Stop Mega Pig Farm in Derbyshire

  • by: Judith B.
  • recipient: Derbyshire County Council

A proposal to build a mammoth factory pig farm in Derbyshire is meeting stiff opposition. The animal welfare implications are obvious. Pigs are social, intelligent animals on a par with dogs. Despite some improvements in the UK, farming them intensively is still extremely cruel and unlikely to be tolerated if they were almost any other animal.

The proposal could also be a breach of human rights, an environmental problem and a human health risk. Pig farming on this scale involves the release of dangerous chemicals, including huge amounts of antibiotics and hormones. The farm would be situated near residences, the historic village of Foston and a woman's prison.

Vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly could be especially affected. It is also illegal to subject prisoners to inhumane treatment, including making them face health risks. Residents might have the option of moving but their rights should always be prioritised.

Tell Derbyshire county council not to allow the pig farm to go ahead.
We the undersigned ask that you not allow Midland Pig Producers to go ahead with their plan to build a huge intensive pig farm in south Derbyshire. Aside from the animal welfare and environmental implications, the farm, which would be sited near residences and a prison, could pose serious human health risks and is a potential breach of human rights.

We ask that you not give permission for this dangerous and possibly illegal project.

Thank you for your attention.
