Monsieur le Président, la peine de mort n’a pas sa place dans un pays comme le votre, qui représente une des plus grandes puissances au monde et cela pour plusieurs raisons : elle est appliquée sur des personnes défavorisées qui ne peuvent se payer un bon avocat ; les avocats commis d’office ne traitent pas avec professionnalisme les dossiers de leur client ; elle est irréversible et des innocents sont exécutés où en attente de l’être ; c’est un traitement cruel, inhumain et dégradant ; elle va à l’encontre du droit à la vie proclamé dans la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme ; elle ne dissuade pas les criminels et les pays qui la pratique n’ont pas un taux de criminalité plus faible ; elle est une torture psychique et physique en obligeant un être humain à attendre qu’on le tue pendant des décennies ; des lois comme la loi des Parties qui abolit la distinction entre l'auteur principal d'un crime et la personne qui l’accompagne en stipulant qu'une personne est criminellement responsable d'un crime commis par la conduite d'un tiers condamne à mort des innocents. America is a mostly Christian nation - and with that comes a responsibility for us to preserve life not end it. Although the crimes of many on death row are despicable, our system is also very flawed as evidenced by the many men and women who are later found not guilty by new evidence. The Death Penalty is one that should not be allowed in any country. Who are we to decide who lives or who dies. If we execute a murder, are we not doing the same thing? Murdering a murder even in the so called name of "Justice". How many people could the U.S have put to death that were actually innocent people? How do we truly know whose innocent or guilty? The DP is cruel & unusual punishment as it is often years or tens of years before it is actually carried out. I think that it would be much more productive to put these inmates to work in programs that would benefit organizations such as guide dogs for the blind or pets as therapy dogs. Perhaps then these inmates may be able to contribute to society rather than being a financial drain on taxpayers. The DP not only punishes the felon, it punishes the innocent family & friends & causes them undue suffering. Please stop government sanctioned murder, as that is all it is.
