Driving under the influence is a problem across the United States. There are many DUI penelties in place that focus on curbing drunk drivers: jail time, fines, license suspension and more.
Alcohol related crashes are the leading cause of death for young Americans, between the ages of 16 and 24 years old.
The number of deaths  in 2008  was recorded at 11,773.
Repeat DUI offenders make up about a third of drunk driving arrests every year. Even though their licenses may be revoked, it is estimated that about 50-75% of these people will still drive even without a license.
What is an ignition interlock device? It is a mechanism that is installed in a vehicles dashboard. It works like a Breathalyzer, you breathe into the device and it measures your Breath Alcohol Content .
The Alcohol limits at which the device will allow you to drive vary from state to state, but are commonly .02% to .04%.
Most states only order someone to get an ignition interlock device if they have had previous DUI convition of .15% or higher, you refused to consent to a chemical alcohol test, or you caused injury while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Having a sober friend blow in the device to help you start the car will only backfire in the end.The interlock devices are often programmed to make you take the test again while you are driving later. This is to ensure no one enters a car sober and then begins drinking.
The ignition interlock device helps to reduce the number of subsequent offences by 50% to 90%, as compared to offenders who were not ordered to have the device installed.
There are currently 31 states that do not make ignition interlock devices mandatory. All states need to make this mandatory and it should be ALL DUI's not just the ones over .15% ,involve injury or refuse alcohol testing.

We the undersigned believe that ALL states should make the Ignition Interlock device mandatory.
Currently 31 states DO NOT make it mandatory.
The ones that do usually only make it mandatory if the person has been convicted of DUI and their blood alcohol level was .15% or higher, there was someone injured or if they refused to take an alcohol test.
We believe that ALL DUI convictions should be made to install the Ignition Interlock device no matter whether they had high alcohol levels, caused an injury or took the alcohol test.
The Ignition Interlock device helps to reduce the number of subsequent offences by 50% to 90% as compared to offenders who were NOT ordered to have the device installed.
Let's stop DUI by making the Ignition Interlock device mandatory in ALL states and save the lives of thousands of people that are killed each year because of Drunk Driving.
