WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? Anyone with pet fish, birds, reptiles, or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Any company selling product or services for pet fish, birds, reptiles or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Would you be impacted by The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act? Virtually all fish in an aquarium are not native to the United States. Most pet birds are species not native to the US Most reptiles kept as pets are not native to the US. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and ferrets are not native to the US This bill would ban nonnative species not specifically approved by US Fish & Wildlife Service. AND, it does NOT only ban their importation, it also bans sales, transportation and breeding of these animals If you own a bird or reptile, and your specialized veterinarian is located across the state line from your home, you would be prohibited from taking your pet to its veterinarian If you own two fish and they have babies, you would be in violation of this law and your pets could be confiscated and destroyed. Don't plan on moving to another state with your pet. Crossing state lines with your hamster, fish, bird, snake or other nonnative animal will be illegal ANY animal except dogs, cats and goldfish will need to go through a costly, extensive study to prove they will not cause harm AND be approved by the US Fish and Wildlife Service before they can be pets. The proposed congressional ban on nonnative species will affect hundreds of millions of animals currently kept as pets. Simply enhancing and improving existing laws and regulations would meet the goal of preventing/minimizing the introduction of potentially invasive species. Under HR669, ANY animal not native to the U.S. would have to be placed on an Approved list created by the Fish and Wildlife Service, which does not have the manpower or financial resources to do it . Nonnative species includes virtually every bird, reptile, fish, and small mammal commonly kept as pets. Until an animal is placed on the Approved list, you would be banned from adopting, purchasing, selling, transporting across state lines, or breeding these animals. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Pet owners and the pet industry needs to be heard NOW. Contact members of the subcommittee both in Washington, DC AND in their district offices. Let them know you don't want them to ban your pets Attend your representatives Town Hall meeting during the Congressional Spring Break (April 6-17) and ask them WHY THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR PETS.Alert everyone you know and ask them to stand up and be counted.

It's strange that they also add FISH to this bill since there is no laws for keeping they alive. I can beat a dog in the head and it lands me in jail, but I toss a fish on the ground and nobody cares. "It's not just a fish" There's a better way.

You should be ashamed. Most of these non-native animals your talking about are actually native. They have just been hunted out or run out. If anything is a danger to the inviroment it's humans, not animals.

I love reptiles and I currently have a Nile monitor for a pet but I have had all types of reptiles growing up. props to Colleen for the information about a pet relieving stress, and being good for mental health, I believe that is what triggered me to adopt the Monitor. I have been under alot of stress lately and I believe that it is helping with that. Yeah that is just crazy thinking that everyone should go to jail for having a unique pet that is other than a cat or a dog. Where do these people get the right to try to make such extreme changes ? Why are they not using these abilities to help protect children who are being abused or anything else?

What a horrifying disaster for bird/parrot owners. As a senior citizen this would mean my birds would have be euthanized when I die. If I retire I could not move to another state where I might have an easier time living within limited means, they would have to be euthanized. The life span of birds/parrots rivals humans. Mine are teenagers in that regard. This bill is a death sentence.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. How much of an idiot could you be to let pets suffer? Humans carry disease too! Its not just the pets that are doing it, and besides, you should offer classes on how to care for animals rather than banning them. Disease can be caused by neglect, which can happen to ANY animal or human. I love my chinchilla, and I don't want her to starve to death when the proper food is no longer available. I actually USED to think that humans had brains. But now I see that I was wrong. Maybe you should consider banning humans then.

This is ridiculous. How typical for the government to take the lazy way out of finding illegal breeders/importers of truly exotic non-native species. They will probably say that ferreting out (for lack of a better term) individuals and organizations would create another beauraucracy and cost taxpayers more money than just a straight ban. Even though it's probably not true, I say fine use my taxes for that. Better than most of the other crappy social entitlements it's used for now.

This bill is retarded. Do they have any idea how many people and businesses they'll hurt by doing this? Whatever it is they're trying to protect or prevent, they're going about it the wrong way.
...and they can take my birds away from me when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers. ^_^

I can only imagine that there are so many people with these pets already that no one is going to be able to enforce a ban like this. PLUS this would seriously harm many many businesses when the economy is already strained.

I may not be from the States, but here in British Columbia the damned SPCA has made it so there is a provincial ban on many exotic pets. Some good, such as Reticulated Pythons and Burmese Pythons, and Iguanas, but only good for those who get them and have NO idea what they're up against. To those that do look after them and do so well, feel sorry for. But there is a rather large list, it really sucks.
But what the States is doing for their ban is just ridiculous, like those animals are the most common pets, seriously! They need to pull their overly large head out of their asses. Wouldn't surprise me that half of these government officials have these pets and won't have to get rid of them.

I own three rats, and two of them were supposed to be neutred, according to the previous owner. One day we looked inside the cage and the female was huge, and because the litter was accidental, my pets are punished. This bill is pathetic.

This law is pointless, and in the end will just lead to smuggling and neglect for pet's needs as the owners will be unable to provide for them. Just as people now smuggle ferrets into California all of the time, yet none of these pets seem to cause much of a problem, and unlike the laws against ferrets here would want us to believe they aren't causing chaos in California's ecosystems. We have more problems in my town with rabid skunks than we do with people bringing in exotic pets, or even the common dog, cat, or even wild rattlesnakes!
In my small neighborhood we have a problem with Canadian geese that don't migrate. I know a friend who let their pet hamster "be free", and that made no effect. The geese, however, have overpopulated, and are even polluting the small lake they live on to become a hazard to humans and fish alike. Most non-native species aren't even close to a threat. And when something that could be a threat is found, or just a non-native that someone has spotted, the ASPCA moves in and will catch the critter, and return it to its rightful owner. I've never heard of one of these pets being of any nuisance to animals or people alike.
This law would just cause chaos for a lot of businesses, which is the last thing we all need in this economy. People with these pets currently might not be able to buy essential items for their pets, or visit their regular vets. A responsible owner might not be possible, causing more people to simply give up and maybe even release their animal locally as a last resort for the animal to survive, possibly causing harm to that area's own ecosystem that this law wants to protect!
Often owners of exotics or other animals that would be covered by this bill are responsible. I've been studying up on hedgehogs for the past couple weeks, in hopes that in four or five years from now (when I may leave California, where hedgehogs are illegal just like ferrets) I'll be able to have one myself. Most owners are responsible and realistic. They have to be with people breathing down their necks every day, just waiting for them to slip up to make their pets illegal.
This bill is out of line, and shouldn't be passed. Simply: it's WRONG. In the end it will cause more problems than it's worth.

Please, do NOT pass HR 669. You would be hurting loads of business, and in effect, the economy as a whole. All the way from the lowliest pet shop to the largest veterinarian. Most exotic pets are not a danger to native species, so long as the pet owners are responsible and don't let their pets run/crawl/swim/fly free. Please, don't pass this bill!

Over my dead friggin' body will you take my corn snake. They're a necessary part of the local flora and fauna, otherwise the rat population would be much too high. And let's see, when's the last time someone died from a bite from one of those? She's my baby, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some jackass in a suit take her away from me, it's just like the ban on ferrets in California. Supposedly their reasoning was 'rabies' . Ferrets contract dumb rabies, which is a rarity in it's self. They'll die before the rabies even reaches the saliva glands. But this bill is just idiocy. You need a wildlife license for almost anything remotely dangerous at all, so what's the point?

I find this to be a bill that might of had good intentions but its been turned into something that A: will be almost impossible to enforce. B: Punish responsible pet owners and C: End up causing more harm to families and business than good. True we need to protect native species but throwing up and across the board ban is ridiculously unenforceable, short sighted, and will drive the market underground.

How frickin' ridiculous is that!?
What on earth is having a pet, that isn't native to the US harmful?! if anything its helping. If those animals were just out there half or more of them would die. Because they're accustom to living with humans, they'd be a bit too dependent on us.
u___u I think its a stupid act.
