An article in the Gibraltar Chronicle on Saturday 5th July reported on the Development & Planning Commission%u2019s granting outline planning permission to the building of six luxury villas by ABCO Ltd above Both Worlds.

The article states that the application notes that %u201Cthe Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS) has been consulted on the relocation and replanting of a number of animals and plants from the development site%u201D.  This gives the absolutely false impression that GONHS is collaborating with the developers or supports the development in some way.

GONHS is totally and absolutely opposed to the development and to the way that it has been processed.  It is the first time in decades that it is proposed to build on a green site.  Luxury villas will destroy the countryside feel of the area of Sandy Bay and replace it with yet another tunnel effect.  Despite the statements made in ABCO%u2019s application, environmental concerns have not been properly addressed by the developers and there are many serious safety issues which should have been resolved before outline planning permission was granted.  Many of the points are currently being pursued by GONHS through a number of avenues.

Meanwhile, GONHS calls on ABCO to withdraw its proposals and if, if it fails to do so, asks Government to intervene and halt the development in the interests of safety, the environment, and good practice.

TIMES ARE CHANGING, GIBRALTAR HAS TO CHANGE WITH TIME, BUT THE ROCK MUST REMAIN AS THE ROCK, AND NOT WHAT I NOW CALL "THE SMALL APPLE". ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! BASTA YA!

Such a pity if these plans go ahead and just to build more luxury apartments that most locals cannot even afford!

We need to help the birds to survive, especially now when the global warming is around. This is not going to make it any better for our little friends.

Having lived and worked in Gibraltar, I feel that the need is for affordable housing rather than luxury developments. I think it is important that the Ornithological Society is listened to. I realise that in such a constrained space there is has to be a balance between natural history and housing, but I think it is a waste to use the space for luxury villas at the expense of affordable housing, and migratory birds.

Very surprised to read that a greenfield site is even contemplated at Gibraltar, which I know well as a regular tourist.Gib is already massively overdeveloped, and cannot take any more. Please stop this bad idea.Ray Eades

Please protect Gibraltar's special character for future generations. Other locations can accommodate luxury flats (if they are needed - despite so many developments standing empty), but this special place is unique, and once damaged or destroyed, is lost to our children and grandchildren forever.

The project to build these villas is completely inappropriate given the effect it will have on biodiversity. Also the requirement in Gib would appear to be affordable housing and not luxury villas that are likely to be used as second homes.

All governments have a duty to balance the needs of industry with the imperative to safe-guard precious and irreplaceable resources for our and future generations. For too long the balance has been on the side of short-term financial interests. We must learn the many lessons of history and that of the current global financial crisis: hubris and greed are always destructive in the end. The Gibraltarian government needs to think this through and realise that this development is neither necessary nor important, but has a huge and entirely negative impact on the utterly unique natural environment of Gibraltar.

Quite apart from this project being an intrusion into our diminishing natural environment it will also be at risk from rockfalls.

The island has precious few sites for wildlife and cannot afford to lose them to this type of development.
