Arrogant middle aged white men in positions of eco destructive power MUST BE STOPPED. our future depends on this.

To the Premier Ted Baillieu,

We, the people of Victoria, Australia and those of us from overseas, ask that you immediately put a stop to the logging of areas of forest in Victoria that provide food, shelter and water to the highly endangered Leadbeater's Possum. The population of this faunal emblem is thought to have been halved by the Black Saturday fires and by continuing to log the habitat of this tiny marsupial, you are bringing it to the very edge of extinction.

There are currently thought to be less than 1000 Leadbeater's Possums in the wild (there are none in captivity). When the population of any species reaches such a tiny fraction of its pre-historic number, the species itself becomes highly vulnerable to any slight disturbance. By logging forest that surrounds its known habitat, you prevent the species from regenerating, as it needs hollow trees to nest. These hollows take more than 200 years to form, and the continued logging and burning of Leadbeater's habitat both destroys existing hollows and ensures that they will never form.

The logging of native forests in Victoria is an economic black hole, and widely unpopular both among the communities surrounding the logged areas (as has been seen by continued community support for the protection of these areas) as well as the wider community. The number of jobs that come out of the timber industry does not and cannot justify the millions of taxpayer dollars that are sunk into this industry every year. Furthermore, the interference with and loss of tourism and the permanent defacement of public land simply cannot continue.

Mr Baillieu, the time to act is now. Each and every species has a right to exist, and you have no moral or legal right to sign a warrant for its extinction. How can you put a price on such a beautiful and unique creature?

P.S. Before you leave, please spend 1 minute and invite 10 people to this event! Hopefully, if enough folks get involved - we can generate momentum, create some change...
