This wonderful technology is missing just one little thing... Subtitles.

Subtitles on all Aircraft Carriers.

Target:
Airline Companies
Sponsored by:

Several people within the Deaf Community have brought up the issue that airlines do not put subtitles on TV shows and movies. Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing people make up a great number of the Airline's customers. We travel a lot so we should be given the same consideration by the airlines as hearing customers. Is it fair, ethical that we have to sit through our long flights, unable to understand whatever is on while hearing customers are able to enjoy the services to the fullest.  We have waited a long time for this change to happen and now it is time to become proactive. Sure the ADA law has taken care of us in some situations, but shouldnt ADA Title III: Public Accommodations apply to this situation also (http://www.ada.gov/cguide.htm)? Why not be heard, Im sure I speak on the behalf of the Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing community when I say that we would love to have subtitles on all Aircraft Carriers. I welcome not just the United States but the world, people who fly need subtitles, come and sign this petition.

My 12 year old son who is hearing impaired to profound with hearing aids had to fly home from Florida alone. I know that he did not benefit from the closed captioning on the plane in flight movie or directions because he was very nervous because his hearing aids did not work very well in the air (the feeling of your ears popping hinders the overall use of hearing aids). I am sure that being able to watch a movie with the subtitles like he does at home would have been a great help. It is bad enough that movie theaters only use the captioning hand held boards at select movies that are not always new releases. You have a choice to go to that movie (which he usually decides not to) taking a plane to a destination is another story. When there are foriegn speaking passengers are there not accomodations for them, why not the deaf/hearing impaired.

I also had same problems, 6 times now on DIFFERENT AIRLINES...we are human beings, we cant lip read small screens. Do something about it, it isn't hard, put dvd with subtitles...we pay like the person on same flight.

How would you like to watch movies on an 11 hour flight, with all the sound turned off? :-(

I understand if the airlines will lose money on headphones if the captions were on the screen. Okay, let's break it even withn the hearings, why not leave the main screen uncaptioned, but the backseat monitor/screen be equipped with captioning/subtitle enability? Fair enough for the hearing and the deaf?

The Deaf have been ignored for a long time. It is time the Airlines offered subtitles on movies and T.V. shows.

It is not fair that Deaf passengers are not able to enjoy films with subtitles - it's a torture already sitting for hours and hours! One other option is to have airlines provide DVD players with same movies they're showing at same fee hearing people pay for earphones. Seems like a fair compromise.

Quit ignoring the needs of the Deaf and HoH! We deserve the same rights as the hearing. Not only is this wrong to not accomodate for entertainment reasons but it is wrong for safety reasons as well. Should the plane be in trouble the Deaf/HoH may never know what to do because when instructions were spoken they couldn't hear them. CC NOW!

I cant believe they're not already required. Deaf and Hard-of-hearing people arn't the only people who use them. My hearing is fine and I have them turned on most of the time on my TV. < Very handy for eating and watching at the same time.. :) >

It has been far too long that this has NOT happened. Closed caption should be a given. The movies are shown for all passengers enjoyment so why cut out a huge group of people. Make this happen.

My daughter became deaf at 18 due to neurofibromatosis type 2. She has to fly back and forth between Georgia and New York for college, and to and from Los Angeles for medical checkups. None of the online movies have captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing. There is no good reason for excluding captioning on in-flight entertainment. It appears that the airlines are more concerned about guarding against the possibility of neighboring passengers "eavesdropping" on deaf passengers' captions than they are with accommodating the disabilities of the deaf. What is the excuse?
