Stop Deer From Being Killed By Cars

  • by: Danielle Moore

Every year, an estimated 1.5 million deer are killed by collisions with cars. The expression "like a deer caught in the headlights" explains very well what happens to too many deer all the time. The deer only wish to cross the road to get to food, water, or shelter and cannot judge how fast the cars are going. The bright lights of the car's headlights also daze and confuse them, only adding to the problems.

Hitting a deer with your car averages out to $2,200 in damages. But the costs aren't just in the life of the deer and the money in your pocket. If the deer is hit hard and fast enough, the velocity of it can cause the deer to go airborn and through your windshield. The number of deer and other animal-related fatalities has more than doubled over the last 15 years. You run the chance of serious injury, or maybe even death, because of such an incident.

Please write any of your thoughts and comments down to go into a letter to Mr. Bradley, asking that some changes are made not only for our safety, but for the safety of millions of deer out there as well.

Dear Mr. Jim Bradley,

We, the undersigned, feel that something needs to, and must be done about the deer-related accidents that happen annually. Although no one can be rid of the problem completely, we are determined to lessen its effect on our environment.

Just like you, we are all drivers who go to work, run errands, and travel by automobile vehicles one time or another. And not only do we wish to help change many deer's fate for our sake and safety, but to feel less guilty than by being a bystander, doing nothing to assist what we know is the right thing to do.

By building roads farther away from the edge of forest clearings, or by building higher guard rails are two different ways that we can lessen our impact on the comfort and safety of millions of deer ontario-wide. It may also set a trend for other many provinces country-wide, and perhaps many countries world-wide. Remember, we are a species in the animal kingdom, just as deer are. Do we have the authority to more rights over them?

Please use your power as the Minister of Transportation to correct this issue. History repeats itself as noone was listening the first time. And it will continue to do so until we listen.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help meet our goals, and helping to change our futures for the better.

We are listening.
