STOP PEBBLE MINE

STOP PEBBLE MINE

Target:
The Honorable Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska
Sponsored by:

Proposals to turn the Bristol Bay region into a huge mining district, complete with tailings-filled lakes created behind some of the largest earthen dams on the planet and access roads across the wilderness, are short-sighted and expose the regions incredible fish and wildlife resources to an unacceptable level of risk. Especially considering the areas propensity to earthquakes.

People from across America and around the world travel to Bristol Bay for some of the world's last great runs of wild salmon and rainbow trout.  The region also supports large populations of caribou, moose, grizzly, brown, and black bears, wolves, bald eagles, and millions of migratory waterfowl.  In short, Bristol Bay is a true wildlife mecca.

Should this mine with its toxic "great lake" be built, it will only be a matter time before we are facing a fish and wildlife emergency that will make the Exxon oil spill look like a grease spot.

Please help STOP PEBBLE MINE.

We the undersigned are deeply concerned with proposals to transform vast tracts of land in the southwest Alaska Bristol Bay watershed into a massive mining district.

People from across America and around the world travel to Bristol Bay to pursue some of the worlds last great runs of wild salmon and trophy rainbow trout.

The region also supports large populations of caribou, moose, grizzly, brown, and black bears, wolves, bald eagles, and millions of migratory waterfowl.  In short, Bristol Bay is a true wildlife mecca.

I respectfully request that the State of Alaska and the federal government consider creation of a watershed-wide system of conservation units to preserve the renewable resources this region supports.

Proposals to turn the region into a huge mining district, complete with tailings-filled lakes created behind some of the largest earthen dams on the planet and access roads across the wilderness, are short-sighted and lose sight of which are truly the most important natural resources.

Given the areas propensity to earthquakes, this plan exposes the regions incredible fish and wildlife resources to what we feel is a highly unacceptable level of risk.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

I fished in the Bristol Bay Drainage for over 20 years. It is too wondrous an area to be spoiled by a mine.

We need wild salmon for the health and well being of every citizen in the United States. We do not need the Pebble mine and its consequences and potential devastation it could cause.

As an Oregon native and avid Salmon/Steelhead fisherman, I have seen what environmental degredation had done to west coast salmon runs. Alaska's Bristol Bay Salmon is an Alaskan and American Brand-treasure, like Yellowstone National Park. A mine will make a few wealthy, employ a few until the mine is played out but a spill or some other disaster would be like another Exxon Valdez. Stop the Pebble Mine.

I have visited Alaska and I live on a lake in NC. God isn't making any more land. Protect and value what we have now. By the way, the meek won't inherit the earth!

Having grown up in WV, I know first hand how mining companies construct and operate "safe" mines. There's no such thing as "risk-free". Please do not destroy this beautiful wilderness.

I love Bristol Bay and the life its given me and my family. the first thing I do every summer is go down to the river and put my hands in the cold water and wash my face. some of my friends make fun of me, I try to explain it to them, That this River has given me all I have in life. That every thing I have ever owned was once a Salmon, I owe My life to Her. They just say ya sure Dave. I say to my self as I put my hands in the cold river "Ive come back for you once more, I am yours, and you are mine, I will only take what I need from you and give you all that I can, I Thank you for supporting me and keeping me Safe. I know one day you might take me and keep me, for good thing never last forever. If this summer is my time I have no regrets I am yours" Its hard to explain something that took a life time to acquire. I know deep inside me I to am part of this cycle of life. Yes I am proud and honored to be part of something so magical, I can honestly say I have helped feed over a million people. All my life I have been, and for the rest of my life I will be, an Alaska Commercial Fishermen in Bristol Bay! Now its my turn to show my son how too fish but more importantly how to Live! Please don't let them take this from us.

Please do not put Bristol Bay in any danger. Any plan that could damage the drainage system and the the Bristol By fishery is pure folly. Keep what we have as clean as possible. Geoffrey Loeffler

In the interests of income now, you are endangering the future of Alaska's Fishing industry and wildlife. Incredibly poor judgement.

I lived in Alaska for 15 years, in the bush, married to a fisherman. My late husband would be infuriated as I am. Why destroy a precious resource that supports many for a resource that makes a few very wealthy. Commonsense needs to set in quickly to decrease the impact of the unavoidable environmental crisis that is upon us. That anyone would wish to hasten environmental collapse for whatever reason instead of conserving and seeking sustainable alternatives to mining unrenewable resources is insane. Where is the wisdom among us. Those of us who truly love our earth and learned its spiritual as well as practical purpose will want to stop this pebble mine project and any other project within our scope of control.

Why risk desroying the LAST GREAT SALMON FISHERY IN THE WORLD. By allowing this mine to continue to production will be taking the stance that luxuries are more important thatn necessities.

This project will severely disrupt the balance of at least 2 rivers and have profound and lasting ripple effects that cannot be fully accounted for and realized until the work begins. Our ecosystems and wildlife are too important to support this type of project.

Devastating events of World history should be enough to prevent such a potential disaster from being a choice.

IF THE LOCAL'S AND THE INDIDGENOUS PEOPLE OF ALASKA ARE TELLING YOU THAT THIS WILL RUIN THE BRISTOL BAY FISHERY... THEN LISTEN TO THEM. THIS MINE WILL HAVE AN AFFECT ON MORE THAN THE WIDLIFE! WE'VE TAKEN ENOUGH FROM ALASKA! IT'S TIME TO REDUCE OUR CONSUMPTION AND GIVE BACK TO THE PLANET!

I think that the Pebble Mine will both help our WORLD, and destroy Alaska, I dont think that this is poinless, I agree that this would help our ecosystem FOREVER, think about all of the money and other resorces! Think about how much gas is costing, if we go through with the pebble mine, then all that will be okay. Im not for or against it, but I do think that people should put some serious thought into this.
