I am currently a university student majoring in one of the scientific fields. I began my studies with the idea that I would be able to make a difference in the world. Call me naive, but I truly believed that science was meant to benefit mankind. It seems to me that what is going on at CERN has more to do with the egos of a few cosmologists than uplifting humanity. I see it as a childish "I told you so" mentality. These scientists are so desperate to prove their theories and their intelligence by proxy, that they have lost all objectivity. Is even the slightest risk of a global cataclysm worth the knowledge that we may or may not gain? How sad it would be if we where the only intelligent life in the universe and we ended up destroying ourselves because our knowledge was negated by our lack of judgement.

Black holes, which will be produced by LHC (with expected rate as high as 1 per second) may not evaporate, as many physicist believe, but stay on Earth. Also, it is possible that obtained in LHC single free 'strangelet' may change all the Earth matter into 'strange' one (with energy emission comparable with supernova explosion). So, why we try to run such potentially apocalyptic laboratory on our planet? This is not a computer game! We may have not another chance!
