Stop Ohio from Banning Pit Bulls Statewide

Target:
Governor Ted Strickland, Rep. Tyrone Yates & Ohio Lawmakers
Sponsored by:
Without your help, Ohio may become the first State to ban pit bulls.

Please let Ohio lawmakers know how you feel about their plan to make it illegal to own pit bulls, that there are better ways to protect the public from dangerous dogs and that pit bulls are not necessarily dangerous dogs.

Ask these lawmakers to solve Ohio's dog issues through effective dangerous dog ordinances, funding low cost and free spay/neuter clinics, banning tethering of dogs, and stregthening Ohio's antiquated animal cruelty laws.

Dog lovers and owners in the State of Ohio need you.  Don't let this witch hunt happen.

We the undersigned respectfully request that House Bill 568 be pulled from consideration in the State of Ohio.  House Bill 568 is not the answer dangerous dogs in the State of Ohio.  Typically, this type of legislation is enacted for two reasons: 1) to lower crime; and, 2) to protect the public from dangerous dogs.

Unfortunately, Breed Specific Legislation or "BSL" doesn't work.  It targets all dogs of a breed, or in this case breed type as there is no "Pit Bull" breed, including innocent family pets, search & rescue heros, therapy dogs, and dogs that help the physically challenged.  If the reason for this legislation is to lower crime, it won't work, criminals will switch to another breed or mixed breed when the bill becomes law.  Dog fighters will go farther underground in order to continue their lucrative business.

If the you are attempting to protect the public from dangerous dogs, you would serve your public far better by passing an effective potentially dangerous dog ordinance and encourage spay/neuter by supporting funding for free or low cost spay/neuter.  According to the National Canine Research Council, 90% of fatal dog attacks are by dogs that have not been spayed or neutered.  Additionally, there has not been a recorded fatal dog attack by a spayed/neutered pit bull type dog.  The Texas 2002 Severe Animal Attack and Bite Surveillance Summary, found that 81% of dogs involved in bite incidents were not spayed or neutered.

Protect the public by banning tethering or chaining of dogs.  The USDA and AVMA agree that tethering of dogs is inhumane.  When Lawrence County, Kansas, adopted an anti-tethering ordinance, calls concerning cruelty and dog fighting dropped from 800 to 260 in a single year.  Officials attribute the decline in large part to the anti-tethering law.  Additionally, any dog can become dangerous if they are unsocialized, isolated and not part of the family which is what tethering and chaining of dogs outside 24 hours a day, 7 days a week leds to.

Strengthening Ohio's barbaric anti-cruelty laws will lessen the dangers to the public.  In the book, Fatal Dog Attacks: The Stories Behind the Statistics, 61% of dogs involved in fatal dog attacks were not humanely controlled or had in some way been neglected or abused.

Finally, we would like to leave you with some pleasant pit bull facts:

·        The Animal Miracle Foundation's Hero Dog of 2008 is a pit bull mix that saved her owner from being murdered.

·        Dakota, a search and rescue American Pit Bull Terrier, was hand picked by both FEMA and NASA to be actively involved in the search for the space shuttle Columbia wreckage due to her proven search skills and professionalism in chaotic situations.  For her work, Dakota received a Certificate of Appreciation from the FBI.

·        In 1999, Dixie, saved her three young human family members by coming between them and a cottonmouth.  She was bitten but thankfully she didn't loose her life.

·        RCA was Alaska's first certified Hearing Dog.

·        Weela was Ken-L Ration's Dog Hero of the Year for 1993 for saving 17 dogs and 1 cat stranded on an island in a flooded river by making numerous trips across the river hauling 30 to 50 pounds of food each time until the animals could be rescued.

·        Stubby was the most decorated war dog in U.S. history.

Please think about what this bill could do to so many lives before it's too late.  We thank you for your time.

Please don't punish the dogs, it is not their fault...punish the humans who are more than likely guilty of cruelty to animals. If a dog is badly treated, no matter what breed or size, they will learn to not trust humans and strike out of fear. If you want to reduce the number of dog attacks, increase the penalties for cruelty.

The Belief that man is outfitted with an immortal soul, differing altogether from the engines which operate the lower animals, is ridiculously unjust to them. The difference between the smartest dog and the stupidest man—say a Tennessee Holy Roller—is really very small, and the difference between the decentest dog and the worst man is all in favor of the dog. He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Punish the people, not the dogs. I know more aggressive "toy" breed dogs than aggressive pits, rotts, dobermans, etc., etc. This is crazy! How many innocent and loving pets do they plan on euthanizing just because they are bully breeds?

i think this is all a bunch a bull! punish the freaking people who train the dogs to be evil. any dog out there can be evil and mean and that is because the owners train them to be like that. i DONT believe in putting a dog down until its due to an illness. any one can see this is the most stupidest thing that our stupid ass state has ever came up with!

The wrong group is being punished with this law. The dogs only are acting how they were taught by the humans that raised them. Punish the breeders that teach the dogs to be dangerous, not the innocent dogs.

Im a Veterinary Assistant and i've seen many bully breeds walk through the doors in the couple years I have been there. I have met lots of agressive chihuahuas and poodles, even been bit by a couple. But those bully breeds are the first to roll over on their back wagging their tails and lick your face before they would think of biting. The owners are great as well, follow the rules and laws given to them. They keep on their dogs training/socialization and give them proper care. How fair is it to punish them while these other people who view "pit bulls" as toys and torture the poor creatures get away without punishment? Any dog can be aggressive. So how about we take those animals laws that havent been changed in quite a few years and punish the people before the dog? Get rid of all those who dont deserve an animal?

How sad that Ohio wants to tell it's residents which type of dog to own. Our animal laws are ancient and yet Mr. Yates spends his time preparing a bill like this. How about introducing a Bill prohibiting Puppy Mills instead? As a professional pet groomer I can say that I have never had a bad experience with a Pit Bull or other so called Bully Breed in my establishment. They are loving and affectionate pets when raised correctly in a family environment. I have however been biten more times than I can count in my business. Invariably these bites come from uninformed pet owners who bought from a puppy mill or pet store where in breeding runs rampant. Ohio needs better animal laws, but a Pit Bull Ban is NOT the answer.

Please don't torture loving pet owners by doing what Denver has done to force people to move and sell their homes at huge losses or hide their dogs only to have them taken away. A dog named Forrest will probably be killed tomorrow in Denver because he dug under his fence the day his master was moving far away and walked into Denver proper and now if his DNA test comes back tomorrow and shows any pit bull in him he will be killed. America killed 1,600,000 pit bulls last year but we can't even let one named Forrest who has a loving owner and never done anything wrong go home. This is a tragedy and you must find another way to deal with bad owners. This smells like Nazi Germany or the bible where they took the first born son.Next we will kill chihuaua's because they bite people the most. Be careful all you owners of dobermans, german shepherd Akitas, Rotties...you could be next. This is incredibly cruel.

Dog breeds are not inherently bad! The people who raise the bad animals are irresponsible and cruel. Public education and proper law enforcement against breeders & trainers of mean dogs should be to the fullest extent of the law. And if the law is not strong enough to deter this behaviour in the humans, mske those laws and penalties tougher. Don't perpetuate the fallacy that a breed of dog is bad by banning it from living!

It is not the fault of the dog that it's breed is known for violence. That violence has been brought on by human brutality and ignorance. Blame the pet owners who allowed their animals to become dangerous and mean the same as you would the parents for their children. These animals learn from their owners how to behave. There are plenty of people who own loving, compassionate pitbulls, which would never hurt a soul. A police dog is known to occasionally attack a criminal after being called off or resisting the trainer when being called away. Nothing happens in these cases but if a dog feels threatened or uneasy about a person, they will attack regardless of breed. Please look at facts before making an irrational decision, which is the fault of humans not the dogs.

I dont feel it is right for the goverment to tell me what kind of a dog i can own. i am a very responsible "bully breed" owner, yes my dog is a pet but more importantly she is a family member. If the goverment is going to punish me for owning a "bully breed dog" who has never harmed anyone what do they plan to do parents of children who shoot, stab, kill or harm other people in anyway? Maybe ignorant people need to take there heads out of their rear ends educate themselves, and focus on the people who give these dogs a bad name- because they are the real criminals in this situation. i would like to hope that the people voting on this issue take the time to research the breed properly and not focus on the medias spin of the breed, just as they dont us to believe all the negitive accusations placed on them by the media. I hope you take my and others opinion in high consideration. Thank you for your time

Why hold the breed accountable when it is the irresponsible owners? Five years ago, Pit Bulls were insignificant, but because of the dog fighters and now the punk kids on the streets making these dog fight, everyone wants to ban the breed. Get real, hit the irresponsible pet owners in the pocket book if you REALLY want change and save the breed.

The entire breed should not be penalized for a few irresponsible pet owners. It is the owner's fault if a Pitbull becomes a danger to society. Many many small dogs are aggressive and attack small children. Ohio should also be banning dogs under 10 pounds too. Any dog no matter the breed can have the ability to hurt or even kill a human. Pitbulls should be evaluated on a case by case basis. I do not own a Pitbull currently, but would love to. I have 2 Great Danes and a Yorkshire Terrier, so I'm not biases persay.

This pitt bull ban is ridiculous. The behavior of a pit bull is based on its previous owner or owners. Training and behavior treating( like abuse) of any dog pit bull or not will make a dog agressive, violent, and a risk to family and friends. Unfortunately due to the pit bulls background, history, and breed make them a prime target for owners who get enjoyment in abuseing their dogs in any shape or form. To ban pit bulls you are punishing all. The ones who love and take care of them and the ones who abuse them. You should actually screen the owners.Just remember its not the dogs its the people that own and had owned them. Thank you for your time.

The breed of a dog is not the problem. The problem is irresponsible owners that do not train an care for their dogs properly. Too often people don't select a dog that suits their lifestyle. People adopt breeds that need more exercise than they are willing to provide. Independent intelligent breeds require more companionship and training so they do not get bored and develop negative behaviors. Dogs learn remarkably fast and are eager to please, it's people that don't bother learn how to communicate to their dogs and teach it behaviors that are acceptable and to extinguish behaviors that are not acceptable. Do not persecute a breed, hold owners accountable for not caring for their dog responsibly.

First let me say that I Oppose this bill. I myself do not own a pit bull, but I consider myself a grandmother of one! My daughter has raised 3 beautiful and loving pits, so far, in her lifetime, and I have never seen a mean side of these dogs. I have seen meaner Cocker Spaniels tho! I have always never understood these type of laws that don't make any kind of logical sense. If you raise a kid that ends up with a mean streak, that does harm to other people and possibly kills that person, Do you put him down right away? Heck No! We feed and cloth them for years and sometimes, a life time! Tell me? What's the difference! Let be honest, I agree that there is alot of people that should NOT own an animal. They have no conception of what it takes to be a responsible dog owner. How to train and give proper care to an animal. I have always said, reverse the situation! Let these people live like they are making their animal live! Boy! I think things would change then! Pit Bulls are beautiful breed. It is basically the upbringing.. Just look at Michael Vick!!!!I won't say what I think about him, and others just like him. Please think about what you are doing. Make the people who own the breed be responsible. Just like drug dealers, child molesters and so on. I can see if this bill is past, many people will probably end up moving out of the state of Ohio. I just moved here from Florida, 2 years ago to escape hurricanes. Now possibly my daughter will never be able to visit to see this lovely state. Think of no visits from your children. Thank You for your time.. Mrs. Claudia Woolford

Who are you to decide what animals are permitted to live and which animals should be killed. It is unforgivable what you are doing to helpless animals. What gives you the right? Who gave you the power to kill animals. Animals react only to the way they are treated and are not born mean. Animal owners are 100% responsible for the temperment of any of their so called pets. Perhaps law makers think they have the right to decide which people should be exterminated based on ethnic background. Stop the KILLING NOW. One of the Ten Commandments says, thou shalt not kill. I think that includes animals.

pit bulls are like people.you adapt to your enviroment.if you are raised in an unloving mean house hold you will grow up mean with no regard.but if u are raised in a loving nurturing enviroment.you will love and nurture in return.. if a human kills someone they are sent to jail.and thousands of murderers or even millions are in jail.but that doesnt mean all humans are bad.jus like pitbulls, yes sum are violent but u have to look more into their enviroment and owners.jus because there are a couple bad pits doesnt mean they should all be banned,if thats the case then we as humans should be banned in ohio.if pits are banned from ohio then so do people
