Alemany Blvd./San Juan Ave Safety

Target:
Jack Fleck, San Francisco City Traffic Engineer of SFMTA
Sponsored by:
On Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 7:51 p.m., Stacey Krause, a 20 year old woman, was hit by a speeding car along the crosswalk on the Alemany Boulevard/San Juan Avenue intersection in San Francisco, CA. Later that night, Stacey passed away due to injuries from the accident.

Since Stacey's accident, there has been several vehicle collisions on this intersection. The lack of street safety precautions such as a stop sign or pedestrian lights on the Alemany/San Juan intersection makes crossing the street in our neighborhood an unnecessary danger for local families and their children. If the situation is left as it is, I fear other unnecessary incidents may occur.

Therefore, I sign this petition in support of increased safety measures, such as a stop light, on the Alemany/San Juan intersection.

I don't even know this girl but that doesn't mean I don't feel pain for what happened to her and her family. Things like what happened to her are beyond words. To say the least it isn't fair. No one deserves to die just like that for no reason at all...This country doesn't do enough to protect its citizens even with simple things like stop lights on the roads...pathetic. So sorry for her and others who were taken so abruptly...its extremely sad=*(

As an after school teacher and a tax payer, I feel if you can save a life by spending a few tax dollars on a stop sign. It would be worth more than the ink and paper used the sign the order to get a stop sign. Even ten times more than the metal used to make the sign. My friend died on than intersection and I know she's not the first one to die on that intersection, but she should be tha last.

Another needless tragedy. We must ask Jack Fleck, what will it take to correct this safety issue? A death of another neighbor, a family member, or perhaps someone close to him?

For 10 years, I've lived two houses away from the Alemany Blvd./San Juan Ave. intersection. Alemany is a four lane road at this intersection. I've witnessed many pedestrians in the crosswalks almost get hit by vehicles that cross Alemany, perhaps a few times a month. For vehicles going in one direction on Alemany, this usually happens when vehicles in one Alemany lane stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but vehicles in another Alemany lane whiz by at 35-40 mph. A blind curve in the road on Alemany from Ocean Ave. to San Juan Ave. contributes to the problem of vehicle drivers traveling north on Alemany not being able to see pedestrians or vehicles in the intersection until the last second. Thus, these vehicles sometimes can't slow down in time to stop for pedestrians or vehicles that might be in the intersection. The vehicle that tragically struck poor Stacey Krause came around this blind curve while she was walking in the crosswalk. Further, vehicles traveling on San Juan that cross Alemany from the west (two way) to the east (one way) are often involved in collisions with other vehicles in the intersection. The intersection is very busy for vehicles because Alemany is a major thoroughfare, and because one block up San Juan on the east side of Alemany are banks, Walgreens, shops, etc. on Mission St. Vehicles traveling from the west on San Juan are often in collisions with vehicles going south on Alemany, as San Juan from the west is on a fairly steep hill, so visibility onto Alemany is not good, as the driver on San Juan heads straight across Alemany or turns right onto Alemany. Also, vehicles traveling on San Juan across Alemany to the east side are often hit by vehicles traveling north on Alemany around the blind curve mentioned above. I've heard or seen the aftermath of dozens of vehicle collisions in this intersection over the last 10 years. Please make the Alemany Blvd./San Juan Ave. intersection safe for everyone. RIP Stacey.
