The MOTHERS ACT is a bill before Congress, already passed by the 110th House of Representatives with only 3 "no" votes, which sets up a nation-wide  "education" campaign to encourage "antidepressant" drugs and other psychiatric drugs to women who are expecting or have recently given birth.

Over 9,000 individuals across the United States and around the world have signed this petition to stop The MOTHERS Act, a screening and treatment bill which will increase the number of pregnant and new mothers taking psychotropic drugs.

Organizations currently trying to stop The MOTHERS Act include:

ICFDA: International Coalition For Drug Awareness; The Law Project for Psychiatric Rights; ICSPP: International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology; NARPA: National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy; AHRP: The Alliance for Human Research Protection; COPES: Coalition Of Parents Enduring Suicide; The Elizabeth Torlakson Foundation; CHAADA: Children and Adults Against Drugging America; MADNAP: Mothers Against Drugging the Nursing And Pregnant; Consumer Wellness Center; Parents for a Label and Drug Free Education; Texans for a Safe Education; Whitaker Health Freedom Foundation; WoodyMatters; www.wildestcolts.com Supporters; www.adhdfraud.com Supporters; AbleChild; Green Body and Mind; LifeDynamics; Global Suckling Initiative; babywhys.org Supporters; The Wellness Institute

Please consider the following four points of contention with regard to this bill:

1) The MOTHERS Act will assuredly increase prescriptions for antidepressants for both postpartum and pregnant mothers. Based on the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Events Reporting System data, over the past four years the estimated number of antidepressant-caused infant deaths and injuries was as follows:

  • 4,360 babies born with serious or life-threatening birth defects
  • 4,160 babies born with potentially fatal heart defects or heart disease
  • 2,900 spontaneous abortions
  • 3,000 premature births

2) New Jersey's 2006 Postpartum Depression law requires medical providers to screen women for mental disorders. Under the impetus of this new law, some New Jersey women were forcibly taken to hospitals in police cars from their homes or doctor's offices for simply mentioning depressed feelings or calling the state's PPD hotline (See full text of the Star-Ledger article at http://www.netpowwow.com/unite011109/ppdcriminals.htm).

3) The namesake of the bill is Melanie Blocker Stokes, a mother who jumped to her death from the 12th story of a Chicago hotel at 3 ½ months postpartum, following months of treatment including four hospitalizations, at least four different drug cocktails, and electroshock therapy. Only after she was treated with drugs documented by the FDA to cause suicidal ideation did she jump out of that window.

4) Numerous victims have spoken out against this bill, including many who currently have pending lawsuits against drug companies for deaths and birth defects. In addition, there are literally thousands of antidepressant birth defects and suicide lawsuits pending. States are suing drug manufacturers for illegal marketing of psychotropic drugs, and the State of Alaska is being sued for drugging children in state care. If the Federal Government sponsors another drugging program, it is simply asking for lawsuits to be filed, as more mothers are injured and more babies killed.

What could possibly justify the risks that The MOTHERS Act poses to unborn babies and their mothers? Please speak out and ask the 111th Congress not to be the group to pass this bill to increase infant deaths via fatal birth defects and unwanted, drug-induced spontaneous abortions. Considering the many lives of helpless unborn babies at stake, we must all UNITE to kill this legislation.

Petition text (what you are signing):

We the undersigned protest any passage of any bill in the U.S. Congress to screen and promote psychiatric drugs to pregnant and new mothers, and particularly to H.R. 20 and S. 324, The MOTHERS Act. This bill endangers mothers and children and puts the public at risk.

For more information we urge you to read current research concerning the dangers of drugs for all people, especially unborn and newborn babies at http://uniteforlife.org/. There you can learn more about the FDA-confirmed doubling of suicides on antidepressant drugs as well as the tremendous risks for unborn children, including spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, preterm birth, serious and often fatal heart and lung disorders in newborns, SIDS, and numerous other effects including inducing violence against others.

Furthermore we urge you to conduct an investigation into antidepressant drugs and consider passing a ban on any future government-endorsed mental health screening or psychiatric drug promotion efforts, as well as banning government funding for development of new antidepressant drugs.

Thank you for putting the well being and safety of the American people above all else.

As a breastfeeding mother, I feel that this act would further impact the choice women make regarding how they nourish their babies. Breastfeeding is the best thing that one can do for a child, it shouldn't be discouraged and that is exactly what this would do.

You shatter the woman's motherhood thinking that a first time mother is not capable of handling the pressure so you expose her to more pressure by showing that the baby is not fragile; that is using psychological torture through so-called screening for depression, which would lead to post-partum depression , and only those lucky mothers with inner strength snd lots of faith would beat the system.

The biggest danger is to produce an unhealthy generation of shattered mothers and violent children in reaction to the invasive and tormenting experiences that new mothers go through right after giving birth, which is the most vulnerable phase in a woman's life. The other biggest danger is that a lot of mothers would choose to labor on their own or at home with a midwife rather than being at the mercy of the crazy system including the OBGYN and hospital staff and social workers..etc. This might potentially increase the number of infections and/or downsyndrom-type children.

The physicians and medical industry do not accurately report the harmful effects of treatment that may include iatrogenic injury or death because of ingrained professional bias and concerns about liability. The professional and pharmaceutical industries have a total dependence on the use of many medications that do harm to people. They also have a long term investment in having patients continuing to need treatment even when it obviously continues to fail. They seldom take responsibility for the negative outcomes of treatment and it is and accepted practice to blame the patient or the patient's family or the patient's advocate for the failures.

People doing the mental health assessments are focused on and invested in finding pathology. No one takes responsibility for the iatrogenic injury and death directly related to the treatment (medications, ECT, etc.) Coercion and substitute judgment is routinely used instead of informed consent. Individual civil rights are compromised.

I suffered from postpartum depression and feel there are other measures that would be more helpful.

It appears to be a "blanket solution" that will do as much harm as good.

Mothers carry the future of this planet and should be highest on our list of seeing that they get the utmost care and support. If they are not supposed to be drinking alcohol for fear of affecting the unborn, how can taking mind altering anti-depressant drugs be any different? What affects the mother also affects the child. As evidenced by drug addicted new borns, children being born with aids... Is humanity lost already?

Another nail in the coffin of Human Rights. A government "of the people, for the people" should not be passing Bill's, laws or anything of the sort that does not benifit all of the people. The Mothers Act is nothing more than a targeted atack on the future of your nation. It is a spinless act of suppression against a population in need of nothing more than compassion, understanding and people (supposedly elected) who will stand for what is right and just. A yes vote to this Act is nothing short of blindness to all but a marketing campaign for yet more $$$$$$ to cripple an already buckling nation. Much easier to vote no now, than it will be to reverse after having voted yes. LOOK FOR YOURSELF and verify the evidence you are shown from another independant source not associated with the original information. You are the eyes and ears of so many, and they are counting on you to be vigillant, don't sell them out! Blind faith will get us all killed. A puppet is not free!

This act is dangerous in so many ways. Even if you don't have an issue with mental health screenings or drug use, making this mandatory violates the patients/mothers rights, potentially violates her religious freedoms... And, where do we draw the line with that??

This act surely violates the rights of the mother and, potentially, violates the religious rights and freedoms of the mother, should mental health screening or drug use be against her religion.

Please, decision makers, take a good look at the results of psych drugs or treatment. Did not the phenomena of shootings take off, at the same time as prozak and other similar drugs became prescribed en masse?

The drugging of a pregnant woman. She should stay as toxin free as possible for the sake of her unborn child.

This is terrible legislation designed to increase pharmaceutical company profits, not to benefit women.

That pregnant women or new mothers will be forced to take these dangerous drugs or simply not be given any other options. They also may not be fairly informed of adverse side effects from medications.

there isn't any scientific proof that PPD has anything to do with chemical imbalances or any of that other psychobabble. so the "logic" is "let's give mothers drugs proven to cause death and suicide to treat a condition we can't even prove exists." please do not support the Mothers Act

The gov't needs to stop invading a woman's right to privacy. Her body is her own body, not someone else's to make decisions upon.

It's invasion of a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body.

The act is absolutely disgusting. Women have been giving birth since the dawn of humans. Now they suposedly need potentially dangerous psychotic drugs to get them through? Pregnancy is not a Mental Disorder!

We don't know what these supposed drugs do. They could certainly affect a mother in the wrong way, and perhaps it could even affect the bonding of a mother and her child in a negative way.

# 13,193:

Please don't sign The Mother's Act into law. This is far too sweeping a bill and I don't believe there is scientific data to back up it's claim that it would work.

The biggest danger is that any kind of testing in the area of mental health is very arbitrary and not at all scientific and thus could lead to false or wrong diagnosis. Giving out these very strong drugs to young women who do not need them in my opinion is criminal and it should not be done.

There is not enough coverage on this bill for people to make people aware of this act. The public needs to be informed but on the other hand there is so much apathy from the public...because it does not effect them...but for the new born children and those mothers who are going to the hospital to give birth...could have their new borns taken away...this has got to be stopped and there has to be a voice given to those who have no voice.

Who can give consent for the unborn? The birth mother is not medically educated; the physician is brainwashed by "education" and the politician is bribed by "campaign contributions". Is there none who will raise a standard of morality? The Church, which was heretofore so very concerned about contraception and now still is about abortion, should give some concern to the drugging of expectant mothers, because their unborn children are affected by these psychotropic drugs.

At least, not to drug expectant mothers, for these drugs are untested for fetus safety. Post-partum depression is very real, but so is the danger of these drugs. There should be special training given to psychiatrists concerning potential harm and possibly safer alternatives.

For those who are aware enough to see what this truly means, and for those who can recognize this is just a tool whereby to control the human race as a whole, I hope you can awaken your friends and make them see the truth as society today is distracted with entertainment and unaware to the facts which are hidden behind the scenes. Log onto Citizens Commission on Human Rights - they are doing something about it. They will help you in your efforts to stop the insane attempts to wipe out this race through the use of drugs and rid us of our future leaders, the children who will make our tomorrow.

Please read the bill. This legislation supports research to find the best treatment for postpartum depression. There is nothing that states women must be medicated. In fact until there is funding for research no one will know if natural remedies or counseling can help these women more than medication. Noone would force anyone to take medications but there aren't many other options until there is money to start other programs, and that is what this bill will do. This billl supports screening all women, just like you would screen for breast cancer or any other health problem. 20% of women who have babies suffer from perinatal mood disorders and it has lifelong effects on the whole family. Please read the bill before you decide it is not good.

I feel that the Mothers' Act would seriously violate my rights. I also believe that it would cause significant damage to mothers' and babies' health, both immediately and in the long term. Having personal experience with mental health problems prenatally and post partum, I truly believe that psych drugs did more harm than good for me and my baby. They should not be considered a short or long-term solution to a issue as complex as mental health problems in the general population.

This must be stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard that babies in the womb might even be given psych drugs!!!!! Women who are pregnant have a lot of hormonal shifts going on, and every single woman will have some major mood swings because of many issues, none of which have anything to do with chemical imbalances in the brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The world has already gone downhill. With this kind of acts its speed down goes faster. And guess what? We live in it! It's our responsibility to take care of ourselves. We cannot turn around and ignore.

Nobody reads the side effects of psych drugs or at least nobody puts them out in public because if people read them they would never buy them! Who wants to take drugs that can make him go nuts! Ask yourselves how many have been "cured" and how many have just died from the effects which are thoughtfully hidden by the people that profit from You buying the drugs! We don't want crazy mothers around made that way from the drugs who become threat to themselves and the children they bear!

I hope you realize by letting the pharm "drug pushers" do this that you are forcing women to take risks in not seeking proper healthcare for theirselves or their unborn children due to the fear of being forced to take meds that should be banned except for those so unstable that they are in an instutiution. What have we become as a country when we are willing to risk babies lives and safety for a money. Anyone who is in favor of this bill should be ashamed of themselves. They disgust me!

It more or less takes away a mothers right to decide whats best for her and her baby.

Our own Medical History in this country and the FDA's own warnings suggest that this is simply another murder bill whereby congress will legalize delayed murder. God will hold you each accountable who pass such legislation! Not just this bill. You will face God one day and Jesus will be your prosecutor! Repent of your own sins and do not support this or similar bills. ========================= John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Imagine that there is a country touted to be the most powerful of the free nations on a planet. It is ruled by those elected by the people of that nation. Their job being to look out for the concerns of those people on a wide-scale basis. What madness is it then to discover that those same people are actually pawns of pharmaceutical companies whose agenda for profit would go so far as knowingly encouraging the drugging of the people of that country with drugs that may cause them to kill themselves, or kill others?

The side effects of these drugs are very clearly labeled on the packages themselves. Those listed side effects speak for themselves. Only the madman would give someone something that says take this and it might make you want to kill yourself or your schoolmates or your fellow soldiers!

These psychotropic drugs would harm women; they would not be able to take care of their children BECAUSE of the psychotropic drugs. If women are depressed they need good counseling, not drugs!

Mothers losing their children, mothers' health being ruined because of drugs and also becoming addicted to the drug.

The dangers of the US government drugging pregnant mothers will cause many deaths and birth defects plus suicides. You must stop this madness thinking a drug will cure every problem and you must stop your corruption of taking campaign dollars from drug company's while passing bills that will put their profits up. Think about the damage you are doing to human life?

The deaths of women and their babies is on your dirty corrupt hands.

RESPONSIBILITY MEANS MAKING DECISIONS BASED ON FACTS WITH PROOF. DECISIONS BASED ON OPINION WITHOUT PROOF IS IRRESPONSIBLE. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROTECT PEOPLE FROM THE INFLUENCE OF MONEY AND JUST DO THE RIGHT THING!
