The Deseret News has long maintained itself as a balanced, objective source of local and international news. Unfortunately, the Deseret News has recently deviated from this legacy by publishing very biased coverage of the Middle East by one Mark Paredes, with such coverage lacking any rebuttal by parties opposed to his extremist views. The purpose of this petition is to call on the Deseret News to take one or more of the following actions: 1. Terminate Mark Paredes's position as a contributor to the Deseret News, 2. Exercise greater editorial oversight of Paredes's writings and encourage him to adopt a more objective, news-worthy approach to the subject matter, 3. Provide adequate opportunities for parties opposed to his viewpoints to publish accounts/articles which can serve to counteract his unbalanced positions, 4. Explicitly designate Paredes's writings as opinion pieces and remove their "news" categorization. It is our hope that by taking one or more of the aforementioned actions, the Deseret News can eliminate this current source of bias in its news reporting and effectively restore the integrity of its journalistic objectivity.
