265-A, The "Omnibus Alzheimer's Services Act of 2008.

According to the Bill, now in committee, over  330,000  New  York  citizens  are  diagnosed  with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and that one in eight citizens over the age of sixty-five and half of those over the age of eighty-five are affected by these diseases.  Over 70 percent of those diagnosed are cared for at home, by family members.

A common behavior of this disease is wandering, and several recent incidents in which New York State involving New York State citizens diagnosed with the disease have wondered away from their family caretakers, and the police, publich health agencies, and other appropriate state agencies have been unable to help in a timely fashion.

The "Omnibus Alzheimer's Services Act of 2008" would both provide training to police personnel, and allow for the creation of a "silver alert" program, to help quickly locate cognitively impaired citizens who have been reported as missing, through reporting to appropriate state agencies, and to radio and other broadcast media.

We support this Bill, and ask that members of the New York State Senate and Assembly vote for it, and pass it into law.

Thanks to all who sign, and help to make the difference in the lives of people suffering with Alzheimer's Disease, and the lives of the people who care for them. This can be the difference between a life lost or just a few hours. I think that this Act would be beneficial for those affected by Alzheimer's as well as their families. Having seen the impact of this disease on a former pastor at our church, this petition is greatly needed and should be enacted across the country. This Bill should be enacted across the country. It would potentially make a dent in New York's international reputation were this to be blocked. This makes so much sense to me, not sure why it isn't already working in all 50 states. The populaton of senior citizens and the incidence of Alzheimer's disease are both rising, I implore you to support this bill to protect our loved ones who suffer from this disease. Please sign this bill.I support California enact a service to locate missing adults with cognitive impairment/dependent adults. Currently, EIGHT States have THE SILVER ALERT PROGRAM. As a former Administrator of an Assisted Living Facility, I am very happy to sign this petition. Aleasha Casaretto, Student All people need this. a child of a parent with AD, I fully support this bill, but hope I or my family does not need to use it. As I get older I often worry what will happen to me if I ever get Alzheimer's.

As I get older I often worry what will happen to me if I ever get Alzheimer's. Here in Canada I am not aware of whether or not we have a Silver Alert Program, but I think everyone should sign this as this is very important for the elderly.

All people need this. I've worked as a CNA for Alzheimer's patients and they can get so bad that they don't know what they are doing. They become just like newborn babies that don't even know how to speak, eat or move body parts. They also know when this starts happening to them and it can be very painful mentally for them. Someone can get hurt or killed. We also need to look into the new therapy that Canada has stumbled on that seems to bring the memory back through electrical wave treatments. They where using this treatment on an obese person who started to clearly remember his childhood as if it was yesterday! Alzheimer's and their families need all the help they can get... This is the "Baby Boomer's Golden Years".

I support California enact a service to locate missing adults with cognitive impairment/dependent adults. Currently, EIGHT States have THE SILVER ALERT PROGRAM. They report the program is being successful in locating individual adults that have wondered from their place residence. The first 24 hours are CRUCIAL. Please support this program by signing in on the petition. Qualifications: Must be a Registered Voter!

The populaton of senior citizens and the incidence of Alzheimer's disease are both rising, I implore you to support this bill to protect our loved ones who suffer from this disease. We cannot stand idly by as more and more of our parents, grandparents, uncles, etc. and other loved ones who suffer from this disease are being found injured or dead because action was not taken to find them in time.

This Bill should be enacted across the country. The Amber Alert program is successful because of how quickly it can be implemented. A Silver Alert system would bring safety to cognitively impaired individuals, as well as comfort to those who love and care for them.
