We the undersigned respectfully urge you and Portia De Rossi to decline the 2009 Wyler Award the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is planning to bestow on you at The 23rd Genesis Awards on Saturday, March 28th, 2009, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

We are asking you to do this because HSUS campaigns for, and is responsible for, the mass slaughter of dogs that have suffered the worst form of abuse, torture and cruelty.  HSUS is humane in name only.

You are a big fan of Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. You had John Garcia, co-manager of Dog Town, on your show in December with Georgia, one of the Michael Vick pit bulls. You also have a cross posting on your website for Best Friends.

Are you aware that HSUS publicly campaigned to have Georgia and all the Michael Vick pit bulls killed, and continues to maintain that stance? Yes, the same dog you had in your studio, HSUS wants dead.

This is what the HSUS told the New York Times in July 2007:

Officials from our organization have examined some of these dogs and, generally speaking, they are some of the most aggressively trained pit bulls in the country, Wayne Pacelle, the president and chief executive of the Humane Society of the United States, said in a telephone interview Tuesday. The fate of these dogs will be up to the government, but we have recommended to them, and believe, they will be eventually put down. Pacelle said the Humane Society normally advocated that fighting dogs be put down shortly after being seized. It is lose-lose for the dogs, he said. They either die a gruesome death as a dogfighter in action, or they will be killed because they are not adoptable.

We all know the success of the Vick pit bulls, and you know it first-hand.

As HSUS was unable to kill the Vick dogs, it had to make sure it did it somewhere else. On Tuesday, 17th February 2009, 146 pit bulls, about half of them puppies (some only weeks old), were massacred in Wilkes County, North Carolina on the advice of HSUS.  This happened despite Best Friends Animal Society,  BAD RAP (Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls), Animal Farm Foundation, Villalobos Rescue Center, and Downtown Dog Rescue all offering to rescue these dogs. All these organizations have experience in rescuing and helping ex-fighting dogs; HSUS has none.

HSUS ensured that 146 Georgia's were needlessly slaughtered. The coalition of other organizations, led by Best Friends, was going to asses each dog individually, perform spay/neuter, and give them sanctuary and the chance of a new life in loving, forever homes. But thanks to the HSUS, they had no chance of a second chance. They were murdered.

If you accept the award from HSUS, you will be condoning the massacre HSUS is responsible for in North Carolina. You will be agreeing with their stance on killing Georgia, the other Vick dogs and all fighting dogs in general.

Did you know that starting on the very day of ex- NFL quarterback Michael Vicks 2007 dog fighting indictment, HSUS raised money online with the false promise that it would care for the dogs seized in the Michael Vick case.  The New York Times later reported that HSUS was not caring for Vick dogs at all.  HSUS altered its internet fundraising pitch.

John Goodwin, HSUSs Manager of Animal Fighting Issues, has no experience with dogs.

Please do not accept the award until:

1)    HSUS publicly apologizes and admits it was wrong about the Vick dogs.

2)    HSUS publicly apologizes and admits it was wrong to murder the 146 dogs in North Carolina.

3)     HSUS agrees that no dog will be murdered simply because it was seized from a fighting ring. As of 23rd February, HSUS says it will recommend that all dogs seized in fighting rings are to be assessed as individuals. HSUS must not be allowed to do the assessment themselves as they have NO experience in this area and will send all dogs to their deaths. HSUS must pledge to use assessment experts/dog behaviorists from outside organizations with experience in this area.

Ellen, you speak from a place of power and influence. You have a chance to change things for these voiceless, innocent, helpless dogs. We urge you do the right  thing. Do not accept the award and explain why publicly.

Dedicate a segment of your show to revealing the true nature of HSUS with regards  to its position on pit bulls/fighting dogs.

Think of Georgia, she would be dead if the HSUS had its way. You can save countless other dogs just like Georgia.

Ellen, thank you very much for all you do for the animals. They do not have a voice of their own and therefore need yours.

Yours sincerely,

Would everyone be so kind as to also read and sign the following petition which is targeted at HSUS and officials in North Carolina.
