Radio host Michael Savage says 99 percent of autistic children are bratsFrom the Associated Press 6:01 PM PDT, July 21, 2008 NEW YORK -- Radio talk show host Michael Savage, who described 99 percent of children with autism as brats, said today he was trying to "boldly awaken" parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed.
Some parents of autistic children have called for Savage's firing after he described autism as a racket last week. "In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out," Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday.
Savage offered no apology in a message posted today on his Web site. He said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a "national panic" by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate.
On his radio show last week, he said: "What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.'"
The government estimates about 1 in 150 children have some form of autism. But many experts believe these unsociable behaviors were just about as common 30 or 40 years ago and that the increase is mostly caused by a surge in special education services and a corresponding shift in diagnoses.
Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association, a parents' advocacy group, said she was invited to speak today on Savage's three-hour program by Savage's boss, Mark Masters of Talk Radio Network, which syndicates the show across the country. A spokeswoman from Talk Radio Network did not immediately return a call for comment.
Fournier called Savage's comments "way, way, way over the line and cruel."
"I'm hoping to make him see the reality of what these kids are facing," she said. "You can't fix it by telling a kid to shut up. It's like telling a kid with cancer to stop being sick."
Evelyn Ain, whose 8-year-old son has been diagnosed with autism, said she had never heard of Savage and couldn't believe what she had heard when she first listened to the remarks. She organized a demonstration today outside New York's WOR-AM, which broadcasts Savage.
"That isn't just freedom of speech, it is hateful speech when you say 99 percent of children with autism are brats," she said. "I'll tell you, I wish I had a brat."
Savage, with more than 8 million listeners a week, is talk radio's third most popular personality behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Talkers magazine. He's made a living off bold, outrageous statements: His brief MSNBC show was canceled after he told a caller he should "get AIDS and die, you pig."
Peter Bell, executive vice president of national advocacy group Autism Speaks, said he isn't aware of any big controversy about overdiagnosis of autism. He said Savage's remarks, effectively blaming parents, reflect an outdated point of view.
"He's an entertainer, he does these things for attention," Bell said. "I think we should, to the best we can, ignore it." If we ignore it nothing will be done and people will just pick on autistic children.

What racket? My son is autistic and his doctor did not prescribe medication for him. I'm not sure where this man thinks drug companies are making money of off autistic children. I think we should send a couple of autistic children over to this man's house so they can "boldly awaken" him to autism!

Is this "Michael Savage" actually serious? I PERSONALLY can say that my 6 year old AUTISTIC son is not, in any way, shape or form a brat! As a matter of fact, I have just found out that he has been harassed by some "brat" at school and is coming home with bruises and scratches! By the way, both I and his father have been together and married for 7 years, so that idiotic statement about them not having a father around is just that, idiotic! My son also does not take any medications and rarely sees the doctor, he was diagnosed by school professionals (psychiatrists, therapists, etc.), so the claim he is making about the "over-diagnosing to make money" is also not true. He is an insult to society and needs to read more rather than run his mouth!

I wish that my son was a "brat" and not autistic. If only people know what autism is really like and how tough it is to live with an autistic child! Especially when U love him sooooo much.

Talk show hosts should be held accountable for their words, especially when it comes to children who can't defend themselves. I believe he owes every autistic child and their parents a public apology. Furthermore, he should interview a mother or father of an autistic child and peditrician who especializes in this field to educate himself and the general public from misinformation. Thank you!

I have a 7 year old son who is a child with autism. Mr. Savage's comment really hurts.
I struggle each day to prevent my child from being picked on by people such as Mr.Savage. I feel sorry for Mr. Savage and pray that God has mercy on him.

Influential people like Michael Savage need to be held accountable for their actions. The comments he made about Autism simply show that he is not educated on the subject at all.

Michael Savage obviously has very little contact with families of children with ASD or he would be aware of the massive effort and incredible patients required to parent these children. It is specifically these type of comments that downplay the dedication of the parents that live 24/7 with their childs disability. ASD doesn't only disable the child with challenging situations it disables the entire family to live a 'normal' life. This includes the sibblings which miss out on parental attention, going on outings; such as a trip to the movies, because their sibblings find this experience unbearable and the frustration they too have about their sibblings disability. No-one chooses to have a child with ASD but all parents and families can do is persist in being patient with their child with this disability and educate thoes around them that the child is not a 'brat' but has special needs. I suggest Michael Savage spend some time with a family effected by ASD or watch rainman and think to himself; how would I cope if that were my child. It's very easy to critise from the outside but when you live the experience everyday, perception can easily change.
