Stop Dantesque

This brutality happens every year in the Faroe Islands, which belongs to Denmark, a country supposedly civilized and a EUROPEAN UNION country. For many people this cruel practice is unknown. This bloody slaughter is just to show entering into adulthood! Its absolutely incredible that nobody dares to do something to prevent this barbarism that is committed against Calderon, an intelligent dolphin that has the peculiarity of approaching people out of sheer curiosity.  The traditional bloody whale and dolphin (and shark) slaughter takes place every year. The Faroe Islands are a part of Denmark, where whaling is banned, but they have laws that are independent of Denmark's laws, so they are allowed to continue with this mass execution. Year after year, thousands of pilot whales, beaked whales and dolphins are chased into the bay by boats, where they are slaughtered. Metal hooks are driven into the stranded mammals' blowholes before their spines are cut. The animals slowly bleed to death. Whole families are slaughtered, and some whales swim around in their family members' blood for hours. Whales and dolphins are highly intelligent creatures and feel pain and fear every bit as much as we do. The hunts are non-commercial and anyone in the island communities can join in at will. When a school of whales is spotted close to shore, messengers are dispatched to inform local inhabitants of the particular island involved. A formation of small boats is then used to drive the whales ashore, where they beach themselves in the shallow water and are killed by waiting islanders. Men gather on the shore to kill the beached whales. It is generally only Faroese men who take part in the killings while female islanders look on. They even let the children out of school so that they can frolic in the bloody water. The whale hunts have caused international outrage and have been roundly condemned as unnecessary and barbaric by conservation and animal rights groups around the world. Most Faroese maintain that it is their right to catch pilot whales given that they have done so for centuries. Faroese men often say that this killing makes them feel Faroese.  They also defend themselves by claiming that this practice provides food for their community.  However, far too many of these animals are left on the beach to rot. Their other defense is that these animals are not extinct. That is NOT the point. The problem is the WAY these animals are killed. This can NOT be allowed to continue in a modern, civilized world.

We, the undersigned, are ready to put a stop to Dantesque.  The citizens of Earth will no longer tolerate this barbaric and heinous coming of age ritual.  This is your chance to make this world a better place in which to live.  The fact that the Faroese people want to eat the meat of these animals is fine.  Where we have a problem is the way that these animals are slaughtered.  There is simply no need for the barbarism and cruelty that is shown to these animals.  It doesnt make good sense.  Because its fun is not excusable.  The Faroe Islands are a member of your organization.  I am addressing this letter to your attention on the recommendation of my Senator, Richard Shelby.  I know that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations can get something done about this and I fully expect you to.  You have a responsibility to all of us.   Thank you for your time.
