STOP CRUEL NICOTINE EXPERIMENTS ON MONKEYS AT OHSU
Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) experimenter Eliot Spindel has been killing infant monkeys (like Thimble, pictured here) in nicotine studies for 24 years. But that's not enough for him--Spindel has a ticket to ride the federally-funded gravy train and continue these needless experiments until 2012. Please Take Action to urge OHSU and National Institutes of Health (NIH) officials to end funding for Spindel's experiments, and to redirect tax dollars into useful efforts to help people stop smoking and to keep young people from ever starting.
Cruel is the only way to describe the actual experiments Spindel conducts on female monkeys who are impregnated and subjected to multiple surgeries to implant nicotine pumps in their backs. The monkeys endure multiple surgeries as the pumps must be changed up to five times during their pregnancies. Steady doses of nicotine are delivered to the pregnant monkeys and their babies are cut out of their wombs at various stages of development in order to dissect their lungs.
The letter ande the signatures will be sent to: Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. Director, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute nabele@nhlbi.nih.gov

Dear sir/madam, I am writing to urge you to end funding for the studies conducted by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) experimenter Eliot Spindel. Cruel is the only way to describe the actual experiments Spindel conducts on female monkeys who are impregnated and subjected to multiple surgeries to implant nicotine pumps in their backs. I urge you to cut off Spindel's funding, and redirect it into useful efforts to help people stop smoking and to prevent young people from ever starting. Sincerely.

STOP TORTURING INNOCENT BEINGS! WHY KEEP TESTING ON SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PROVEN DANGEROUS???
KILLING AND EXPLOITING IS NEITHER THE ANSWER NOR SCIENCE.

"Humans aren't the only species on earth, we just act like it"....why do humans think that we can abuse animals, especially with testing that we ALREADY know the results for??

I completely understand the use of animals in research. We have to do it because genetically they're the closest to our species. It makes me ponder how the human race would feel if we posed such experiments in university studies on human fetuses or pregnant women. However, the fact of the matter is OHSU is using infant monkeys and impregnated monkeys for research of NICOTINE! If a woman smokes during pregnancy, then there's going to be affects to the fetus. That's why the surgeon general puts it on the pack. Goodness people, we obviously don't care what the affects of our health is caused from smoking. People are going to do it no matter what. It's downright disgusting and very concerning that this college is FEDERALLY funded for these cruel experiments. What about "crack" babies? What's next? Getting funded to experiment on impregnated monkeys on the affects of crack. Get real people! The government needs to try to design experiments that are more humane and less dependent upon infant animals. Why not note all of the research provided from medical records of autopsies of people who have died of lung cancer or people that were smokers before they died. Or, better yet, their records from the health care they were provided with before dying? Can we not donate our bodies when deceased to medical research? Lastly, find the cure for cancer or AIDS rather than the affects of nicotine. Reading this article literally made me lose my lunch. More importantly, I lost respect for our government, our universities, our society, and our scientists for the cruel experiments that are completely unnecessary. Personally, I don't see this research as a "priority" just as stated in the article "redirect tax dollars into useful efforts to help people stop smoking and to keep young people from ever starting." SICK! SICK! SICK!!!!

The results of animal experiments can not be extrapolated correctly on humans. Vivisection is an outdated and unsafe method. There are more reliable alternatives. Nothing justifies cruelty.

The tests on animals are not relevant - all the scientific world knows this. Beside that, there's plain and pure cruelty to use living sentient beings to prove something already well known - that smoking during pregnancy is harming the baby.

We know the impact on nicotine to the health of human beings. Why do we need to keep testing it on animals to see their response to it? This is cruel, disgusting and has NO REASON to be done. STOP IT

this is uncalled for, i can't think of a single animal that has chosen to smoke in all of the history of this world, only people, so why not test on the ones that are actually using this stuff and STOP TORTURING INNOCENT ANIMALS YOU MONSTERS!!!!
