The MOTHERS ACT is a bill before Congress, already passed by the 110th House of Representatives with only 3 "no" votes, which sets up a nation-wide  "education" campaign to encourage "antidepressant" drugs and other psychiatric drugs to women who are expecting or have recently given birth.

Over 9,000 individuals across the United States and around the world have signed this petition to stop The MOTHERS Act, a screening and treatment bill which will increase the number of pregnant and new mothers taking psychotropic drugs.

Organizations currently trying to stop The MOTHERS Act include:

ICFDA: International Coalition For Drug Awareness; The Law Project for Psychiatric Rights; ICSPP: International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology; NARPA: National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy; AHRP: The Alliance for Human Research Protection; COPES: Coalition Of Parents Enduring Suicide; The Elizabeth Torlakson Foundation; CHAADA: Children and Adults Against Drugging America; MADNAP: Mothers Against Drugging the Nursing And Pregnant; Consumer Wellness Center; Parents for a Label and Drug Free Education; Texans for a Safe Education; Whitaker Health Freedom Foundation; WoodyMatters; www.wildestcolts.com Supporters; www.adhdfraud.com Supporters; AbleChild; Green Body and Mind; LifeDynamics; Global Suckling Initiative; babywhys.org Supporters; The Wellness Institute

Please consider the following four points of contention with regard to this bill:

1) The MOTHERS Act will assuredly increase prescriptions for antidepressants for both postpartum and pregnant mothers. Based on the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Events Reporting System data, over the past four years the estimated number of antidepressant-caused infant deaths and injuries was as follows:

  • 4,360 babies born with serious or life-threatening birth defects
  • 4,160 babies born with potentially fatal heart defects or heart disease
  • 2,900 spontaneous abortions
  • 3,000 premature births

2) New Jersey's 2006 Postpartum Depression law requires medical providers to screen women for mental disorders. Under the impetus of this new law, some New Jersey women were forcibly taken to hospitals in police cars from their homes or doctor's offices for simply mentioning depressed feelings or calling the state's PPD hotline (See full text of the Star-Ledger article at http://www.netpowwow.com/unite011109/ppdcriminals.htm).

3) The namesake of the bill is Melanie Blocker Stokes, a mother who jumped to her death from the 12th story of a Chicago hotel at 3 ½ months postpartum, following months of treatment including four hospitalizations, at least four different drug cocktails, and electroshock therapy. Only after she was treated with drugs documented by the FDA to cause suicidal ideation did she jump out of that window.

4) Numerous victims have spoken out against this bill, including many who currently have pending lawsuits against drug companies for deaths and birth defects. In addition, there are literally thousands of antidepressant birth defects and suicide lawsuits pending. States are suing drug manufacturers for illegal marketing of psychotropic drugs, and the State of Alaska is being sued for drugging children in state care. If the Federal Government sponsors another drugging program, it is simply asking for lawsuits to be filed, as more mothers are injured and more babies killed.

What could possibly justify the risks that The MOTHERS Act poses to unborn babies and their mothers? Please speak out and ask the 111th Congress not to be the group to pass this bill to increase infant deaths via fatal birth defects and unwanted, drug-induced spontaneous abortions. Considering the many lives of helpless unborn babies at stake, we must all UNITE to kill this legislation.

Petition text (what you are signing):

We the undersigned protest any passage of any bill in the U.S. Congress to screen and promote psychiatric drugs to pregnant and new mothers, and particularly to H.R. 20 and S. 324, The MOTHERS Act. This bill endangers mothers and children and puts the public at risk.

For more information we urge you to read current research concerning the dangers of drugs for all people, especially unborn and newborn babies at http://uniteforlife.org/. There you can learn more about the FDA-confirmed doubling of suicides on antidepressant drugs as well as the tremendous risks for unborn children, including spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, preterm birth, serious and often fatal heart and lung disorders in newborns, SIDS, and numerous other effects including inducing violence against others.

Furthermore we urge you to conduct an investigation into antidepressant drugs and consider passing a ban on any future government-endorsed mental health screening or psychiatric drug promotion efforts, as well as banning government funding for development of new antidepressant drugs.

Thank you for putting the well being and safety of the American people above all else.

This is yet another ploy by the drug companies and psychiatric association to pull the wool over the public's eyes and make psychiatric screening and the taking of psychiatric drugs seem normal - it is a lie. It is big lie that is very insidiously and cleverly marketed. Hooking the world on mind altering drugs and making a zombie nation when there are natural and other alternatives than the psychiatric mind bending, debilitating and generally life threatening drugs. They are drugs along the order of cocaine and WORSE and anyone thinking about giving these dangerous drugs to women who are expecting has other purposes than "helping". It is harm in the guise of help. This is seriously and simply a money issue or the psychiatric industry and there is absolutely no intention on helping these women. There is NO chemical imbalance, there are NO tests and the psychiatrists themselves, admit to not having a clue about how to actually help people and if the drugs works. There is plenty of evidence of the "wonder drugs" ramifications, plenty, one just has to look for themselves and look at the facts and not be fooled by the clever marketing and lies. The facts are evident, take away the advertising campaigns and look at the true life stories of the families that have had a child commit suicide, or a husband. Look at the physical manifistations that for the most part are permanent, such as uncontrollable muscle spasms that are also very painful. This act should not ever be passed AT ALL and any further acts such as these should not either. People should, instead be given the facts about these drugs and the focus should be on other alternatives that are natural and not life threatening. This is just another way to kill off a nation. No way! It's time to actually take off those rose coloured galsses and stop being fooled by these jokers.

What do you consider the biggest dangers of The MOTHERS Act?

I feel that the Mother's Act takes away a mother's rights and choices as a human being and as a mother. I think that it a dangerous proposition and that it will falsely diagnose women and give them mind altering drugs unnecessarily that will also get into the newborn child's system through the mother's milk. I think that this Act is a truly horrible idea.

This would give much higher costs on invalid mothers, because there not only will take the medicaments during the pregnancy. The healthy costs will increase. The mothers get in a dangerous situation, because there are on "drugs".

The most of people which take some anti-depressiva have done suicide or went amok. This is not survival for the family and also the people arround this person, which is on anti-deprissiva.

Would you have wanted your mother to be drugged while she was carrying you or raising you? Would you have wanted her to be on medication while driving you to school? while nursing you? Would you have wanted your mother to be one of those mothers such as the one in Texas that drowned all her own children in the bathtub? Or the one who recently through her own children off a bridge? Take a good look at what is going on in the world around you. There are kids killing kids in school shootings, and these kids were later found to have been taking anti-depressant drugs. If this bill goes through, you are condemning the future generations of our nation to all of the above. I wouldn't have wanted that for myself and I do NOT want that for my grandchildren and their children.

This bill undermines the family unit by usurping the responsibilities of the individuals in that unit to take care of each other. The family unit is the core element of our society and must be protected or the society will fail.

SSRI or every type of antidepressant must to be used only in a specific range of deaseses.every pregnant woman needs help if has a difficult, they don't need a push to this kind of drugs

children malformations and serious side effects to the mothers should be considered a damage for all the umanity, not a help

Forcing pregnant mothers to take anti depressants drugs while nursing or pregnant is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If a homeless person on the street knows it unsafe to expose a growing fetus to unnecessary drugs and chemical. Any mother on the planet is going to be a little depressed when they get pregnant and start dealing with the changes being pregnant brings.

That fetuses will be born with birth defects, and mothers will have a higher rate of suicide. Any mother shouldn't be exposed to unnecessary risks to themselves or their babies. That babies will be born with brain damage.

Mothers Act is another way to improve pharmaceutical companies incomes.

The Mothers Act is a violation of informed consent and it's against mothers and babies.
