Several inmates in Pennsyvania have reported the high number of suicides and attempted suicides, and abuse of inmates by prison staff. Many phone calls, faxes, and letters have been written to Pennsylvania wardens and others, but nothing is being done.
This petition is to bring awareness to the high number of suicides, attempted suicides, inmate deaths, and mental and physical abuse of inmates, by prison staff in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Inmates have reported to family and friends that there has been abuse, both mentally and physically by prison staff. Inmates are held in isolation for long periods of time. There have been reports of guards spitting in inmates food. Lack of medical and psychological evaluations, sleep deprivation, and lack of nutritional food. This goes against the Constitution of America's 8th amendment which states: excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, Nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted.
There have been several attempted suicides, and several inmates deaths by suicides, and other causes. This number is extremely high. Inmates families have proof and documentation, and will be watching this matter closely.
We the undersigned feel this matter should be investigated before there are more inmate deaths. These are prisons in the USA and not Abu Ghraib prison in Bagdad. Prisoners are not in prison to be punished, prison time is punishment enough. We demand equal and just treatments in Pennsylvania prisons.
The citizens and taxpayers of Pennsylvania should not be paying for punishment and inhumane treatment and their tax dollars should go to the rehabilitation of inmates, to provide the safe return of prisoners into their communities.

Please this madness has to stop* Being locked up is the sentence and those that abuse helpless people who can not fight or escape need to be sent to prison for their crimes, asult, rape, mirder and abuse are all pinshisable crimes. Every state should be reported all ay one time and the amount of damages being paid to each state to the President: Hand deliversd by one of our advocates with all the letters of each state and officers committing these crimes. Trporting each state within their state does no good! They cover each other's backs* I am signing this because I truely believe people hired to work in these prisons should be fired & not beable to hide behind fellow workers backs. If not fired they should be locked up with the prisoners they are abusing* God Bless each one locked in these awful times* Bad cops are just that* Bad cops*

Something is wrong in a prison system when there are that many inmate deaths and suicides. Be aware that the world is watching you.

Private opinion in regard to deserts of an incarcerated individual is immaterial and outside of legal responsibility, end the practice of emotional, mental or physical abuse leading to this situation.

Inhumane conditions for inmates is unjust. We must collectively as a society to change this so the recidivism will drop and they can learn to become functioning members of society.

Although Britain's penal system is far more liberal than that of the USA and we have ony 38 prisoners sentenced to life without parole, we still have problems with excessive suicides in UK prisons. From reading the posts on the internet to the Patrick Crusade mailing list, I am aware that the prison sytem in the USA is truly barbaric. My support worker, Patrick Walker, cannot understand why prosecutors seem to sometimes be satisfied only with securing a conviction, rather than getting justice as required by your Constitution.

I can't imagine how I could go on if I had to live with this kind of injustice to a human being. Animals are treated better in the USA than prisoners. When I hear the stories of many families it breaks my heart and all of my prayers go out to the families. America should hang their heads in shame for the injustice and inhumane way they are treating our children.

There is enough abuse happening everywhere, it is time to stop it all! I can't understand why a system that calls itself, "Department of Corrections", can not see that they are only making things worse, and I see no correcting happening. When will these officials wake up? Soon I hope, as currently I see a DOC that is totally barbaric. Stop the abuse, and correct this nonesense, inmates are human beings too.

We should be ashamed of the conditions in our state prisons. To neglect to try to make a change would be an insult to fellow citizens.

Cruel and unusual punishment is unlawful. Institutions supported with public funds must be humane, effective and accountable to the public.

I believe the prison system should focus on rehabilitation and not continual punishment and abuse. These people have been punished by being isolated from society and will eventually be released back into the wider community. It does not serve any purpose to treat people like this... Inmates are humans two and should be treated as such. Every person has the right to be treated with dignity and to have their basic human rights honoured even when incarerated

This can happen to any of us. Never think you are immune because you consider yourself an honest, tax-paying citizen. Police need to solve crimes - it looks good! You may happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. You could be their next arrestee. Or, you may not have enough money to hire a competent attorney and will be offered a plea bargain. Once you are inside the system you become a number, not human anymore and not treated as one. If you are aware of this inhumanity and do nothing, you are part of the problem. The USA is the largest incarcerator in the world. We need to act NOW!!
