And, many students do not have the necessary information or experience to know what constitutes a healthy relationship.

We the undersigned, believe that Teen Dating Violence is a national problem that will not go away on its own. Students lack the necessary information to identify healthy relationships and need to be educated about how to identify an abusive relationship and where to seek help if necessary.
Schools are responsible for the education of our youth and are the best resource to ensure that all students receive this necessary information. We respectfully request that you support an initiative to require every school district in the state to adopt formal policies regarding Teen Dating Violence. Similar legislation was passed in Texas in 2007 and has been very well received. (HB 121)
Thank you for your time in reading this petition; we strongly believe that your actions on this matter will help to save lives.

The key is prevention, which can best be done through education, and the earlier, the better.

I have never been abused in a relationship but i kow many people that have been abused by a loved one. I feel that if they had more information on this topic they wouldnt have been put in that particular situation and every student needs to get the facts.

I work with adolescents and teen violence occurs more than what the general population is aware of. This must be a priority in our society to educate our youth.

Abusive relationships are one of the areas humanity is just beginning to speak about openly. People hide behind walls and use threats to control. Then a murder happens and many women are scared back into being controled, allowing themselces to be abused for fear of being the next victim. They do not see they are already a victim. And the abuse becomes 'normal'. It is amazing what we get used to.
Jennifer recognized her relationship as abusive and tried to leave, only to find herself in a situation beyond her understanding. I pray for the spirit of every abused person to recognize their abuse and seek help. Don't get out alone. Tell others. There are angels all around. The more people you speak to about the abuse, the more power you gain over the situation.
Don't be alone -
Jennifer's Godfather

Having someone available and knowledgeable and caring to talk to young people about relationships and personalities and behaviors could change so many lives. I was the typical abused teen. My mother was physically and mentally abusive and I married the male version of her before I was out of my teens. We had two children by the time I was 20 and looked like your normal college coed, but on the weekends he was trying to kill me. Finally, after a couple of years I just said enough is enough and left without anything. But I raised my wonderful kids to be amazing people, I finally finished my degree, and hope that no one has to endure a life so difficult to be free. The damage of the words may never go away but I know that man will never choke me, slap me, kick me, hold a gun to my head. Having an adult to help me and guide me would have been a wonderful gift.

No one deserves to be abused. Our young people are the jewels in the rough of our society. They need the knowledge that can protect their lives. Relationships are meant to be loving, not filled with violence.

It is so important that our young people be protected and also be educated that everyone needs to be treated with respect. No one deserves to be abused. All of our young people are important. Violence in relationships has far reaching negative consequences. In the future, our youth will be the ones making the laws. They have to be educated on what is right and what is wrong.

I am only 17 years old I was dating someone for two years that was about two & a half years older than me. I had recently broke up with him because his violence & anger towards me was getting worse & worse. It went to the point where my entire left side of my body was bruised & cut up. it took a bunch of my friends to finally sit me down & tell me that I HAVE to stop seeing him. I had just recently moved on the opposite side of town but i still see him around. I am deathly afraid of him. I can't step out of my house with out being scared that he's going to attack me. the last encounter that I had with him was about two days ago & it wasn't pretty. Him & a few of his friends decided that it would be "cool" to hit me & my best friend liz. so they basically jumped us at my friends graduation. We had told one of the campus cops & you could obviously see that my friend & i just got into a tuffle. but no one did nothing about it primarily because we tried defending ourselves & i guess you not supposed to do that if your being attacked. I AM SO SCARED. I want to get a restraining order & i've been trying to convince my mom to take me for the past three months but my mom has been scared that if i get the restraining order get might end up doing something completely worse to the entire family once he finds out it was me. It's not a pleasant thing to be in fear of your life every second of the day =/
