Stop the NYRI Power Line

Target:
NY Assembly, NY Senate, NY State Governor, US Congress, US DOE, FERC
Sponsored by:
The NYRI is a power line project proposed by a group of Canadian investors.  The NYRI plans to build a 190 mile long power line through New York,  destroying the environment, harming the local economy, and potentially causing health and safety risks.

The following information is from: http://www.stopnyri.com/affectyou.html

Our scenic%u2014and quiet%u2014landscape destroyed

  • The towers will be well above the tree line and visible for many miles%u2014up to 180 feet on the river (that's 30 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty) and 83 feet on the pipeline.

  • Construction will require clear cutting 200 miles of federally protected park land and private property. The width of the path? 125 feet with an additional 1/8 mile of "wiggle room" on both sides (the length of 4 and a half football fields).
  • The lines will emit a constant 40 to 50 decibels of sound (equal to the sound of continuous light traffic)
Economic losses
  • The economy of our region is fragile and dependent upon revenue from tourism (fishing, boating, summer camps) and second homeowners. If the scenic landscape that attracts these groups is destroyed, revenues will decline dramatically, far outweighing whatever compensation NYRI offers to individual communities.

  • Studies show that values for properties near where high-voltage tower lines are installed decrease by as much as 50 percent. Decreases of this magnitude will drastically reduce property tax revenues,  which, in turn, will lead to decreased services for municipalities and schools that depend on property-based taxes.

  • Studies predict that electric costs in upstate New York will actually rise about 5 percent if the electricity from here is transported downstate on the NYRI line as planned.
Health hazards
  • The lines will emit massive electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that credentialed scientists believe may cause cancer in adults and leukemia in children.

  • EMFs are also known to damage pacemakers.
Safety risks
  • The lines will transmit 800,000v high-voltage direct current (HVDC) (400,000 HVDC per line, two lines per tower). If a cable fell, it would shut off in 1/3 of a second%u2014but still be the equivalent of 40 to 60 lightning strikes. In the river that could be quite a fish-fry; or near a gas leak. . .

  • NYRI claims that there are no known instances of a DC cable blowing down in a hurricane or a tornado, but the UDPC's Troy Bystrom says that there is a case of strong winds (which our region is known for) causing cables to PULL a tower down.

  • Stop the Powerlines asked a NYRI rep at one meeting what would happen if a train derailed and hit a pole. He said that it wouldn't happen, because "trains don't go very far off the tracks when they derail." This is news to anyone who saw pictures of any of Norfolk-Southern's recent derailments. The NYRI rep also said that derailments were "rare," but there was one just this year on the NS line and one on May 30 on the NY Susquehanna & Western.

  • There is evidence that electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from the power lines may corrode the metal in the Columbia gas pipeline if it is within close proximity.
Environmental damage
  • NYRI claims the project will take 4 years to complete. Four years of dynamite blasting, noisy diesel cranes and general commotion will displace wildlife, including eagles, perhaps forever.

  • Scientists also believe that EMFs may disorient birds that navigate via magnetic fields and sterilize eagle

To Whom this Concerns:

We the undersigned seek your utmost and immediate attention in regards to the proposed NYRI Power Line.  Vast numbers of communities and individuals are opposed to the implementation of this line for the following sited reasons:

Health hazards

The lines will emit massive electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that credentialed scientists believe may cause cancer in adults and leukemia in children. (Source: http://www.stopnyri.com/affectyou.html)

Environmental damage
NYRI claims the project will take 4 years to complete. Four years of dynamite blasting, noisy diesel cranes and general commotion will displace wildlife, including eagles, perhaps forever. (Source: http://www.stopnyri.com/affectyou.html)

These points represent only a small number of derogatory ramifications which would prevail should this line be allowed to cut through our communities.  It is imperative that you take this issue seriously.

We thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

The negative economic impact will devastate our already faltering upstate economy and dwindling real estate values. Our electric rates will go up to guarantee NYRI a 13.5% rate of return on their investment thus ensuring the continued loss of our few remaining family farms. These farms have often been in the same families for generations and represent a precious cultural resource. This project would cut farms in half, take land out of production and pose health risks to the people and animals that live here. I will not buy produce, dairy products or meat that has been raised in the shadow of these lines. With risks like these, this proposal needs your full attention.

I refuse to have any more visual pollution in my environment. Rather than build more power lines, let's cut our usage by 20%!!!!!!

To Whom it concerns: Please join us in opposing this proposed powerline. It will ruin our beautiful area, keep tourists away, and have a negative effect on the many second-home owners we have here. NYRI has not proved a need for this proposed powerline. If a need is proven, they could use the Marcy South exisiting ROW or bury the lines. It's a purely for-profit venture, with no proven need for extra power. PLEASE VOTE NO! Thank you.

I am opposed to the proposed powerline because our area of the Upper Delaware River is designated a "wild and scenic" river, and is part of the National Park Service. We are home to dozens of pairs of bald eagles and all kinds of wildlife. This area is still pristine and beautiful--a powerline would ruin that. Please consider vetoing this proposal, or at least have NYRI use the existing Right of Way of the Marcy South Line that has already scarred this area. Thank you.

Stop the NYRI from destryoing Sullivan County,NY!

When are we going to stop destroying for corporate greed. Has this country not already suffered enough? Here we are with another example of potential abuse of power. This proposed power line goes against the very constitution yet some how these investors have managed to twist what should be held sacred to line the pockets of their Gucci suits. This is the biggest oxymoran. They propose to deliver efficient and clean energy however this threatens to destroy anything in its path should they win approval. How does any of this make sense? My husband is a doctor and for every medical study that tries to dispute that the power lines aren't a health risk there are dozens that prove that the major health risks are very real. Everything that was old is now new. This country has been through a rough patch the past few years and people want to return to a simple life. That's what Sullivan county and surrounding areas offer. Let's stop another corporate company from destroying homes, property values, compromising the health of human beings, potentially harming nature, wildlife and reserves. Let's get together and finally send a message that WE ARE NOT FOR SALE!!!!!!

Please don't do this to one of New York State's most beautiful counties, Sullivan County. It is a place who's natural beauty should be protected, along with the several endangered species that call it home (like the bald eagle).

There are studies from UK showing the high voltage powerlines increase the risk of childhood leukemia. Other studies show that it may increase the risk of brain tumors, breast cancer, miscarriages, and Lou Gehrig's disease. Please don't let NYRI take advantage of the people that call Sullivan County home or their vacation home away from home. The potential damage to the environment could affect several species of animals, as well as bring potential health hazards to humans. The proposed line will be more disruptive than help and is only being done for corporate money interests. It will not lower the price of electricity.

I have major concerns regarding the 190 mile long power line proposal for New York. It would destroy our local environment and would cause health risks. It will also destroy much of our beautiful landscapes, which is an economic and aesthetic benefit to our region. Why don't they run the lines along the highways that are already in existence? It wouldn't affect as much of our environment, because the land has already been cleared. Thank you. Laurie Kilgore

I'm against this project for the loss of the beauty of NY as well as the environmental damage, human and animal health issues, as well as the proposed increased cost to me. I'm against foreign countries taking our lands. I'm for much more energy efficient programs to help home owners use less and less energy. I think we see that people are using less and less in these hard economic times and it should continue. The Mohawk valley and all of NY needs to stay beautiful and healthy for our people and not for Canadians to make money off of us.

The energy is created in WV and the pollution stays in WV. Why should West Virginian's pay the health and environmental price to send energy to other states?

There are other more earth-friendly, less destructive routes that have been proposed that are better suited to accomplish the objective of providing power to needy Easstern areas of our country.

I live in Maryland and we are faced with another one of these mega-powerlines going through - in this case, it will go right across my front yard. I am opposed to these powerlines for environmental reasons - they will cut through miles of pristine wildlife habitat. The power companies have not fully demonstrated that this is the only solution to the problem. What have they done to maintain the existing lines? Also, who do you think will be paying for all this, which will cost billions of dollars? You can bet it won't be the electric companies!

ALTHOUGH MY CURRENT RESIDENCE IS VIRGINIA, I'M A NEW YORKER. I AM PLANNING TO RETURN HOME WHEN MY SITUATION ALLOWS. I HAVE JUST PURCHASED A PIECE OF PROPERTY ON TYLER RD., COCHECTON, NY (SULLIVAN COUNTY). THEREFORE, THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN A MAJOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS PURCHASE.

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO OVERRIDE THE RIGHTS/DESIRES OF INDIVIDUAL STATES, OR THE PEOPLE. IF "THE GOVENMENT" CONTINUES TO PROCEED WITH THE WILL OF THE POLITICIANS, INSTEAD OF THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, IT IS THE RIGHT AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PEOPLE TO ACT. THIS IS IN THE CONSTITUTION (YOU ALL REMEMBER THAT DOCUMENT, DON'T YOU?) NYC HAS ENOUGH EXPOSURE TO THE SHORELINE TO ACHIEVE ALL THE ELECTRICITY NEEDS, NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE WITH WIND POWER. THERE'S ALSO SOMETHING CALLED SOLAR POWER, WHICH COULD SOLVE, AT LEAST A BIG PART OF THE PROBLEM. WITH TECHNOLOGY ALLOWING US TO CAPTURE "CLEAN" ENERGY EVERYDAY, WHY IS THERE SUCH A PUSH FOR THIS????? WHY? BECAUSE OF GREED!!!! WHO'S IN WHO'S POCKETS...........IT'S ALMOST UNBELIEVEABLE, WHAT SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE GETTING AWAY WITH......IT'S SOOOOO OBVIOUS!!! ALTERNATIVES HAVE BEEN SUGGESTED BY CURRENT PROVIDERS......ASSURANCES MADE THAT THEY CAN AND WILL PROVIDE THESE SERVICES, WHY INFURIATE THE CITIZEN WITH A PLAN THEY DO NO WANT OR NEED...............THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR AND POLITICS.....IT'S OBVIOUS!!!! I HAVEN'T EVEN TOUCHED ON THE HORRIBLE HEALTH EFFECTS OF LIVING UNDER OR NEAR THESE LINES. LET'S PUT ONE ON THE FRONT LAWN OF THE CAPITOL, AND IN THE YARDS OF EVERY ONE OF THESE POLITICIANS (WHO ARE PROBABLY GOING TO BENEFIT IN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER$$$$$) AND THEN WE CAN TALK. THERE'S MUCH LEFT UNSAID. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THE NYRI.......BUILD THEM IN THE YARDS OF THEIR INVESTORS...

I am disturbed that this project will have a very negative impact on the rural nature of this area diminshing the quality of life for both our species and others.

I can see the cuurent Marcy line alone the ridges and have seen first hand what it does to the serene atmosphere. Let's not do it again! Lets reduce electice use instead. Turn off what you do not need on. Only buy energy star applicances and convert to more friendly energy sources. What a boom that would be to the economy.

Not only would the powerlines be a health-hazard and an eyesore, they would also destroy the beautiful countryside and threaten endangered species. The East Coast has very few areas left that are truly rural, this makes Central New York all the more valuable and unique. Just because our population is relatively small doesn't give NYRI the right to try to take advantage of us.

Our purchased property that my wife and I plan to retire on will be utterly ruined if the power lines are put up. They will be directly across the street. Ugly! Ugly! Will want to retire somewhere else!

For scenic, possible health reasons and depreciation of property value.

I just don't believe this is necessary. If we are trying to work on forward thinking energy policy, connecting huge coal plants to cities is not the right move. Fact is, we need to develop more regional power generation that requires less transportation of the electricity, radiating less people and other life.

What happened to waiting until you get home to check messages and look at your computer? We need to get back to some old ways and forget some of this unnecessary technology!

I grew up in a neighborhood where several people died of cancer and the power lines were right behind our house. Did you ever hear them buzzing on a rainy day? It is so scarey. We can't let this happen! Did anyone ever see the movie Jacobs Harvest? The cows die because of the electic frequency and it is a true story. How many times do we need to be experimented on before they see the real picture?!!
