Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban

Target:
City and County of Santa Cruz
Sponsored by:

We, the undersigned residents, respectfully request that the City and County of Santa Cruz support Assemby Bill 68, which would require a 25 cent fee on plastic and paper bags. We hope adoption of AB 68 will ultimately lead to a full single-use plastic bag ban in our community.

Single-use plastic bags represent one of the greatest environmental catastrophes of our time. It is estimated that 60-80% of all debris in the ocean is plastic. Plastics take hundreds of years to break down into smaller pieces and most types never truly biodegrade. As a result, marine animals often get entangled in the debris or mistake it for food.

Around 100 billion petroleum-based plastic checkout bags are used each year in the United States, requiring an estimated 12 million barrels of oil each year. A ban on plastic bags would help preserve the integrity of our local ecosystems, reduce the burden on landfills, and cut back litter within the city premises.

For these and other reasons, Save Our Shores and the undersigned residents support the adoption of AB 68 by the City and County of Santa Cruz. Such an ordinance is needed to prevent marine debris, save money, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Many other cities have taken similar action recently including San Francisco and Oakland which both recently passed ordinance bans on plastic bags.

There are many alternatives out there, such as reusable cloth bags, bags made from recycled products, bags made from starches, biodegradable polymer and other renewable resources. We thank all local representatives for their time on this and hope we can quickly and effectively establish this small change here in Santa Cruz.

Sincerely,

This is something we all can do. Does not need an advanced degree. I believe most people are not aware of this problem and what it will mean to our world. We need to get started on this right now. Thank you.

We can no longer pretend that using a plastic bag for each and every purchase is "free". It's easy, everyone can bring a bag when they go shopping. It's time to make this happen.

Please help this bill go through. Our sea life is suffering. People may take that extra thought when they are shopping and bring their own bags. Thank you for your efforts.

With the population increasing, more and more people are shopping and using plastic bags instead of paper, or even better reusable "green" bags. Most of these plastic bags end up in the garbage and littered in the streets. Everyday when I'm driving, I see dozens of these bags blowing through the streets. GET THESE BAGS OUT OF STORES AND OUR ENVIRONMENT!

I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled! We need to remove (eliminate) emissions not reduce emissions.. I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled! I’m sickened and disgusted! I’m revolted, repulsed, repelled, offended & appalled! Strengthen Climate Legislation!! Going Green does not mean you put on a Green Jacket and continue doing what your doing. IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE OR WE’RE ALL FU!@#$%D!! The Governments will go on continuing to allow the destruction of families; The Poisoning of people through Radio Active & Toxic Foods; Diseases, Products, and toxic pollution particles in the Water to drink and air to ingest when we breath, UNTIL WE SCREAM LOUD ENOUGH FOR THEM TO STOP PISSING ON US ALL WITH THEIR TOXIC CHEMICAL ADDICTIONS!! (The perfect receipt for Corporate & Government Profit)… DO NOT BUY PLASTIC - DO NOT POLLUTE!! Recycling all you can every week..

With all we know about the plague of plastic in our oceans, there should be absolutely NO excuse for continuing the manufacture and use of plastic bags.

I recently did a beach cleanup near my home and the number of plastic bags was atrocious. They are detrimental to the environment, and for what, a little convenience? Humankind needs to be proactive and stop elements of our culture which harm the environment. There are alternatives which biodegrade or better yet, use a reusable bag.

Using plastic bags for a one-time disposbale use does not make sense. Plastic is made to last for a long time. We need a change. I have heard of numerous other cities banning plastic bags. I am ashamed that we were not one of the first cities to do so. So lets do it now!

With the number of re-usable bag options available, there is no more use for these expensive, wasteful, and indulgent single use bags.

I am aware of the detrimental impact plastic bags and our convenience society has on our environment and I think we all have a responsibility to do what we can to mitigate that, I hope feel the same. Thank you.
