Stop Field Burning Now

Stop Field Burning Now

Target:
Oregon County Commissioners and City Councilors
Sponsored by:
The undersigned urge you to act decisively to end field burning in the Willamette Valley.

The medical evidence is overwhelming -- fine particulates entrained in field burning smoke constitute an extreme danger to public health.  This smoke infiltrates our common airshed and penetrates deep into the lungs.  It causes acute and long-term health problems for vulnerable people -- including those with existing pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, the elderly, and young children.

Field burning was ended in Washington by executive action and in Idaho by court order.  Yet it continues in Oregon, because state officials here -- including the Environmental Quality Commission, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and the State Legislature -- refuse to act.

This is unacceptable.  We urge you to stand up for the health of residents in the Willamette Valley.

On behalf of the public health, seek a court order to stop field burning in Oregon.

There is no available method to protect individuals from inhaling the very fine particulates present in grass smoke. These microscopic particles readily penetrate buildings, which means taking refuge indoors does not guarantee protection. Indeed, it has been shown that air samples indoors may contain as much chemical particulate matter as is found outdoors in the same general area. American Lung Assoc, www.ala.org

We decided to Eugene from Michigan last year because of its location and its mild (compared to Michigan) weather. We were dismayed to learn, however, that the air quality is often poor here, and that a major contributing factor is field burning. We urge that this practice be stopped, for the sake of the health of residents.

I am an RN for 29 years and have seen the health impact of field burning on the public. It exacerbates pre-existing conditions such as asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions, cardiovascular conditions, the elderly and young children. Also, it affects people without pre-existing conditions who are in good health. The fine particulates entrained in field burning smoke triggers allergies and irritate the bronchioles. It is much more intense on the public than secondary cigarette smoke. Please end this toxic, dangerous, and archaic practice for everyone's health!

This archaic practice endangers everyone's health for the profit of a few, and it is long past time to ban it completely!

Please work to stop field burning. I have asthma and during field burning I often am unable to work or be outside, which certainly has a negative impact on my life. Beyond that, I have seen studies showing that the banning of field burning in other areas did not affect farmer's return--so I can see no good reason to continue this archaic practice.

When I was a classroom teacher in Junction City I taught in a windowless classroom. Each year when field burning began I would find black particles on my book shelves that had found their way through our ventilation system. One year, out of frustration, I wiped the shelves and books with a white rag, collected the larger pieces and showed the principal what we were breathing in my classroom. The district improved the ventilation system As an asthmatic I would have difficulties with my breathing as would some of the students. There has to be a better way that does not infringe on the health of people.

I have lived in and around Eugene for over 20 years. When visitors happen to show up during field burning time, they are horrified that such a practice is allowed! What a shameful example to set! You can smell the smoke and feel it when you inhale - and god forbid if you have respiratory problems! PLEASE FIND ALTERNATIVES TO BURNING THE FIELDS!!

It think field burning should have been stopped 20 years ago: I recall driving to the State Fair where I had an exhibit and being almost blinded by smoke even then.

How can we continue allowing a relative handful of people to have such a major negative impact on the health of a vast majority of Willamette Valley citizens. Ban all field burning for good. Thank you!

Why should we suffer the effects of an industry dumping waste products into the air? Time to develop innovative alternative strategies, as California's Sacramento valley has already.

You can hardly go anywhere around the north Willamette valley from fall through spring without having to breathe smoke from fields, backyard burns, logging debris, and fireplace fires.I'd love to be able to go walking in the country (or my back yard) and breathe clear air.

Field-burning is the sort of public health hazard one would expect to find only in an unregulated Third World country.
