Stop Atrocities in Libyan Prisons

In Libya, former rebel groups are holding as many as 8,000 people in 60 detention centers, where the prisoners face torture, extrajudicial executions, and rape.

Humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders recently suspended its work in some Libyan prisons because torture is so rampant that some detainees were brought for care only to make them fit for further abuse. Widespread prisoner abuse has led to the deaths of several detainees.

As the National Transitional Council struggles to establish its authority after the deposition of Gadhafi, the transitional government needs help to take control of the prisons and rid them of human rights abuses.

Act now to call on the U.N. Security Council to assist Libyan authorities in taking control of the detention centers immediately.
We the undersigned urge you to assist Libyan authorities in taking control of the sixty detention centers currently held by former rebel groups. As many as 8,000 prisoners face torture, rape, and extrajudicial executions, and widespread prisoner abuse has led to the deaths of several detainees.
As the National Transitional Council struggles to establish its authority, we call on you to help the transitional government take control of the prisons and rid them of human rights abuses.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
