Lafarge Canada has applied to the Ministry of Energy and Mines to expand their operation by 39.4 acres on Sheridan Hill in Pitt Meadows BC. Pitt Meadows city council voted at the meeting held on Oct 27th 2009 to "Not Recommend Approval" for the expansion. However, mining operations are regulated by the province, not the municipality. The expansion would allow the mine to come within 15 meters of the property boundaries on Sheridan Hill. Local animal families such as bear, deer, owls, eagles , and the 12 remaining pairs of sandhill cranes would also be displaced as the blasting moves closer and trees are removed. The hill also has a history of hidden Katzie treasure buried within the mountain. In short, this expansion would be a devastating loss to our community.
