Nowadays less and less children dream of becoming teachers for the simple reason that people want to do something "for a living", not to work all for nothing. I am afraid that qualified teachers will soon be an endangered species and even those who still exist, have no motivation to do their work properly ("no pay, no play"). We do want our children to be well-educated but does anybody want to pay for private lessons just because the country does not want to pay the teachers their due (of course, using our taxes)?!? Again, I am speaking from the point of view of a Bulgarian (= citizen of a country where obviously nobody pays attention to the problems of the population). But the link below gives evidence that undervaluing these people is actually a global problem. http://worldhaveyoursay.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/do-we-undervalue-our-teachers/

My daughter is an advanced high school math teacher. She spent a fortune to get her math and teaching bachlors degree then got her masters degree in the aloted time which is required to continue teaching. She puts in 12 to 14 hours a day during the school year, has manditory meetings usually out of town, is in charge of one of the school clubs. spends her own money on school supplies to teach her students. (We quit paying for them.) Her best friend who graduated from college with her just got laid off from teaching, ( budget cuts)
It is a crying shame how we treat our teachers. they deserve so much more than we give them. It is no wonder they are changing career fields in droves.

The teachers in Montana and California are concerned that they will be losing jobs next year. This equals a return to times when education becomes the last need to be addressed. For the future, we need to value our teachers and avoid over crowding classes to the point that many students suffer and our future suffers due to a loss of potential of these students who need good teachers.

it isn't just a question of pay but teachers are at risk of being attacked by their students these days. Stories about teachers being raped, stabbed, killed at school or just outside school are becoming more and more frequent.
People need to realise how privileged they are to be able to send their children to school, a great many Western children don't appreciate this.
